What a great little but mighty plant nursery in S.E. Portland Oregon. I used to live in this neighborhood and it has many hidden gems. Birds and Bees Nursery is one of them. I'm a member of Carnivorous Plants Society of Oregon and one of my things is finding places that sell Carnivorous Plants outside of the big box stores. Sure the big Home store has plenty of Venus Flytraps every year but it's a cruel thing to see a plant abused by employees who don't know how to care for such a plant. First of all this plant has 2. basic needs. 1. All the direct sunlight it can get. At least 12 hours a day. 2. Distilled Water or Rain water. To see this plant living inside the store on a shelf dries out is a difficult thing to see. If it is watered, Tap Water us what it's given. Tap water is a for sure slow death to a Venus Flytrap Plant. So in my search, I found a little nursery in the burbs. Next to a Taco Smell restaurant, full of all sorts of plants from vines to carnivorous plants. In my interest, they had Sundews, Picture Plants and a ton of Venus Flytraps all sitting in the full sun. I found what I thought was a good specimen and when I picked up and looked at the Venus Flytrap I wanted, I realized it was actually 3 small and one slightly larger Venus Flytrap plants in the same pot for (I'm pretty sure in right. I was so excited to find such an awesome plant that I kinda forgot and the receipt wasn't helpful.) $15.00. They're usually about $10.00 for a common Venus Flytrap plant. I basically bought 4 plants for $3.75 a piece. With such great prices, my wife found a couple plants she couldn't leave without. We both left Birds and Bees happy. Update on our plants. I will never patronize a business that knowingly causes harm to wildlife. We went to buy a bird bath. When my 18 yo daughter noticed the business sells red dyed "nectar" for hummingbirds, she kindly shared that red dye makes hummingbirds sick and is dangerous for them. The woman was very defensive and replied "I know red dye is not good for hummingbirds but people ask for it so I provide it". The Cornell Lab of Ornithology strongly recommends against using red dye in feeders. There is no research that proves red dye is safe for hummingbirds, and very compelling anecdotal information from experienced, licensed rehabbers that hummers who have been fed dyed food have higher mortality, higher incidence of tumors of the skin, bill and liver, impaired hatching in hummingbird eggs, and decreased reproduction rates Everybody loves hummingbirds, so the last thing we want to do is to harm them. Do not use red-dye solution or add red food coloring to your hummingbird feeders. Only use plain white granulated sugar mixed with boiled water (cooled before serving): 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. NO substitutes. Keep it fresh in the heat and liquid in the winter bc hummers will be relying on this nectar . read more

I'm in LOVE with this little nursery! And even though it's pretty small, they have a wide variety of plants (from tiny succulents to Christmas trees, and so much in between.) The staff is warm and friendly (and helpful), and they're even dog friendly! (Good to know next time I want to bring my pup in.) It's also an amazing spot for gifts, whether it's for the holidays, a birthday or housewarming present, etc., they have so many wonderful things to choose from. Gift ideas like locally made planters, plant hangers, local art, all the fixin's to create your own super cute terrarium, and of course, plants! They also hard cards, buttons, magnets, books... I love this sweet little nursery in SEPDX. They are Black and woman run and owned and have rearranged their whole shop so it's safe for people. They have lovely plants-indoor and outdoor, plant pots, bird feeders, soil. Anything you might want for your garden. This little secret SE Powell/Tabor Neighborhood Nursery shouldn't be kept a secret. They have a fantastic selection of native oregon plants, both indoors & outdoors. Super cute pots, hangers, gardening essentials, and hey get your self a dozen farm eggs while your at it! Both the owners are welcoming & informative. Very nice little nursery that sells your needs for urban farming. Bails of straw for your live stock? check. Those upside down watering things for your chickens? got that to, Watering can that is shaped like a garden gnome? yep. They have a nice selection of house plants and other decorating odds and ends inside. The women working was friendly and a small child came in very exited wanting to see the cat that lives there. Outside there are more plants both in front of the store and in the back yard. Out back there were chickens according to said child before she went out back to talk at them. There isn't a big selection of anything due to the space available. What they did have looked very healthy and reasonably priced. read more

I created a minimalist terrarium for a good friend of mine. I asked for a little advice, in terms of which succulents were simplistic in terms of care. One person that helped me, was very helpful, and boxed up my creation. Another person that was there seemed kind of annoyed that I was asking all these questions, which I found irritating. I will come back once my kitten is a little older, so my terrarium doesn't end up on the floor shattered to pieces. I made one years back, and it started to mold, I'll have to come back and re-create another for myself. I'll definitely be back! read more

I love this nursery! I didn't know about them prior to covid 19. They have been doing contactless delivery and I have been ordering almost weekly from them. All their veggie starts and herbs have been really healthy and strong. They're all thriving now (even though I don't have the best track record)! Even though they are super busy, whenever I speak to Amanda on the phone she is very cheerful and patient with my questions. I plan on visiting them often after the restrictions are lifted. This is my favorite neighborhood garden shop in town! They have the sweetest little kitty cat who roams around the shop and greets all the customers. You absolutely must pet him if you come in. All of the staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and their recommendations have been spot-on for me and my house plant needs. He even helped me fix up a plant that wasn't doing very well. I've been meaning to write an update to my review here for some time ever since I realized the information I provided was blatantly wrong. Whoops. Sorry guys. CORRECTION: In addition to having lots of great plants, these guys DO sell both birds AND bees. Also everything you need to raise said birds and bees. If you absolutely need to have the Birds & the Bees talk, these are probably the people to have that talk with. I count myself incredibly lucky to live around the corner from this gem of a nursery. In past years, I've grown accustomed to buying seeds, soil, and pots at places like Home Depot because quality local nurseries seem to be an endangered breed. It's so great to now be able to buy these things from people who actually specialize in them. This is not a large business. The store itself is really just a single room and their outdoor nursery is modest. But they really pack a punch with the space they are working with, providing ample selection at reasonable prices. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. If you have any sort of doubts or questions, don't hesitate to ask. I've always left this store knowing more than I did when I walked in. When it's all said and done, I'm a big fan. read more

We have been on the hunt for Barberry bushes and recently visited Portland Nursery. We were overwhelmed by how large it is and when asking an employee for assistance were disappointed by the lack of help and knowledge. Fortunately, Birds and Bees exists! The first time I went in, I was a little taken aback by the lack of selection but talked to one of the owners, Amanda. She promised that they could order anything we wanted. She and her partner have been so helpful in our decision making: how many bushes, the size that we need etc...Anyway, we finally purchased the bushes and they were $15 less than what Portland Nursery charges AND they are bigger! I could not be more pleased. We will be back and will tell all of our friends to shop here. read more

Such a great place. I was working on some simple centerpieces for my wedding and stopped in. The gal (dang it, I didn't catch her name) was so helpful. I brought some ramekins in that I had and picked out some small cacti and succulents and she replanted them in the ramekins for me and put some small rock on top. They turned out perfect! This is a cute little store on Gladstone Street right around 38th. They sell boutique-y and practical Gardening items, ideas, tools, and gear. But wait, there's more. They have gifts, cards, jewelry, home decor (mostly garden related) items. Be sure to stop in, even if you are not a Green Thumb. Owner/Clerk was nice and the front counter featured a large fully black cat on their scale. Bergy weighs 15.33 lbs. So cute. I got some pets in --- good therapy. I'm so happy to see Birds Bees Nursery as a part of the new neighborhood growth on Gladstone. This shop is quite charming and has a thoughtful selection of useful home and garden items along with a small selection of plants. I regularly buy food, straw and supplies for my chickens here, and will shop here the next time I need to buy a gift. I first discovered this store when a close friend of mine brought me a house present from here. This appears to be a very small business, and looks like it probably needs a little neighborhood support to make it through the first couple of seasons. I hope they make it so I don't have to go back to leaving my neighborhood to care for my chickens! read more

This place is small but they have a lot going for them. They have a lot to select from, I ended up getting some variety of aloe for my hanging pots at home, was about 20$ which is probably double the price I would normally pay for a plant like that? But in comparison to all the nurseries I've been to in Portland, it's about average price wise.
