Firstly, my car is perfect - brought online/phone without a test drive, yet 100% what they said it was. But you care about the business: I'm only buying from them from now on because the prices are very fair, they are honest about the cars, and provide great service (including delivery anywhere in NZ!). I dealt with Dean mainly (also Richard) but the whole place is professional business - focused on high turnover and getting repeat customers. All/most cars are AA tested - better than any test drive, so far as I am concerned. Their starting prices are fair market rate and don't have hidden extras. I check NZ wide and their cars are around the same price as auction/private sales - plus you get consumer protection. They do knock the prices down further, but don't expect too much unless it hasn't sold for a while. The best thing was the service - it was just like a new car dealers - for example, Dean organised a towbar to be added (only $550 including the safety inspection) and delivery (Au to PN overnight for just $330!).

Absolutely horrible experience and customer service!…read more We went to CMG and test drove three Volkwagens and all needed jump starts (which is ok seeing that these cars don't get driven much) and we got good service up to the point of us deciding to buy a 2009 VW Golf. Can't remember the name of the sales rep but he was nice and not pushy at all. But after purchasing my VW Golf I had several issues, such as: while picking up the car and arranging with Robbie to pick it up at 12:30pm, who then was not even on sight because he got himself lunch. And therefore made us wait so we were late for our work, knowing that this transaction was urgent was simply disappointing. Also, after 5 days the battery gave out, therefore I called Robbie to see whether they can pay for a new battery (Consumers Guarantees Act is the best base for this reasoning) or help facilitate any solutions for this issue but instead of offering help I got told that it must have been my fault because I must have had my car keys close to the car (wtf) or left the lights on over night (which I did not as my car lights are switched on "automatic" meaning it senses if the car needs lights on or off). So basically I got fed up that I did not get help so I drove to them and demanded for a new battery to be placed in my car. Even then I got looked at strangely and no one was offering help or any kind of apology. Until one CMG sales person called Robbie (who did not talk to us at all but went straight to the mechanic so he can deal with us instead). Unfortunately, even after getting a "new" battery fitted (couldn't tell if it was new as they drove it into the workshop) we got told that it had 0 CCA (cold cranking performance) meaning the starting power of the battery was gone and is close to failure as well. This is based on the AA Roadservice officer that I called for a jump start and battery test. Now I had to spend additional $327 for a PROPER battery to the already piling cost of $15k which includes the car and warranty. Additionally, the "new" replacement battery that was fitted in my Golf is not meant for a Golfs as it is under powered and made by Hyundai. The Hyuandai battery has 530CCA but a VW needs a battery with at least 740CCA. All in all guys be careful when you buy a car from City Motor Groups. The jingle might be catchy but the service was sketchy. Get your own AA inspection as these seem to be outdated!

The rest of the staff completeing the sale paper work were also very nice and efficient we put down a fully refundable deposit to hold the car while we fonally decided. And when a small problem was found after the purchase the came the next day with a courtesy car to use whilst they took it to rectify.. I cant recommend the car dealership enough ... I called them three times to try and get a new estimated arrival time, each time they said they'd phone me back after talking to their driver but never did and I had to explain my situation every time. Once the guy got to me he complained about getting out to me at that time due to traffic, (but the original time wasn't during rush hour). Then he tried to lowball me and offer less than what they originally quoted, luckily I had it in email. He refused to call his boss to discuss the discrepancy so I had to AGAIN phone the company in front of him, who then said they'd phone him. They never did phone him. I asked why he was reducing the price and he said it was due to the inconvenient time (again, he was late and I'd offered multiple times earlier that week but they wanted Friday afternoon). I told him this wasn't a valid reason as it had nothing to do with the condition of my car. Then he said he'd give me the low amount of my claim range. (Fine. But why so hard...) He then said he was having a really tough time in his personal life and this wasn't helping his situation because now his boss will be mad at him. But it was his boss who gave me the original claim amount... I know I was being played and I know all these phone calls (and also lack thereof) were no coincidence. I am a young female and reality is that this has happened to me before, but not so unprofessionally as this place. I strongly advise to find a new wrecker to take your car junk and save yourselves the time, hassle, and interaction with sketchy people.

People - PLEASE beware if buying from this company!! I…read morepurchased a vehicle and queried about getting an alarm system fitted given that the vehicle needed to stay at the dealership for several days whilst they upgraded/changed bits to my requirements. I was told that the new alarm would cost $940-00 (fitted) The staff also stated that given the fact that I had just purchased a vehicle from them, there would be profit made by the company re the installation of the alarm. And that the $940-00 was what they would be charged by the "independent" car alarm installer. I was also told that the alarm to be fitted was to be a 4 star Mongoose alarm. Based on the above, I asked them to go ahead and install the said alarm. When the vehicle was finally picked up, I again queried the alarm and was made to look silly when the salesman and manager categorically stated that my vehicle was fitted with alarm. Given that it was fitted by an "independent" and cos I was not satisfied with the explanation, I requested a copy of the invoice, as well as contact details of the "independent" installer as I wish to query how the alarm worked, where the override switch was, etc etc. I was initially told that they would be happy to supply the invoice. When nothing was forthcoming (they prob thought I would not see this through), they refused to supply the invoice, citing privacy issues. PRIVACY issues?? For an alarm that I, as the owner, needed to know how to operate!! I contacted Holden Australia. Only then would the company provide SOME info on the :independent" installer. Turns out if is the panel beating shop NEXT DOOR!! They were great and stated that they only did what was asked of them by the dealer. When pressed for more info, I learnt that the dealer had asked the panel beater to install an UPGRADE to the existing CanBus factory fitted immobiliser (which is NOT what I asked for or agreed to). What's worse is that the panel beater claimed that the cost to the public to do such an upgrade was $399-00!! I had the vehicle checked by 2 other installers and learnt that the alleged upgrade consisted of installing 2 parts (each of which cost $50 retail). The beauty of it all is that the upgrades itself was faulty and not fit for purpose. I then took this company to the Disputes Tribunal and they once again lied to the Registrar. Sadly for them though, the Registrar saw through their lies and found that a FULL refund was due to me for the $940-00. Even then, I had to chase them for monies that they should never have charged me in the first place. PLEASE be very aware when dealing with this company!! I went to them thinking they were reputable and honest. The experience was DISGUSTING, DODGY and PATHETIC, to say the least.

The Car Fair is great and well organised with heaps of cars to look at if you are interested in buying. The owners usually stay with their cars so that the buyer can thoroughly check the car inside and out and ask any questions that they might have. I hate buying a car, it's always such a dreaded thing and you never know whether you're going to get a shitter or not. I'm not saying that the Ellerslie Car Fair contains no shitters, but at least you have a bunch of cars in one place, which are all being sold individually. You can check the cars out properly and even take them for a test drives.

But at the Ellerslie Car Fair you can see the car for yourself, right in front of you and instantly form an opinion. You can take a thorough look inside and out, you can touch it, smell it (and even taste it if you really wanted). You can speak to the owner face to face, ask questions and set up a test drive. If you want the car you can negotiate a price then and there (no trying to guess reserves or battling an auto-bid). I've bought my last two cars at the Ellerslie Car fair and have been stoked with both of them. If you've just started the car hunt it's also a good way to gauge what is available in your price range. For both buyers and sellers I would recommend the Car Fair; it's for people that want action and can't be bothered stuffing around
