I got diagnosed with convergence insufficiency, and Franzel, my vision therapist could not have been more helpful. Vision therapy here completely changed my life and I can read again. Only took about 12 sessions before my vision was good again. The optometrists here are also amazing, super friendly and helpful. The only complaint I had was that the admin staff here seem a little disorganized. I got overcharged about $200 for my sessions at first because there was some mixups with my insurance and their bookkeeping. I had to make a detailed spreadsheet with all my charges and insurance to send to them before they finally sent me a refund. Overall, it was pretty frustrating because it seemed like if I hadn't been so diligent about watching my credit card charges, they would have just kept that extra $200 and never refunded it to me. To top that off, I randomly got charged $80 two months AFTER my last session with them. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe their bookkeeping/computer system is just a little disorganized (as opposed to them trying to scam us), but I would recommend to people doing vision therapy here to triple check all your charges because there's a good chance Lyons is overcharging you. read more

This place is pretty great. And I mean...how many things do you generally look for in an eye care facility (no pun intended). The first time I went and got my eyes dilated, there were 2 puppies just roaming around like they owned the place. (Turns out, their owners DO own the place). They were so cute and soft and helped the time pass as I waited for my pupils to enlarge. The exams seem thorough, yet efficient. Everyone is really nice and amenable to answering questions. Haven't bought lenses from them yet, but when I need new ones, I'd definitely consider it. read more

My entire family goes to Lyons! That's actually only my husband and son so a whole two people ;) My husband likes them but I personally care more about my toddlers experience. He's 2.5 and has been going since he was 1, every 6 months. He has torticollis which can lead to vision issues. Not only are they friendly (and have a kid toy area in the waiting room) but they understand our situation and were so knowledgeable. I love this place! I have had eye issues since I was a baby, needing two eye surgeries and all that fun stuff. I have been in and out of eye doctor offices since as long as I can remember. Usually I would have to see an ophthalmologist but was able to come here because they have optometrists who specialize in what I have, strabismus. This was super exciting because I was having a hard time finding a new doctor in a new city! The inside and outside of the building look amazing, clean, and modern. It looks very professional and welcoming! During my first visit, as soon as I sat out in the waiting area for my eyes to dilate I'm pretty sure it was Elizabeth the optician who swooped in to help me pass the time by looking at glasses and trying to help me figure out which ones would look best. The appointment was wonderful, Dr. Fredrick is super great in the fact that right away I could tell she really knew what she was talking about and listened to each and every one of my concerns. It's nice knowing someone actual cares about how your vision affects you and your quality of life and strives to help fix it in any way possible. When the appointment was nearly finished she suggested vision therapy which I had never actually heard of and after doing some research of my own, I'm looking foreword to the opportunity to see what it does for me! Kalli and Elizabeth are two opticians that work there that really stand out to me as well, I hope they know I appreciate everything they do and have done for me since I started coming there. Kalli actually recognized me when I had come back in only for the second time to get my new glasses since she got the same style in a different color! I just had the best experience with my 6 year son at Lyons. We have been going to Northwestern since he was a baby and weren't able to get in for months so I decided to give them a try. They brought up doing eye therapy which was never discussed at Northwestern. The doctor and staff are amazing and it was very timely and we will be permanently switching to Lyons. read more

I did not go to any of the optometrists at Lyons, but I did bring my child's first eyeglasses prescription there. The optician was initially very nice but soon seemed impatient. I had a lot of questions for her, and she didn't seem particularly willing to entertain them. She eventually directed me to the Nano eyeglasses, which we ordered for my son. I was happy that Lyons promptly entered an order for the glasses. They arrived within a reasonable time as well. The fitting experience was fine. These are terrible glasses, however. Their main selling point is that they technically "convert" to goggles. However, the main glasses are composed of four pieces that often separate. It's like glasses being held together by k'nex or legos or something. They routinely come apart when you're washing them (which of course presumably happens at least once a day), and the goggles were so tight on my kid that they left indentations on his face. I originally didn't see any reviews for these glasses, so I felt future consumers would benefit from this information. I subsequently purchased 2 additional pairs of glasses from Costco. read more

I LOVE this place. The best eye doctor experience I have ever had. So many great things to say about every aspect of this family run business. Dr. Lyons is amazing - she exudes confidence but also friendliness and caring - she listened to all of my concerns, explained what she was looking for in the exam, step by step and explained the results thoroughly. She really me feel like I was getting the best care possible. The rest of the staff was also amazing (Thank you John & Jeff for your help!) - very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. They helped me pick out a great pair of frames and sunglasses and really spent the time to make sure I found exactly what I was looking for. I can't say enough about all of the staff - just great people - too bad you only need an eye exam once per year, I would love to frequent here just to hang out with them! The office is extremely clean, modern, and very high tech. I am a tech geek, so I was really impressed when the office forms were all presented on an iPad and many of the eye exams were all ran through a computer system. Other pluses: Their prices are competitive and reasonable. They stock a wide range of brand named frames. If you check out their website they can also order you just about any frame out there. Easily accessible by public transportation, and easy to find meter parking. Flexible hours. A kids play area if necessary. And finally, the best part of all - the pups in the waiting room. I LOVE dogs - and they were great. If you don't like dogs, not to worry, they blend in with the furniture. They are quiet, calm, not pesty, but very friendly if you do want to pet them. Eye doctor of the FUTURE!! I kept saying that over and over while we were there! Wow, this place is filled with some amazing technology and modern decor. However, the most impressive part was Dr. Stephanie Lyons. She's a rock star. Not only does she spend time on the South Side, Honduras and Ecuador doing community eye care work, she has established a North Side family eye care center that is amazing. My three year old son had his first eye appointment and Dr. Lyons knew exactly how to keep him calm and happy while doing the exam. She was thorough and confident. She communicated very effectively to both my son and to us, his parents. We left with no questions unanswered and took home relevant medical information. She's on top of her game!! I had an exam and she was equally calming in her approach to my care. Hey, I get scared at the doctors office too! She flowed effortlessly between my appointment and my sons, switching gears like a pro. I highly recommend this practice. Oh and her husband runs the front of the house and he's a peach. He did all the nitty gritty insurance PI work. He is great at what he does as well!! Lyons Family Eyecare provided me with a great experience for my daughters first eye exam. Dr. Stephanie Lyons not only explains everything in great detail, but also has all of the latest equipment. My daughter was actually watching a movie between procedures which kept her calm. They have a great little play area for the kids to stay busy while the parents are have exams as well. John Lyons was very helpful in picking out frames and helping me through the entire process. Overall this business will be here for a long time with such great owners actually running the store. One last praise in that Doctor Lyons taught me to put contacts into my eye in minutes a task that a lot of others have tried unsuccessfully. Disappointing Experience--- Called to schedule Dr appointment for my child and was very disappointment with the experience. Friendly staff, (Hannah) but not helpful. When I asked to speak with the Dr. I was passed to the office manager who was also not very helpful. I headed here since it was close to where I live, had good reviews, and I was able to get appointment very quickly. I had a really good experience . The office itself is bright, comfortable, and well decorated. I work in healthcare IT, so I geeked out a little over the exam equipment - so fancy! The staff is friendly. I called around 10 am and was able to get an appointment for noon that same day (impressive and very convenient since I was out running errands in the area). They are really friendly and accommodating. I feel like they honestly cared about me. They provided information both verbally, written, and e-mailed me by paperwork. They were through and spent the time to answer any question I had. They were a little hard for me to find. The signage was a little weird and address was 2 doors from where the GPS expected to find it. They provided me with an inaccurate quote when I booked the appointment. I let them know and they half admitted that billing is a little challenging based on number of factors and tax. They were a little more expensive than I normally spend, but I think it's totally worth it for the quality of service. I highly recommend them. Lyons is a great place to make picking out glasses fun. I have three kids that needed appointments for eye exams last year. One ended up needing glasses. The selection was great, especially for a picky boy. We had a slight hiccup this year with scheduling three appointments and were not happy with the glasses he had picked last year. The owner himself contacted me and wanted to make sure we were happy. John Lyons went above and beyond to be sure my son get a pair of glasses this year to make up for last year's pair. We spent today picking out new glasses and had the best gal helping us (even though my child was so indecisive!). She was insanely patient and laughed and joked with him the whole time. Having glasses since I was three, I find myself to be a connoisseur of all things optical. I knew I did not want to go to a "eyeglass store," as I want the primary source of drive for my visit to be to perfect my vision - which I believe can only be found with a optometry-focused office. While I did find this was the case at Lyons, they also had an ample and awesome selection of glasses and very helpful staff. The office was quite comfortable and up-to-date in technology. The decor makes the experience pleasant and Dr. Lyons performed a very thorough and comfortable exam. I was incredibly happy with my appointment! Side Note -- I will never buy glasses anywhere else! I walked in without expecting to purchase glasses. When I asked if I needed help finding frames, I mentioned I was just browsing, yet they were happy to help me find the perfect frame, even if it was only for fun. The staff were fun, honest, and excited to help me find a great fit. At the end of the appointment, I did end up purchasing a pair and I could not be happier. read more

We wanted someone who is considered a pediatric optician to do the exam rather than our normal office, because my daughter had a disastrous second semester and her test scores plummeted so we were thinking it was her eyes and thanks to Dr. Stephanie, that could be the problem and she recommended that she get reading glasses. I felt Dr. Stephanie and the exam service was excellent. That was five star. I also think that the exam was worth the close to $200 for the basic exam. She did an excellent job. Now the issue, we are self employed educators and do not have vision insurance. The basic eyeglass price with the cheapest frames came to over $400 which was just too high when my daughter is 10 and will probably misplace a pair or two since she is not wearing them full time. When I indicated that the price was more than I could afford, apparently there was no other option, since none was offered. I would have preferred to purchase them there because I get that this is a business with overhead and I did not want the hassle of going somewhere else, but over $600 for an exam and a basic pair of kids reading glasses without insurance is a bit too much. read more

Amazing business! Great family feel! I love this place! Last spring I had visited this shop in search of some sunglasses. I was taking a class near their location and was intrigued by their fun-looking storefront. The staff was extremely friendly, and the store was so clean and cute! I walked out with a great pair of sunglasses, and was very impressed with every aspect of my experience there. A few weeks ago I was in search of another pair of sunglasses. Myself and my two kids have been patients at Lyons Family Eye Care for four years and have always had a positive experience. The staff were very patient when my son learned to wear contacts at a young age (10 years) and taught him how to put them in during two sessions. The doctors are helpful in finding the right type of contact for him and sports. My eyes are a bit older and need more help finding the right contacts for fit and accurate vision and the doctors always have patience and kindness as I try to find the pair that help me see best. Every staff member is kind and respectful of the patients, always kind words and they remind you from visit to visit. This is the best eye doctor I have ever been to! If your kid is thinking about getting contact lenses, just make an appointment with Elizabeth. She is patient, encouraging and completely focused on the kid while giving a lesson on how to wear contacts. This is really important because kids need to demonstrate that they can wear their contacts before being allowed to take them home. If they can't in a 45 minute lesson, they're asked to come back and try again. If success doesn't happen in three lessons, there is a waiting period. The pressure was on when we went in. And then, enter Elizabeth. She was calm, soothing, encouraging. When the kid dropped his first contact, she said not to worry. When he almost got it in, she cheered him on. The nerves went away and the kid went home with his trial pack. The lesson includes repeated reminders about hygiene, how to check to make sure that the contacts are in correctly and the all important right way to remove contacts. We now have a delighted brand new contact lens wearer. If you want to skip the stress, seriously just go to Elizabeth. I love this place. The staff are kind, warm and so knowledgeable. We see Dr. Maino several times a year and he has a way with my 2 young kids and my one son with special needs. He is an advocate for families struggling with school issues and has offered very helpful guidance in our own struggles. We are always happy with the service when ordering glasses and paying our bill. Most documents are electronic so when our FSA bugs us for receipts Lyon's just emails them to me! We see Phoebe weekly for vision therapy. My kiddo is excited to see her every time- and therapy works! I have researched other pediatric therapy locations and this place is so reasonably priced compared to other locations when paying out of pocket. When we walk in on Wednesdays, everyone knows my son's name and warmly welcomes us. Parking is never a problem and we have appointments in the evenings when the community is busier. I had a great experience at LFEC. They had state of the art equipment from checking me on the Ipad to machinery that I had not seen at other eye care providers The space is very cool. Dr. Lyons explained everything that she did and took time to answer a few questions that I had. They processed my insurance efficiently and ordered my contacts right away. I now live in the building above Lyon's Eyecare. Last year, I was looking for a local, non-chain eye doctor. When I saw Lyon's Eyecare, I knew I had to try it out. I had such a fantastic experience. Dr. Lyons is really great to work with. It was a breeze to make an appointment. The actual appointment went really well. I typically hate going to the eye doctor due to the dilation and ALL OF THE QUESTIONS (1 or 2, 2 or 3, 1 or 3.... Ahhhh I don't know!) Dr. Lyons is such a terrific eye doctor. She fully explained everything to me, and she was incredibly thorough. Also, the office is run incredibly well. Dr. Lyon's husband runs the office, and he is so nice. Mr Lyons, of course, we went ahead and had her prescription renewed elsewhere. What you fail to realize is that, despite what you say that it is the fault of my insurance carrier, you provided the advice to wait until after her prescription expired. Instead of practicing good customer service and admitting your part in the misinformation, you chose to place the blame on us (the customer) telling us to pay full price for an exam at your office or sending us off to another office. We chose to go elsewhere. I would have been satisfied with a small admission of your part in this misinformation, but you chose to blame us for believing the information you provided and not checking our insurance separately. Honestly, your position on the matter suggests you are more concerned about the money than about a happy customer. We may be a drop in the bucket for your business, but we are a family of four that will unfortunately require regular prescription updates. read more

The staff can definitely be more normal and nice. They are overly fake and enthusiastic which is annoying and insulting to me. I feel like when I went in for a visit I was treated like a child and not very well respected. I also had trouble making an appointment. I called and couldn't get an appointment for over 2 months then i had to reschedule and it took another month to get an appointment which i thought was ridiculous and unaccommodating. The doctor herself was very unprofessional and rude. She did not explain anything and was keeping my prescription a secret. Lastly, when I went to "check out", the staff just threw out a number I owed. I asked what the amount consisted of and if I could get a receipt. They said they would email me the receipt which i have still not received. read more

I'm so grateful to have found a good eye doctor in this city. I have terrible vision and hate going to the eye doctor, so I'm glad to have found someone I can trust. First, any place that has two friendly and adorable dogs hanging out is okay by me. Lucky and Chance are super gentle and would be good with kids. John, the business manager, is super nice and helpful when you're trying to pick out glasses. As I don't think I look good in any glasses and would have been completely helpless picking them out on my own (plus, my eyes were dilated at the time), I really appreciated his assistance. He also took the time to call my insurance company and figure out what they would cover for my new frames and lenses, and when I needed an itemized statement a few weeks later, he emailed it to me immediately after I called. Dr. Stephanie Lyons was very professional while still being friendly, and the eye exam was quick and painless (she also used some very cool new technology for the exam that I hadn't seen before). I could say more, but I would just end up ranting about the other eye doctors I've had in Chicago, and that seems unnecessary. This was the first time since leaving my childhood optometrist that I haven't been totally freaked out at the eye doctor, and that's kind of amazing. read more
