We were guided onto and off the ferry with clear instructions. The longest wait time was about 10 minutes in line. The trip across the Channel is about 5 minutes. It's a good chance for a glimpse of maritime cargo traffic. read more

Forgo the traffic and construction and take the scenic route to Lynchburg. You will be greeted with a nice breeze, scenic views and a zippy 5-10 minute crossing. Arriving at the Lynchburg Ferry via Deer Park and passing the San Jacinto Battle Monument, you come upon a windy road, but do not get speed happy (especially at night) lest you find yourself in the drink. Only one ferry is operating at the moment which can only ferry 10 cars, or in my case 9 cars and a motorcycle) at a time so plan accordingly. If you do find yourself not making the queue head over to Monument Inn restaurant for some fresh daily seafood or watch the sunset across the road at Joan Seguin Historic Park. Before I forget.....If you do find yourself in the area close to sunset..BRING MOSQUITO REPELLENT!!!!! read more

After leaving the San Jacinto Monument and Battleship Texas, I had a choice: go back on the same path I came in on or head further north to the Lynchburg Ferry. I reviewed my old-school GPS (a 1995 paper Key Map) and saw that I could meet up with the interstate and take that back into town. On morning drive-time traffic, I hear often of either the Washburn tunnel (being blocked) or the Lynchburg Ferry (down to one boat or not operating) but those problems were on another planet for all I cared since they were on the far eastern side of our metropolitan area. The landing was about 5 minutes from the park and there is exactly one restaurant (the well-regarded Monument Inn) next to it - at 2 PM Saturday, it was doing a brisk business by the volume of cars in the lot. I had to wait about 10 minutes for the ferry to load, its replacement to arrive, and disgorge its cars. I lucked out and was the first in line for the next ferry - the ferry is a very egalitarian place: first on is first off. And, to balance the load, they load and unload in alternating sides. Compared to the Bolivar ferry which handles a larger volume of cars, has more ferries, and shuttles a greater distance between the Bolivar peninsula and Galveston Island, this operation is small potatoes. Each ferry can handle no more than 12 cars and the ride takes about 5 minutes to traverse the Houston Ship Channel. On the northern landing, the road is barely above sea level so it would not be good to be in the area during a heavy thunderstorm and definitely not with a tropical storm in the region. As we made the short pleasant trip, I wondered why they didn't just build a bridge to dispense with the ferry service. It would seem that the bridge would have to consume more land on both sides of the passage in order to minimize the angle of approach while gaining the required vertical height for large shipping barges to pass. In the end, I'm guessing that the costs of building such a long bridge outweighed the operating costs of the ferry. This was a free and fun diversion to see a different part of town. Great if you want to experience a car ferry but don't want to go all the way down to Bolivar or Galveston. FREE ferry ride. It is very short, maybe 4-5 minutes if that. The ferry is very small compared to the one in Galveston. It might hold 10 cars. The water was very choppy the day I took the ferry. The line wasn't too long, but one of the ferries was not working due to repairs, so it was just one ferry that day. WARNING: If you are close to the front of the line you will probably be at the front of the boat, and you might get water splashed on the hood of your car. read more

The fastest way for us to get to The Monument Inn for lunch required me to put my fear of boats and water I can't see the bottom of to rest for 10 minutes or so, each direction. Somehow setting my parking brake, a requirement, made me feel safer. Only one of the ferries was running, so we waited about 30 minutes for the ride over. We lucked out on the way back because the ferry was arriving when we were. The ferry can ride 10-12 automobiles depending on the size. The ferry, in operation since 1822, is historical in the role that it played in the Battle of San Jacinto when it was simply Lynch's Ferry. During this battle about 5,000 Texans escaped the oncoming army of Santa Anna by utilizing this ferry. It has been modified throughout the years to keep up with the times. Again, the ride is short and the "parking" is not spacious as it isn't a joyride so much as a convenience and way to get from land to land so it's best to stay in your car. This small, historic ferry has been here since before the Texas revolution. In fact, it played an important role in the Battle of SanJacinto. It has gone from a hand drawn wooden horse ferry across a sleepy bayou to a 12 car diesel craft traversing one of the area's busiest water ways. Tiny. Slow. Short ride. FREE. First on is first off. You stay in your car, unlike the big car ferries in Canada, or many other places where the trip is longer than 3 minutes. Never experienced a car ferry? Good practice run if you are the phobic type and want to check the freak out factor, or if you have kids that would love the coolness of being in your own car, on a boat. Other than that, not a real biggie, not really scenic like some other car ferries we have used in other states. I have not been, but I have heard amazing things about the restaurant Monument Inn on the monument side of the crossing, so may be worth it to go, maybe not... it all depends on your perspective. read more

This teeny tiny little ferry is quite the experience. It can hold maybe 10-15 cars tops. You won't have long to wait, though, because the ferry doesn't go far (maybe 10 minutes total?). The trip itself takes maybe 5 minutes. So depending on where you're going, it may or may not shorten your trip much. It's free of use, though, and it's one of the few ways you can "drive" your car and text at the same time. ;) I mostly use it to get from Baytown to Monument Inn since that restaurant sits about 50 feet away from the ferry. read more

This ferry ride may be short, but it's a true Texas experience and it's FREE. It's unfair to compare this to the Bolivar ferry or other ferries around the nation, because it's a very short ride across the ship channel. Did you know Harris County has been operating the Lynchburg Ferry continuously since 1888? It's origins can be traced back to 1822 and the ferry was even utilize by the Republic of Texas troops during the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 (not the same boat, of course). Been on the ferry many times , used it to cross from pasadena to highlands for my last stop on the delivery run . was better than having to go back to 610 and 10 then back out to highlands . too bad they changed the weekend hours , usually arrive at 0630 in the morning . do not like driving 45 south through downtown houston . read more
