While camping at New Glarus Woods State Park we decided to skip the campfire breakfast and head into a nearby town for breakfast. We found this café online and were very happy we did! It is a quintessential, small town midwestern café. You feel transported back in time to when things were simple, agriculture booming, and rural living was the best livin'. We arrived at about 8 AM on a Sunday and were seated immediately. Seating is severely limited and this is not a great place for large parties. Inside is cramped but clean. There are a few booths and a row of bar stools that get you a front row seat to the cooking action. There is a public restroom inside. The waitress was hustling and very pleasant. The Chef was my favorite - he was busting his chops and had great one-liner quips about how he prepares everything I the order it was received. Got to keep it fair and I respect that! The food was hot and hit the spot. I really want to return one day to grab a slice (or two) of their homemade pie! I also could not stop taking photos of the place - it was the cutest! During a few most relaxing days out of town, in rural Wisconsin, about 45 minutes from Madison, my friend who lives in the region took me to M&M Cafe for brunch. We arrived around 11:30 a.m. and found just a single booth occupied. The older yet quite spry and engaging lady behind the counter quickly welcomed us with a smile and friendly words. Already, we felt we were at home and in a place we already knew and with a business person who already knew us. M&M Cafe is quite small, only about 5 booths long and approximately half as long of a countertop with stools. It's old-fashioned and quaint, with a wide range of Americana on the walls, 50-plus-year-old year old furniture and Floors to match. The cafe is well visited yet in excellent condition and perfectly clean. The American breakfast and lunch fare menu is simple and not too big, just the way I like it. Prices are small-town and could even go up a dollar for each item and still be quite reasonable. Coffee is an endless cup here. I ordered an omelet with vegetables and ham, with perfectly toasted and buttered triangles of wheat toast, and it was excellent. There was just enough grease to know you're at an American style, old-school cafe yet so very little so as to tell you the owners and cook, who may be one of the same, really do care a lot about the food they provide for their guests. Coffee was nothing special but always hot and always fresh, and those two last points count equally as the first. Well my friend and I were enjoying conversation that we could have it a quiet level, the restaurant filled completely and we had no clue what was happening outside of our wooden booth. When we noticed, we also felt the buzz of energy and hubbub of conversation from everyone who came in exactly at lunch hour. M&M was a wonderful lunch spot and a place to definitely return to for more. read more

An absolute hidden gem , Monticello is known for a stop on a bike trail , a cheese factory outside town that makes Limburger But this place is the best breakfast you can find and it's not as crowded as mickey's dairy bar in Madison. It's got the small time vibe , nothing too flashy but good food and great service read more

A 1906! very small town diner with all that entails. Tiny, warm, friendly, a limited menu but surprisingly large selection for its size. Breakfast appears to be their specialty which I missed since I was on the hunt for lunch. Had a BLT like Mom would have made. Super cute place in a very cute town. We went in on a Sunday morning - around 10am. It is very small as previous reviews have stated but we were able to get a booth. The server was very nice. I ordered Biscuits and Gravy but they were out - I went with corn beef hash with eggs...VERY good. Partner had eggs with hash browns with cheese (must be a Wisconsin thing) and patty sausage - very good. Our service was excellent and I would 1000% recommend this place. We had the unfortunate experience of going here for breakfast this morning. The waitress and little one were wonderful. They are very hardworking and courteous. A gentleman came in 10 minutes after us and got his food well before we did. He was actually done before we finished getting our food. The third person in our party of three got his food about 8 minutes after we got ours. Meanwhile, our food was getting cold. The waitress asked how everything was and she was politely informed about the situation. The cook, probably owner, being only a few feet away went ballistic. He really needs to be on meds for his anger control issues. It was very humiliating to be screamed at the way he did. The other customers were mortified as well. He was so angry that I thought it was going to get physical. The third person in our party finally got up and left. The cook then continued to berate us uncontrollably for a few more minutes. At that point we asked for our check. He screamed at us to just get out. It was pretty sad. I love going to diners all over the country and this is the first time I have ever experienced something like this. read more

This is like a diner you see in movies or TV, but I'd never actually seen in real life. It was super cute! Seems to be owned by two people, one cooks, and one is the waitress. Both were so genuine and nice, too. They took time to talk to us and made us feel welcome. Couple that with the amazing food, and we have a winner!! I ordered the build your own omelette with cheddar and bacon, plus green peppers for an additional 0.50. It's two eggs, so it's easier to handle, but definitely did not skip on the adds I put in! It was delish. It came with toast, hashbrowns were an additional charge, but I don't normally eat them anyways, so I was fine with skipping it. The price was about $6 too which was downright awesome! My guy got scrambled eggs with toast, bacon and hashbrowns, and proudly declared he was in the "clean plate club" upon finishing. We both couldn't stop eating! Their toast came out pre-buttered, with way more than I would normally add on myself, hence it was super good! But be warned of that! Our meals plus one coffee was about $14.65, which was a pretty big steal compared to Chicagoland. I would definitely recommend this place! read more

I honestly can't agree with the reviews. We came from Texas and we were told this is the place to go. NO it is not! Has the health inspector ever stopped by. The booths are tiny, the bathrooms even smaller. I was not happy to see the cook wipe his sweat from his face with his hand then touch the eggs with the same hand. The cashier worked the register then went and buttered the toast. It maybe mom and pop, but they are not my mom and pop so cleanliness is a must. The grease on the walls around the grill top is not a flattering thing to look at. I will say, they were very friendly to the little old guy regulars though. They liked it! read more

A "don't miss it" destination for great food (breakfast all day) in a 30's - 50's era small town diner that is a single $. The down home feel of small diner USA is pleasant and unique. The mom and pop team are friendly and add to the genuine throwback atmosphere. We had breakfast (food was perfect), and the coffee second to none. I kept smelling what other were having and thinking that I got to come back for the other menu items. The bill was a pleasant surprise as well -- very inexpensive. If you are riding the bike trail, the short trip into town is more than worth it. There are bike racks out side. While you're there, check out the 40's style corner gas station next door. read more

A great authentic Diner with real homemade, reasonably priced food and friendly staff and clientele. We have been driving from Illinois to this Swiss area for years and usually dine here (if we arrive before their 2 PM closing time). The daily specials are great, especially the Swiss Kalberwurst and Rosti. The Amish cream pie (similar to Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie) is also great. This place is a regular stop for me. Jim's dad ran Schuberts in Mount Horeb for years. This place is better, and the staff is as friendly as they come. Rural clientele, so if you're uncomfortable around country people this is a chance to get acquainted. read more

We went there on a Thursday for lunch. The waitress gave us water and took our order. Then we waited. And waited. Another woman, who told us she was a neighbor of the restaurant, was sitting at the counter and she delivered our food to our table. She was very nice. What happened to the waitress? She was in the back and didn't seem to care about us. Pancakes were just OK, ham burned on the edges. Food was nothing special. When we were done, we sat and waited for our bill. Ten minutes later the nice lady told us to stand by the cash register to get out bill. We stood there another ten minutes, The cook looked at us and then went into the back for some reason. We didn't see him again. A lady eating at the counter looked at us and shrugged her shoulders as if to say, what do you expect from this place? Finally, I threw $15 on the register and we left. My wife and I love to go to diners in small towns. We will never go back to this one! Not real clean IMO. Rude cook and waitress, nice neighbor lady. read more
