Came with a group of 25 for a birthday. Booked in January for March. We got split in 2 groups since we were so large. But it was great! Our tour guides were so knowledgeable and shared their experiences and stories with us. It was everyone at the museum is so friendly and helpful.

What an amazing museum! Had I not joined my friend for breakfast I would have missed this museum. Being an aviation enthusiast, I love walking in and around historic aircraft and Lyon really brings the the history to life. Was in Irvine with my girlfriend and her son for a seminar near SNA and with time to kill I took her son to visit Lyon. We arriving on a Sunday and there was no one there. Was able to spend some time with the docents talking about the displays. Was impressive to walk around their static aircraft displays, with the ability to look inside the a C-47 or B-17. The planes are meticulously restored with a fabled history. The weekend we were there featured a showroom full of mini cars. We spent about two hours, end to end looking at displays, reading the material and learning about the history. It was a great experience and would highly recommend this museum if you happen to visit the area.

Came by here yesterday with the youngest kid for a birthday outing. Enjoyed the large planes inside on display and they also have an interactive area for little kids. Mine got to sit inside a cockpit and some army cars. Admission was $14 for adult and my kiddo was free due to age. Upstairs has some mini airplane displays. Also small theater for an educational show. I saw staff / docents hosting tours but we skipped that since a 3 year old can't really focus for that long!

A cool place to learn about Aviation during the WWI and WWII and Local tour guides very helpful.

    Arrival of P-51 Mustang.

Today the museum revealed their latest addition, a P-51 Mustang. It taxied along the apron and into the museum under its own power watched by docents and members.

The Lyon air museum is right behind the John Wayne airport. You can watch all the planes and jets arriving and departing on the landing strip from the museum which was pretty cool! we got so lucky to meet a U.S Air Force veteran who served during these times of history and happily shared his experience! (Thank you Fred) it's definitely a nice place for kids to learn and grow their passion for aircraft's! It's a Small museum but everybody is so welcoming and helpful there. They have nice souvenirs for purchase. If your around the area I'd recommend dropping in to learn some good ol U.S history.

The Lyon Air Museum was amazing! My dad and uncle are both vets so they got a really detailed and long tour of all of the different planes and histories contained inside the main viewing area. There were even four different planes and cars for visitors to sit inside of as photo ops. The biggest highlight for me, though, was getting to watch the SNA airport runway at the perfect spot where commercial, charter, and personal airplanes would literally lift up into the sky where I could take the perfect photos of each airline on their ascent. Lyon Air Museum is mostly about war planes, but for more commercial aviation enthusiasts like myself, it's still a neat place to catch United, American, Delta, Southwest, Alaska, and even Spirit airlines in action.

Really enjoyed all the history here. We went on the weekend over the Christmas holiday and experienced a little local gem for any history buff or aviator enthusiast.

Found this spot on Groupon and I'm so glad! I have three young boys and they all had a blast. We got to see some cool planes up close and my kids saw others landing and taking off as well. We will definitely be back. Definitely need to mention Patty at the front desk who had the best customer service and was so sweet. Ron was a worker walking around inside and he was so helpful and informative. So thankful both Patty and Ron were the ones to assist me because it made my experience here that much better!

Lyon Air Museum is an aircraft museum that exhibit a collection of authentic aircraft, rare vehicles, and war memorabilia of the 20th century. It is base at John Wayne Airport in OC. Founded by Maj Gen Will Lyon, this 30,000 sq ft museum houses a fleet of operational aircraft and vehicles-jeeps, cars & motorcycles. Admission ticket was $14 bucks. Museum was very organized and extremely clean. Most of the museum volunteers were former USAF officers and pilots. They bring a breadth of knowledge and experience about the aircraft and the WW2. You can spent 30 mins to see the entire museum but I spent 2 hrs just because I love aviation. Overall, I like LAM and I recommend you visit.

As soon as we entered, we were greeted kindly by the receptionist. She guided us through where to go and which parts of the museum are easily missed since she did not want us missing any of it. Everyone was so kind and knowledgeable. My kids had a blast in the area where they are allowed to sit and play in the cars! Perfect summer activity, inexpensive and educational while still being loads of fun.

We had the most amazing morning at Lyon Air Museum today. We were greeted by the friendliest front desk employee who chatted with us and made an effort to make us feel welcome. She buzzed us into the hangar where we met two gentlemen docents who were also veterans. One of the gentleman, Hal gave us the best impromptu tour of the entire hangar for about an hour. He had funny anecdotes and personal memories to share and he was an absolute gem. We loved getting to see the private planes outside the hangar as well (there's an open air viewing area that is chained off). There was a bonus motorcycle exhibit happening at the same time and we got to see Maverick's bike in Top Gun. Such an amazing experience and we can't wait to go back!

This was a bucket list adventure, for my son and I. We went to the World War II spectator event on January 25. The museum is full of World War II aircraft, cars, motorcycles, and memorabilia from the war. They have a fantastic display of real flight ready aircraft to see. They also have a great exhibition of model aircraft and all sorts of things from World War II. But at the event, my son and I attended we were able to see the planes up close on turmac. The pilots allowed everyone to get inside their planes. The I icing on the cake was to watch the planes takeoff. I can say for a fact, this was one of the greatest events my son and I have ever witnessed. Especially for him who is a future aviator in training I would like to thank all of the pilots and the staff at Lyon air museum, for their gracious acts of kindness. They made this 49-year-old feel like he was 11 years old. I and my son can't wait to go back to explore this museum once again. They have a spectacular event coming up on February 15 if you want to see some real live aircraft come out and enjoy The Lyon air museum.

Hi Do we need to buy ticket online Or we can just buy when we get there?…

You can do either. Also, you can usually find a good deal on Groupon.

Is it a good place to bring toddlers? I have a 3 year old and 1.5 yr old.

Yes, my 3 year old loved it! When went a month ago, loved all the planes that he can actually get into and push all the buttons.

    Do they have any helicopters?

No Helicopters. World War I and World War II planes, vehicles

Yet, at the same time, given the size and population of OC, it also makes perfect sense. Either way, I can't say I ever would've guessed it would be this nice, though! Just a shame that their exhibits didn't really blow us away... Located in the burgeoning arts and theater district of Costa Mesa, just down the road from South Coast Plaza, OCMA is such a gorgeous looking building. Sure, it helps that it's only a few years old, but the look of this place is no less impressive. Right out in front, there's a 65-foot art piece in the middle of the plaza that helps connect all of the neighboring buildings. Inside, there's a fairly large gallery space on the ground level with rotating exhibits, an upper level that appears to hold their more permanent collection of pieces, a coffee shop right next to the gift shop, and a rooftop restaurant with a large open area/garden. Sadly, though, as nice as the museum's design and amenities may be, though, much of the artwork was just okay. While the artwork upstairs was fine, the featured exhibits didn't really speak to us. Obviously, art is subjective, but one included pieces that appear to have just been drawn with a spirograph. The other consisted of several photographic series, whose commentary on social media I can appreciate, but felt exceedingly voyeuristic in nature - one following/semi-stalking a fellow after a chance encounter, another of strangers invited to sleep in the artist's bed so they could be photographed/documented, and a third showing the belongings of guests at the hotel she worked at. Artwork aside, the thing that I like most about OCMA is how admission is entirely free. So, in that sense, it's impossible to be too disappointed with the experience and/or what we saw. However, one thing to note is that you do have to pay if you park at any of the nearby garages, which are all unaffiliated with OCMA. For example, at the one on the other side of the Segerstrom Center, it cost us about $10 for two hours or so. Alternatively, South Coast Plaza is just a few blocks over and parking there is free, but I don't know how aggressive they are with towing and it feels like a big gamble just to save a few bucks. All in all, even though none of the exhibits were really our flavor, we still had a good time checking out OCMA. Oddly, there weren't many other visitors here when we arrived, but it did seem to get busier as the day wore on (there was a big group walking in as we were walking out) and we certainly didn't mind not having to deal with a bunch of crowds around. Plus, as nice as the museum looks, it's actually fairly small compared to others I've been to elsewhere. Since the featured exhibits have so much influence on the experience, I absolutely wouldn't mind coming back to see whatever they happen to have featured down the line. The ones they had when we were here may not have interested us, but the next ones might! Plus, it doesn't hurt that admission is free! All in all, THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down.

My family visited from out of town so we wanted to take them to some kid-friendly spots to entertain my 3-year-old niece. It's right next to the freeway, so finding it is easy but their parking lot is small. We arrived around 11 am, which is an hour after they open, and their lot was full. When that happens, you are redirected to the lot across the street and that's just a short walk. It can be inconvenient though if you are with multiple children. I was surprised at how big this place was. There is a downstairs and upstairs area, so we spent the entire day there. They had exhibits explaining some science and physics concepts in a fun way children can understand. What surprised me was the interactive grocery store that focused on teaching kids how to read nutrition labels and another area that explained recycling methods. I actually learned some things in that area about recycling hazardous household items. There is another area next to the gift shop downstairs where you can pet stingrays and small sharks. The upstairs area was my favorite! It's an ocean theme and had a bounce area for the kids. Outdoors is the Dino exhibit and their animatronics were such high-quality. There is a cut dig site where each child receives their own bucket to find fossils. They had a Scooby Doo pop up exhibit where you have to solve a mystery and there are clues throughout to help you. I got to make my own sandwich there, which was fun. I appreciated all the hand sanitizing and water filling stations to help keep our hands clean and our bodies hydrated. They do have a small cafe inside in case you get hungry. I had the tomato, pesto, mozzarella croissant sandwich, and it was actually quite good! It was toasted and had good flavor. I knocked it one star because we came across a few exhibits that didn't work or stopped working in the middle of us using it. Overall, it was such a fun experience with my family and my niece had a blast!
