Originally built as the Hotel Alfa Luxembourg in 1932, Alfa (named after its founder) closed in 2017, was extensively renovated, reopening as the first Marriott branded hotel in Luxembourg in the summer of 2025, with 153 rooms and suites (7 floors). It is located right across from the main train station, which is what my nephew and I took from Paris. We stayed for one night and found the stay to be one of the better experiences I've had in a foreign country hotel, especially for the price.
I booked a single room for 176€ weekend rate directly on the Marriott site. I later learned that all the rooms are singles (no double beds), except for the bigger family rooms which are not eligible for an upgrade. I have Elite status with Marriot, so was upgraded to a King room. The room was a decent size room and had all the accessories expected from a mid-range hotel chain: self-service keurig like coffee maker, robes, higher end soaps, good shower pressure, modern A/C with working thermostat. One really nice feature was auto sensing night lights that worked really well...as soon as you left the bed, soft floor lights turned on, illuminating your path but not being bright enough to wake everyone else up.
All the benefits of Elite status applied here: late check out, M lounge access and free breakfast at the restaurant (which we completely missed because we overslept). No free bottled water however.
We did get access to the M Lounge, and was able to attend the daily happy hour. It's not the biggest lounge and was very crowded. They had the typical bread and cold meats, along with different wines and bottled beers and soda. Towards the end of our stay, the lounge attendant started to deliver mason jars with single portions of a salmon or beef dish. It was delicious and allowed us not to have to go a restaurant for dinner.
There are definite advantages to staying at a hotel that is about 5 months since its grand reopening: prices seemed to be discounted to account for low season and the associates were very eager to engage and delight guests: from check-in (who was very pleasant and did her best to check us into a room, even though we were early), to the lounge attendants (who specifically provided my hungry nephew extra portions of a meat and potato dish that he liked), to the concierge (who gave a handwritten, personalized notes to every Elite guest and who I would have gladly asked for help), to housekeeping (who brought an extra set of linens so we could comfortably separate ourselves while sleeping). Definitely would recommend this hotel to travelers visiting Luxembourg City, especially if a Marriott loyalist. read more
