Service was great, the staff from the door guy checking ID to the bar tenders were friendly and helpful. If you're looking for something to eat there's a decent chance you can get a table or spot at the bar without too long a wait like you'll come across at most restaurants in downtown Boston. read more

I ordered a beer by having the bartender surprise me and they made an excellent choice! The interior of this bar is so beautiful. If you have the chance, do a little wander and admire the floor carvings and the bar. I asked one of the workers, (Sean I believe? My husband and I came here for St. Patrick's Day lunch and had a great time. We arrived around 10am and Florjan B., the nicest guy, was our server. I had the fish and chips and my husband had the corned beef dinner entree (very good). Great Irish coffees and Irish beers, amongst other drinks on the menu. They had Irish rock playing, followed by a live band. We had no wait arriving as early as we did, but there was more of a crowd when we left, around 11:30. This place was by our hotel and seemed very popular so we decided to check it out and have dinner. We went in and it was a 45 minute wait. We went to the very crowded bar area and ordered drinks. The service at the bar was quick with being how busy they were. We were buzzed for our table. We got a great table by the stage. Not right next to it. There was a table between the stage and us. The first waitress checked on us then disappeared. We waited awhile before our order was taken. Eventually another waitress came over and helped us. She was great! I noticed the first waitress left. I ordered onion soup and the lobster roll and my husband got the trio. The soup was delicious and the lobster roll was ok, nothing to brag about. The trio had great flavor. The music was fun (Frank Ryan). He interacted with the crowd. We enjoyed a shot of Jameson and my husband had Guinness. This was a fun pub. Even though there were 2 birthday parties going on in this tiny pub, the service was great. I felt bad for the staff and anybody who had to squeeze by them but the staff was very friendly about it. read more

Let me start by saying -- my husband absolutely loved this place! We visited The Black Rose on our first day in Boston and loved it so much that we came back a few days later. During our first visit, we ordered a few drinks -- a shot of Jameson, a Guinness, and a martini -- all excellent. We started with the Corned Beef & Cabbage Spring Rolls, which I'd highly recommend. For our mains, we had the Fish and Chips and the Irish Spice Bag, and my husband couldn't stop raving about how good everything was. We even picked up a Christmas ornament from the gift shop to remember our visit! Our server was from Switzerland and had such great energy -- super friendly and made the experience even better. When we returned a few days later, we tried the Irish Coffees and both the hot and cold lobster rolls -- and honestly, we still can't decide which one was our favorite because they were both amazing. The Black Rose has such a fun, welcoming atmosphere, and it quickly became one of our favorite spots in Boston. We'll definitely be back every time we visit the city! read more

This is a stereotypical Irish pub restaurant, in the heart of Boston in the Faneuil Hall area. Drinks were tasty, but could be a little slow- not a huge surprise considering how popular it seems to be. I was happy to find they offered a hot (CT style) buttered lobster roll. Prices reflected lobster industry prices this season with a bit of a tourist "tax" built in, nothing to complain about. The roll was loaded with lobby meat, the bread was decent. Great Irish pub in Boston just steps from Faneuil hall that has live music every day. It's more of a bar than a restaurant, but the food was decent enough to satiate, especially after a few pints. After a 45 min wait for a table large enough to accommodate our party of 6, we decided to split up into 2 groups of 3 to get off of the cold, snow covered sidewalk. I honestly wasn't expecting great service, but I was happily wrong! We were immediately greeted w a smile, got our first round in minutes and the food came out fast and hot. Kids had wings and we split a French dip. Once again, the food was serviceable but they aren't hand cutting fries here. They have a nice beer menu with some local craft and an extensive Irish whiskey list. The music was lively and appreciated. It really added to the whole experience. Overall we had a great time and would go back but probably just for drinks and music. Probably a 3.5 if I could give 1/2 stars. read more

We came here as a last minute lunch and although it was busy, our server was prompt and quickly served us our orders right after we ordered, we were quite surprised with how fast they came out! Both of us tried the Irish trio and it was the perfect little bite of shepards pie, bangers and mash, and Guinness beef stew. We also tried their lobster bisque, which was very sweet, but tasted so warm and delicious on the rainy day. Their stew was full of flavor, as was the shepards pie. I like a good Irish pub and this is one of the best I've ever been to. My friends and I decided to try this place for dinner. Ambiance was nice and easily better than the other pubs we've tried in Boston. Waitstaff was friendly, attentive and fun to talk to. Food was phenomenal. I started with the Celtic Chicken Sandwich. Chicken was grilled tender and juicy. Cheddar cheese was a nice touch. Both the sauce and onions were infused with the flavors of different types of alcohol. Wonderfully delicious. French fries were nice as well. Next came the bangers and mash, which I've never had before. Sausages melted in my mouth. Mashed potatoes were buttery and smooth. Gravy was absolutely savory. It was almost too rich, but I loved it. Finally I had the bread pudding. Chocolatey and decadent. Again the chocolate sauce was flavored with alcohol and the bitterness kept the desert from being too sweet. Genius. All I can say is, the Irish really know how to eat. When in Boston, it is necessary to visit an Irish Pub. The Black Rose was a true Boston experience. Located near the Aquarium, it had a lively atmosphere without being so noisy it wasn't enjoyable. While they didn't have live music when I visited, they did fawn have live Irish music. I came in a busy Sunday so I had to wait a a bit to be served but the server was friendly and checked on me frequently without being overbearing. I had the Irish stew and, to be honest, when it first arrived I was a little disappointed in the size of the serving. But it turned out to be the perfect size. Thick and meaty and served with two soft pieces of garlic bread, the stew was glorious. It had big chunks of beef, nice size potatoes and carports with a thick broth. I ended up so full I didn't have room for dessert. But I will definitely return when I can. read more

Touristing around Boston yesterday, my beloved, decided he wanted lunch at an Irish pub. The Black Rose was close. It had reasonable reviews so in we went. My irritation began with how crowded the bar is, I use a walker and the tables were so close together. It was very difficult to move about the room and access our table without having to move furniture. I realize for the rest of the world this is maybe not an important point, but if I have to move furniture in order to get my seat, that's a problem for me. Then the waitress wasn't listening and brought me the wrong order. I ate my lunch anyway, it was OK not great. Then I needed to use the restroom. The identified restrooms in the Black Rose are up three stairs. It is extremely difficult for me to move up a stairway. I had to leave my walker struggle up the stairs into the bathroom back out again. When I complained about this lack of ADA accessibility to the waitress , asking her if ADA access was not required in Boston she laughed and said oh I'm so sorry the sign on the first floor bathroom has fallen down. It's the bathroom for handicap and diaper changing. And then she laughed again. Maybe she was nervous and embarrassed anyway I asked her to pass it on to management and get the sign put up so that people like me would not have to struggle to use the bathroom or be unable to use the bathroom she just looked at me. I realize for 99% of the world this is all no big deal but for me it's a problem. Fortunately, we don't live here. I won't be going back to the Black Rose, but just wanna express my unhappiness and frustration with the service and management of the pub. read more
