I decided to drive up to the Alberta neighborhood to check out this nursery today. Some of the other recent Yelp reviews mentioned that the store was surprisingly closed during business hours, so I was a little hesitant. To avoid disappointment, I called their phone number and reached a voicemail stating their hours are 11-6 each day. I saw they had posted on Instagram the day before, so everything seemed promising. So after driving the 20 minutes up to Alberta at 1:00 on a Sunday afternoon and finding a parking spot, I was very disappointed to meet the same fate as the previous reviewers and encounter a padlocked gate in the middle of posted business hours during a busy weekend. I'm sure this place is great, but I will only try and stop by in the future if I'm in the neighborhood rather than making a special trip. read more

Such a cute nursery. It isn't your conventional nursery. It reminds me more of a neighborhood garden. I've never seen such a beautiful garden space where all their plants were so beautiful and thriving. They had this little pot of strawberry plants hanging up on a beam with little strawberries popping out. They had beautiful smelling lilacs just bursting with color. I loved walking through this space. The people working here were really friendly and inviting. read more

This nursery IS THE BEST. I came into Thicket with just a small cat pot I had found at Anthropologie. They took that cat pot, found the absolute cutest little succulent for it, and then offered to pot it and add little green and blue beads for no extra charge!! And the succulent was so inexpensive it blew me away. I cannot sing their praises highly enough, I am so in love with my little new succulent friend and how nice and wonderful she was at Thicket. Beyond that, I love their outdoor location and amazing selection of plants and succulents (both indoor and outdoor). They also have classes! read more

I loved shopping here, and highly recommend the place - and its people and plants - to all. Hobby gardeners LOVE specimen nurseries like Thicket in Portland. It has rich variety, healthy plants, bees and other pollinators in residence, and possibly one of the kindest, most knowledgeable master gardeners in Oregon. We stopped by specifically because of their reputation, and shopped because of the variety and accessibility of so many wonderful selections. The master gardener on duty spent her time helping both enthusiasts and newbies select plants, with information about their needs and habits that will make for a good fit when we place them in our outdoor or indoor spaces. Gardening and chatting, learning and exchanging information. And a truck packed with interesting specimens to try in our garden. Richly satisfying. And yes, the beautiful tulip magnolia that she helped us load and secure in our truck, made it home to Brookings without stress. read more

Hands down, the best nursery in town. They have all the unique plants you can dream of, at very fair prices: succulents, tropical plants, vegetable starters, herbs, trees, pots, you name. They also have a couple of greenhouses with cactus! On top of all of this, they are located in the most charming little area - a nook behind another building next to a juice spot and pine state biscuits. Not sure what to do with your mom or friend is visiting from out of town? Take them on a walk through this beautiful nursery to show off how cool Portland is. Friendly little plant haven. Since it's tucked off the main strip, it's easy to miss if you're walking fast. I stopped in here with only the intention to look but ended up with exactly what I needed. There I was again and out I walked with three new fabulous plants. Love the layout of this place, the artsy-ness of it all. An oasis right there along Alberta. (if you are waiting in line at Pine State have your friends keep your place and come wander the plants just behind their building at this fab nursery. I went with moderate for price due to the eclectic selection of unusual plants. They do have a few goodies that could be considered inexpensive BUT this is a place of intrigue. On every table you'll no doubt find something new/fantastic- this is not your box store inexpensive everything nursery. I live on the west side and drive to this business to find unusual plants. Loved this nursery! They had such a diverse amount of plants and adorable pots. Anything from fruits-ferns- succulents. Ashley helped us out while there and was extremely knowledgeable about each plant, the care, and the best placement for them. You could tell she loves what she's doing and had such a kind temperament. She made the entire experience enjoyable. She spoke very highly of the owner and other workers. The gardener in me was absolutely dying. This place is beyond adorable and full of the most beautiful plants, flowers,succulents trees and vegetables. This little business is someday dream of mine. Broke my heart not to buy anything, since I had no way to get it back home to LA, but there are so many different varietals of veggies I had never heard of, I was in complete and utter awe. What a fun little nursery! Very well priced items and they offer a unique selection of items. I was astounded at how wonderfully affordable their containers were! Most places charge an arm and a leg but they had gorgeous ones super low priced! Whether you're a novice plant person like me or a pro like some of my friends, this is THE place to go for indoor plants, outdoor plants, holiday greenery, a friendly dog to pet, and the best customer service on Alberta Street. I don't know much about this green stuff, but I like to experiment with my new yard. I live nearby and sometimes I'll just walk down to ask questions. Adria, Ashley and the rest of the staff are incredibly knowledgeable about every last item in their inventory, and if you ask them a question they don't know the answer to (not likely) they will work to find the answer. Other nurseries are bigger, some are are fancier, but this is the real deal... no BS, no pesticides, all natural and beautiful products. Great location, too... with the French and Italian food carts across the street, the juice bus, Pine State Biscuits, Great Notion Brewpub -- all right next door. Long live Thicket!! read more

I love this place. They always have at least one thing I can't leave without. The owner is always super helpful and knowledgeable about the plants and will freely give any information she can about each one. Also, the layout and design of the space is beautiful! Especially as more items come in during the spring and summer. There are a couple of chairs by a water feature that are perfect to relax on while perusing the many botanicals. They also have great classes ranging from companion gardening to building your own Christmas wreath and garland. read more

Just the loveliest staff ever! My boyfriend and I popped by after brunch to find a new houseplant, and the owner was so very sweet! She even helped me transfer my little ghost fern into a different plastic holder for me so it'd fit in the pot I wanted. The entire layout and staff who run this urban shop give off such a comforting and relaxed vibe, I could spend hours strolling around and admiring the beautiful decor and selection of plants. What a wonderful find! While I was getting a haircut at "The Modern Man (5 stars)," my wife saw the line across the street at "Pine State Biscuit (5 stars)." While we munched we watched a few people going around the side and returning with some perfectly-sized urban plants, so we wandered in. The place is wonderful for the small-setting apartment dwellers we've become. One of the things I missed most about downsizing was my garden, but Thicket has just the right accoutrements to bring the green back into our lives. And I don't have to weed anymore! We have started with a small succulent selection for my office while we survey the home geography for botanical opportunities. We will be back. Thicket is a treat, and highly recommended. read more

This place is magical! It's probably as close to middle earth as you'll get in Portland. Each of the plants are blessed with elven dust, and they've all been sung to at least a few dozen times by Tom Bombadil, which gives them even more character than you initially imagined. The staff are exceedingly friendly and knowledgable and all you feel here are good plant vibes. AHH! My heart is warmed just thinking about this place as I stare at my beautiful new plants in awe. Oh how I love Thicket!!! The ladies here have great service and selection down pat and a nice vibe where you can get assistance right at the middle of the spectrum (neither ignored nor stalked), plus you can tell they love what they do. After moving away from Portland it has been hard in our new town to find the kind of nurseries that have this kind of happy warm vibe matched with a ton of really cool products and great product knowledge, so it was one of the first places I stopped when coming back for a visit. Best nursery experience I've had in Portland. I'm a succulent slut, and not only do they have a fantastic variety, their prices are also better than their competetors (2" pots are $2 here and $3 everywhere else). They also have great containers for reasonable prices. Their plants are healthy and they have a lot to choose from considering their smallish size. If you're looking for trees and large shrubs, this place may not be your best option, but if you want mostly anything else, and would enjoy geeking out about plants with the oh-so-sweet and incredibly adorable owner, then by all means, pay Thicket a visit.
