McHugh's serves up elevated pub food in a warm and welcoming environment. We were able to be seated straight away. To begin our experience here, my dining companion and I both ordered Guinness. For my main, I got the salmon. It was cooked to perfection and places atop a bed of creamy mashed potatoes with a drizzle of a buttery sauce and a spear of asparagus. It also had a couple of tasty croquettas (I believe that's what they were!) on the side. Everything about the dish was outstanding. For dessert we got and shared the sticky toffee pudding (where have you been all my life?!?), which was rich, sweet, buttery goodness with both cream and ice cream on the side. The service was friendly throughout. Get to it!

First things first, no food here, just drinks. Second, live trad music at 6pm & 10pm when I went in early October. Seating is tight so get there early & grab a few beers and find yourself a spot. This was a fun pub and the beers and music were just what I wanted. I plan to come back the next time I'm in Galway.

Minus points for trying to put ice in my Jameson's. There was a live two piece band on which made it a bit livelier but the front of the bar is quite small and we were edged into a corner. The restaurant in the hotel looked very boring so we decided to check out Porterhouse. When we arrived there it was FULL with locals. As we had a toddler , so they seated us in a private dining area outside the bar to comply with the regulation that kids aren't allowed in bars after 9 pm. Our server was very friendly. The staff was really good! He took our orders, got us to try a few beers and whiskeys before we finalized our orders to ensure that we really enjoy what we order. At this point we were just blown away by the hospitality despite being extremely crowded. We ordered two pints of beer, a shot of whiskey, fish and chips and a vegetarian curry dish. Everything tasted fantastic. The place itself was huge and the ambiance was of the traditional Irish pub. Brick walls, good music, fantastic pours, great food and warm smiles all around.

I ordered a couple of drinks at the bar and only after 2 other people had ordered and received their drinks did I get mine. Gotta look after the regulars I expect. Beer was cold though so I guess that's a plus. Decent atmosphere and if you have lived here for 40+ years this would be a pretty decent place to hang out in.

No problem, we ordered Fish Stew, Roast of the Day (brisket) and Fish and Chips. All local ingredients and all made at the restaurant. Check out my pics of the food and yes it was delicious. True pub food and good to the last bite. In fact our waitress shared about the local match and to make sure if we wanted dessert- homemade apple pie with cream, ice cream and custard. Yep we shared it as we were stuffed but I'm not sure all parties were happy to share. Thanks to the staff and Trappers for making us welcome and putting in the game for us. We stayed here two nights last week. The castle has 400+ years of character and charm. I was very…read moresick and slept in the room all night and most of one day... it was the best sleep i had while in Ireland. Laura was a dear and checked with my girlfriend to see if i was ok. She was a warm and splendid host. Their "Irish" breakfast hit the spot both mornings. I proposed to my now fiance' upstairs by the fireplace. The rooms are "cozy", but its a castle and I didn't expect large rooms like the movies. A lot of thought went into the castle decor... i can truly appreciate the charm and effort that went into the decoration. We walked around the castle before they had a big pig-roast event. Its a great place for events and lots of parking on site. It was relatively quiet even with so many guests. Location was good, easy to get in and out of town and an easy taxi ride to Galway. You can't walk to downtown but who would wants to stay in a castle in a downtown area!? I would like to have seen two small things; 1. A rope across the base of the stairs stating "Hotel Guests Only" to keep the event goers from going upstairs to the separate "hotel" space. 2. Instant hot water in the showers up stairs. In the morning they're great but I tried to take a shower in the eve and it was chilly. I'd go back in a heartbeat, I appreciate the people who work there and the effort that was put into our stay.

The restaurant is clean and beautiful, but the ancient parts of the castle are well preserved. The staff was fantastic as soon as we arrived. The service was prompt and professional. The food was outstanding. Many in our party declared it was the best meal of their lives. We had soup, roast duck, beef fillet... Everything was cooked to perfection. I would make this experience a priority each time we visit Galway from now on. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
