So right there, I knew this experience would be memorable and well worth it. Truly, this has been one of the best top experiences: my dad's friend was so knowledgeable about the whole tour. However, before we got to tour we had to put on special badges according to the guards to make sure other personnel know that we were going to look around. I learned a lot about NASA with all the shuttles, that they actually build some of the things in the facility, sometimes engineering students work in the lab and build robots, all the controls in the shuttles and how space life is. We even had the opportunity to tour and walk through a few of the shuttles which was super cool.

The NBL consists of a large indoor pool of water (40 feet deep, 202 feet long, and 102 feet wide. In other words, this is a big ass pool, of which I recently spent parts of 2 days learning boat- and helicopter-related survival training. And yes, I can honestly say that I trained with (or at least near) the astronauts! We also had the chance (via a special visor) to see 2 astronauts perform simulated task in preparation for upcoming missions. Deep down in the pool are full-sized mock-ups of the International Space Station (ISS) modules and payloads, and visiting vehicles from other National programs. The principle of neutral buoyancy is used to simulate the weightless environment of space. What we say was the astronauts (in 300# space suits) lowered and raised in and out of the pool using an overhead crane. Once in the water, the suited astronauts are weighted in the water by support divers so that they experience minimal buoyant force and minimal rotational moment about their center of mass. Multiple divers surround the astronauts during their entire training exercise. It was a very cool thing to watch and appreciate. Postscript - Who was Sonny Carter? M. L. "Sonny" Carter, was instrumental in developing many of the current space-walking techniques used by the astronauts. Carter was selected into the astronaut program in 1984 and flew into space STS-33 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. He was training as a crew member aboard STS-42 when on April 5, 1991, he died in a commuter plane crash near New Brunswick, Georgia. Before he became an astronaut, Carter was a Navy doctor and aviator, and a soccer player for the North American Soccer league.

The reason so many soldiers kill themselves. Rather than actually help the veterans, they rather…read moregive a bunch of run around answers. They mess up something and Instead of correcting it in a timely manner, they push you off to a charity for the homeless. The phone operators need better training considering they give out conflicting information constantly rather than be honest or helpful. Soldiers give up because we've realized what's the point? The va thinks that suspending someone's file (because their employee didn't make sure to update information) for weeks or months until they decide to click a button on a computer screen to fix their mistake is acceptable even though while our file is suspended, we are financially cut off. We receive compensation for the damage the military inflicted on our bodies and yet, they could care less because it isn't their checks that get cut off. We live with constant pain, emotional and or psychological issues and then we get thanked by being forced to wait months to get help, cut off financially and are unable to work fulfilling careers due to our injuries but the va does not care. In their mind, they say the words "thank you for your service" while in reality, they crap in our cereal with the run around while they stick their thumbs where the sun doesn't shine and collect a paycheck. Maybe they should wait months upon months to get their pay checks, then maybe, just maybe they may start to care to help veterans instead of just repeating a catch phrase people use to do nothing more than to make them feel better about themselves. So, with that I say, thank you va for screwing us over, thank you for screwing up my file, and thank you for taking away the possibility of me being able to hire a lawyer (by suspending my finances) so that I don't lose my daughter to her abusive mother that is trying to take my daughter out of country. If I didn't already regret serving my country, thank you for real-enforcing my beliefs that it was all for nothing. Well, except for years of my children's lived I've missed out on and the constant pain. I appreciate the big middle finger thrown my way from y'all.

This evening, I was in Charlotte and at 8:52 PM, the bright light that wasn't an airplane and wasn't a star appeared over the roof of one of my neighbors. Over the next four minutes, the dot silently swept across the sky and disappeared. Seven humans, 257 miles up in space, moving at 17153 miles per hour. Thanks, NASA. Keep on keeping on.
