You know what... I hate this place lol I said hey, the food wasn't too bad, the prices weren't too astronomically high for the area, so I decided to go back to eat there again with my group. I approach the door on a Saturday night and an employee outside stops me and asks if I have a reservation. I said no. He said don't even bother coming in then because he has no tables free. I said oh ok and left. I check OpenTable. Countless reservation times are available, all asap. I make a reservation for a time ten minutes away. I come back in ten minutes. I get inside and there is maybe 3 tables full, the rest empty. I tell them I have a reservation. The same employee comes over to take me to a table and tells me it was "sly" of me to make a reservation and come back. Huh? Someone in my party ordered the fish and chips and there were fish bones scattered throughout the fish. But hey, the desert was good. read more

Stopped in here to kill time before meeting my family up for dinner. I had a few beers and a great convo with the person sitting next to me. Staff was friendly and appeared to be close and friendly with each other. I did try the clam chowder and found it to be really good. Came here after work and the ambiance was fine for an Irish pub downtown. Service was meh, when I asked what "Irish spices" were in the Irish spice bag, they said "Irish spices" and then I was like okay so like "salt, pepper and...something else?" And they were like "yeah, Irish spices" --not super helpful. I tried it anyway, it was really mostly just salt that I tasted and was heavy on the fries, light on the chicken and veggies. "Meet me in the pub about half past one We're goin' out and have some fun" (Fats Domino) I asked Microsoft Co-pilot how many Irish pubs are in Boston. Its answer was "Boston boasts a staggering 242 Irish pubs, making it one of the most Irish cities in America in terms of pub density". We visited one for lunch today, located at the Park Plaza Hotel. M. J. O'Connors sure has the look of an Irish Pub with dark wood tables and chairs, tin ceiling, dark wood paneling, a fireplace, and a very elegant bar. They offer a broad menu of appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, pizzas and sandwiches. Of course they have Irish favorites like Kilkenny steak tips, bangers & mash, Chicken Curry, Guinness onion soup, and Irish cocktail sausages. I don't know if corned beef and cabbage egg rolls are technically an Irish favorite, but they're on the menu as well. I went light for lunch because I knew I'd be going heavy for dinner at Fire + Ice, so I went with a Caesar Salad ($16 for Romaine hearts, grana padano cheese, garlic-parmesan croutons & creamy Caesar dressing) and a cup of their "Hall of Fame Chowder" ($11). Why Hall of Fame? Well, their chowder is a three-time winner for best clam chowder at Boston's Harborfest. PRO TIP Although M.J. O'Connors is featured as a dining option on the Hilton Boston Park Plaza's website, it actually isn't accessible from the hotel! We went here over the weekend while we were in the area. It was a long wait for a table, so we just sat at their bar. We had their chicken tenders and the fish and chips. Both were really good! My best friend and I grabbed apps and drinks here on Tuesday evening and we liked it! It's super close to the Boston Commons, where we were coming from. We ordered buffalo wings and a caesar salad to share, both of which were delicious. Perfect portions and it hit the spot. Came here with coworkers after finishing up with a trade show. We were all tired and looking forward to grabbing a bite to eat. This was close to our hotel so it wasn't that hard of a choice to make. The staff was very friendly, and we were seated immediately. We each got something different and we all enjoyed our food. I got the fish and chips because it is one of my go to's when ordering. Staying at the Hilton and wanted an informal meal. Found this place on Yelp. My partner and I had a nice meal tonight. Started with clam chowder and the soup of the day (French onion soup). Both were delicious. The menu says the clam chowder won three awards and I believe it. Thick, creamy and lots of clam. The onion soup had a nice amount of cheese and a tasty, slightly sweet broth that was really good. For entrees, we had the salmon with vegis and rice (subbing mashed potatoes for the rice) and the fish and chips. The salmon was a very healthy portion of tasty salmon with a light glaze. The mashed potatoes were "real" (not boxed) and the vegis were well prepared. The vegis were Brussels sprouts (a restaurant substitution for broccoli that they were out of) - they could have used a little seasoning (even just salt and pepper). The portion of fish in the fish and chips was HUGE. The breading was not too thick and the fish had a nice crunch. The fish came with a healthy portion of fries and a small cup of cole slaw, which was fine. The tartar sauce was good; the cocktail sauce could have used a bit more bite. Honestly, the soups were so rich and filling that my partner and I left a lot of our entrees on the table. The food was so good that we both were disappointed, but we're staying in a hotel, so no way to preserve leftovers. The server was friendly and efficient. The restaurant is an Irish pub (I had a Guinness) and decor-wise, it has an Irish pub vibe. The music playing throughout the place is fun rock-type. Very enjoyable. One odd thing: when we arrived and asked for a table, the greeter said he didn't have any tables, but he would find some place for us. He showed us to a table and then left. We looked around, and every table in the room was empty. As Michigan alumni and fans who moved to Boston, we immediately sought out where a Michigan bar was and MJ's was it! We went last night for the Michigan vs Oklahoma game and were told there were no more tables, however after just a minute a table opened up in the perfect spot! We were seated shortly thereafter and stayed for the entire game. It was full to the brim with Michigan fans and made our hearts happy. Julio, our waiter, was patient and not pushy with us which was appreciated and he celebrated with us when Michigan scored. The onion soup was some of the best we have had. My wife LOVED her fish and chips. The cheeseburger was just fine. The beer was good and we also indulged in shooters which were just delicious. I had the French onion soup and it was delicious. My only complaint is that the bowl wasn't big enough! I should've gotten two! lol I also had the pastrami on rye. It was a big portion and served with fries. Fries were hot and perfectly cooked. The bread was fresh and yummy. Large serving of pastrami. The service was fast and friendly. What is wrong with this place? Showed up at 3pm late March and was immediately confronted by a manager telling me that I was barred in what was clearly a case of mistaken identity! I have frequented this place since day one. I have bartended in Ireland and Boston for decades proving that there is indeed a first time for everything. If you can make it past the barricades that they erect at the front door the inflated egos,the make up rules, the lies and the name calling, the kitchen actually does a great job and the bar scene has always been lively. If however you don't make it remember ther are plenty of other places that would welcome your business. BTW don't waste your time sending emails. Staying in Boston, I wanted to make sure I took advantage of the Irish bars. MJ's did not disappoint. My colleague got the grilled cheese with clam chowder, while I stuck with the fish and chips. We were there for lunch, it wasn't too busy and the food was prompt and fresh. Maybe it's because I live a desert normally but damn was that good fish. We were in Boston to see the Blue Man group and made a reservation here for lunch, as it's within walking distance of the Charles Playhouse. I don't think a reservation was needed because we were only one of two groups that were there, however, they just about rolled out the red carpet for us. They knew exactly who we were when we entered, every staff member saying hello as we made our way to our seats. Our waiter was kind, charismatic and charming. We started with sweet thai chili wings that were crunchy, yet still moist on the inside. My southwest salad had a whole chicken breast atop it. It was quite filling. Having a little one with me, I always appreciate when a kids menu is an option. He was happy with his buttered pasta and I was happy not to spend a fortune on a bigger dish that he would likely only take a few bites of anyways. It was strange when we came in being led to what seemed the back, but there are actually 2 entrances. It is very busy for a Tuesday night, but it is the city, so maybe that's normal. Service was slow to order, but food came out hot, fresh, and quicker than giving our order! Our server was nice, but it's slammed and probably hard to come back to check in. The fish and chips was a large, meaty, flaky fish with crispy yet not greasy batter. The fries were good, but the fish is the show stopper. The Guinness Onion soup was wonderful! If you don't like onions, you will still like this. If you didn't actually see the onions, you wouldn't know they were there. I love French onion soup, but this was better. The corned beef and cabbage egg rolls were also extremely tasty. The are full sized egg rolls cut in half (I wish they weren't because I can't eat all of them.
