Great Lakes National Cemetery - Committal Shelter #1

    Great Lakes National Cemetery

One word may describe a person who lost their mate, or a child without a parent, yet no one word…read moredescribes a parent who lost their child. Any loss is hard, but you will get by and you will move on. I will always thank the VA and all its associates for providing a place surrounded by such natural beauty as the Great Lakes National Cemetery to honor veterans. Its not just a place to mourn by yourself, but also a place to visit together often and rejoice for the lives you shared with others. The facility provides many services and is always eager to help (just ask). I have several family and friends at one of these veteran cemeterys. For us our son rests at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, and when its our time we have already made arrangements to join him. Veterans and their family need to prepare now for this type of event, as nothing can ever stop time. For me its been too quick of fifty years since I left friends behind. When I visit this honored site time somehow stands still for me. I guarantee that some of your own fogotten memories may come flooding back too. Each time I visit I can almost see and hear our son again, and remember a few practical jokes by my brothers in arms. It is like a secluded special park. It is a quiet somber place where you just might see other visitors bring a chair, read, talk, sing, or simply embrace their love for this country. When we visit we take a walk along the large well kept lake. This is my favorite place. I close my eyes and easily recall those memories stored forever ..... stored forever in my mind by a naive and far younger man. God Bless

On this occasion we said goodbye to my cousin's dear father, who served in the Army. This place memorializes military Veteran's self-less service with dignity, honor and the respect that they deserve. Here in Holly, Michigan is just one of the 155 national Veteran Affairs (VA) gravesites available. Burial in a VA national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces and Veterans who have met active duty service requirements and have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Their spouses, minor children and, under certain conditions, dependent unmarried adult children are also eligible for burial even if they pre-decease the Veteran. As part of our family estate planning, this will be the resting place for my beloved parents when the time comes, which I hope is a long time from now. The bonus for our Veterans, Service Members or Family Members is that they may receive this benefit at absolutely no cost. Yes, NO COST! It is includes the gravesite, a white headstone or grave marker, a burial flag, Presidential Memorial Certificates, opening and closing of the grave, a grave liner and perpetual (ongoing) care of the gravesite. The grounds are beautifully manicured. The rows of aligned white headstones are pristinely maintained and marked. This is truly a sight to behold knowing who these headstones represent. Once you enter the main entrance to the GLNC from Belford Road you drive down the avenue of flags which is literally a pathway of American flags. The administration building is to your left. This area is organized with designated lanes for multiple services to take place on a moving schedule. Your car processional to your committal shelter for the final military honors is timely and proper. The committal shelters are complete with seating for the family with additional standing room. For subsequent GLNC visits, there is a Gravesite Locator kiosk in the lobby of the administration building along with maps to find your loved ones place of burial by typing in their last name. I interacted with half a dozen staff members on this day and they were all very professional and polite, even one extending his condolences. Tip of the day: Please allow extra travel time for construction and highway backups to arrive on time. Google Car Play will give you the heads up for unexpected lane closures and alternate routes. To the buried service members: Thank you for your service!
