Did you, dear reader, know that there was an actual abbey in this location during the Middle Ages? 300 feet below this station, there actually was. Gypsum (a soft stone) mines were ubiquitous back in the day. There existed a vast network of quarry tunnels, which, in time, did need to be filled by the city by high-pressured concrete. Needless, the mines closed in 1840's, The actual metro platform was built at bedrock, 285!! steps below Place des Abbesses (where the station is located).. yup! Each Art Nouveau stop was designed by architect Hector Guimard, and really define Paris as an art haven. The first metro opened in Paris in 1900!

We came to this rail hub in Paris for our high speed train to Amsterdam. We were on the…read more"Pre-tour" portion of our river cruise and had to go to Zamdam to catch our ship. That required us to get the main station on Amsterdam, then catch a bus. What can I say. It was your typical train station with many trains ready to go and you could also catch a subway here. It was easy to maneuver through and while I was waiting I went for a coffee and a pastry. That's the special thing about Paris... even in the train station was good coffee and great pasteries. I noticed lots of Police patroling the area which definately helps make you feel just a bit more safe and comfortable. Boarding the train was quick and easy and they left right on time. KUDOs to the team here at the Gare du Nord.

Although not as bad of an experience as the TGV train, the waiting experience of Eurostar just…read moremakes flying look amazing. The Gare du Nord station was frightfully warm and there were very few seats. Generally while the space felt poorly designed for crowds, the signage was okay, although still slightly confusing to navigate. Once on the train our experience wasn't too bad as we'd splurged for midclass so we were seated in a quiet area, but that being said - I really wish our attendant had prevented parents who had seats elsewhere walking into our car with their young children and letting them wander around being loud. All in all, the experience was good, but I'm not sure how often we'd take the train to Paris, especially since there is no Disney linkup.

I love this metro. The 12 is my favorite line. I think it's the smell that I like because it's an…read moreold line. It smells like oil grease and is never really busy. I guarantee you that 87 percent of the time you will be able to find a seat on this metro. There's a rat that lives in the middle of the track ( I forgot his name) but it always amazes me how he knows exactly when the metro is coming and then he jumps back into his hole and waits for it to pass by. This metro isn't as glamorous as the 1 or Louvre- rivoli but It can take you to Pigalle and also to the left bank or montparnasse, saint Lazare train stations. This particular metro brings you right on to rue chateaudun and is a small walk to Trinity and saint George.

I actually hurried down here because despite a wander through the Tulieries being quite a pleasant experience. Anyway, this is a station that pretty much runs from the Louvre all the way up to La Defense, and the Avenue Champs d'Elysee. So MANY steps This…read moremetro station was near the hotel. Very easy to use. But.......from the north from the hotel there is an uphill walk and a flight of stairs to get to the entrance. Inside the station there's four flights of stairs to get down to the platform. At the entrance there are kiosks to purchase tickets. These tickets are good for metro, bus and tram. The kiosk takes credit cards and cash. There offer several languages. If you are in the city for several days, I recommend the T+ ten pack. The pack makes each ticket $1.80. Actually all the Paris metro stations were clean and easy to use. Good signage for lines and directions. An electric board at the platform tells you how many minutes the next two trains are out. My last recommendations- try to avoid rush hours, and load the Paris RATP app. It's easy to use and was a great help finding the lines to take. Rode it alone without issues.

My nephew and I had planned a weekend trip to Luxembourg, and this station was the origination of the 2.5 hour high-speed trip, beginning early on a Saturday morning. We came from different places in Paris using Metro, and met up here. The walk from the Metro part of the station to the main central holding area takes a bit of time, with need to closely follow signs pointing to Gare de l'Est. About 24 minutes before the scheduled departure of our train, the platform number came up on the big board. At that point, we used the QR code from our purchased ticket to pass through the security gate of the platform. Then it was a long outdoor walk parallel to the train until one finds the correct car. We left right on-time. We came back to the same station from Luxembourg, and it was a simple matter of reversing direction back to the Metro side of the station to get back to our dorm/hotel.

Navigating thru this station is a nightmare once you arrive by Metro. Missed our train because of…read moreno clear signs and help available in the station.
