That's how you know it's legit! We visited twice while in El Nido. The 1st time around, we pointed at the fresh seafood outside to have it grilled up and served to us upstairs some time later. I had a Unicorn Fish, a sweet, slightly briny white fish native to El Nido. My friend had a fresh Yellowtail and we also opted for the biggest should-be lobster prawn they had. So delicious. The 2nd visit, we watched the sunset from a window side table as a close to our island hopping tours. On said visit, we ordered Sizzling Pork Sisig, Beef Kaldereta, and Crispy Pata. Each dish was absolutely ginormous and automatically comes with rice. The ultimate best value on the island! Yes, dishes such as Crispy Pata and Sisig are on the fluffier/ fattier side but that's what makes it GOOD. Beef Kaldereta was saucier than I am accustomed but I engorged myself in its richness. Keep in mind, dishes are 250-350 PHP but are served as family style portions. Service was hit or miss at least when it came to getting the bill, but you really gotta raise your hand and yell at them -- it is the way, the Filipino way! They are also more likely to cater to the locals first which may contribute to a wait, but with such a beautiful view in paradise and the bustling of the restaurant teeming with people watching opportunities including some adings coming around selling home-made pastillas de leche, there is just so much to distract while you wait the some times 20-30 minutes for your food.

Despite this, the service was good and the waitress was friendly. Although, the food was a hit or miss. I ordered the calamari and buttered mussels. They tasted great, but the butter sauce was strong. Sometimes the butter was an overwhelming flavor. While my partner and I enjoyed the mussels, my cousin was not fond of the butter on crab. The crab had mixed reviews from my party as my sister thought the crab was okay. My partner also ordered the garlic rice which paired well with the buttered mussels. And for drinks, we had a mango smoothie. So far, I enjoyed a mango smoothie from here the most. The texture was smooth and it wasn't too sweet. Rice noodles were cooked perfectly and had some nice pepper flavor with veggies, pork and shrimp. The Pork Adobo and Pork Sinigang both had pieces of meat with way too much fat in it. Adobo had good sauce and potatoes, which was actually good, given that adobo usually doesn't have potato. Sinigang also had a nice broth, but was a little light on the sour flavor that sinigang is known for. I did like how much eggplant that you get with it though. Kyla's Cocina is a fine place if you're already on Nacpan Beach and don't want to leave the area for food. You can't beat the location! The experience of just dining out on the beach, steps away from the water was nice. But food was not something I'd crave again.

Since I missed Filipino food so much, we ordered my favorite: Sizzling Pork Sisig which didn't disappoint! Flavours and textures were spot on. We also ordered their grilled chicken -- it was really tasty and juicy, grilled really well and it was well seasoned. Enjoyed the inasal style veggies too, a perfect side to the meats that we had. Loved the different condiments they have on the side of each table -- different dipping sauces and thai pepper. We ordered two desserts: halo-halo and turon with dulce de leche. The halohalo was lovely and apt for the humid weather but the turon was a bit of a let down, it was too soggy and too oily, too bad coz it would've been great. The grilled chicken was good, but the portion was not enough for two people, and the pork belly had way too many fatty pieces, so didn't eat much of the pork one. It was shame, too, since the pork had great flavor. Eggplant salad was very good and liked that it was included. And it was actually a relief that we ordered the Pancit Canton on the side to fill up on, which was a good dish with lots of calamansi flavor! The mackarel was a bit burnt which was disappointing and the adobo calamari chewy. The sinigang was pretty good however. Service was very slow and the restaurant sticky. The bathrooms were squalid and had no handsoap at all (it didn't even look like they ran out...just like it never existed) which only made the whole experience worse. This is one of the most popular spots in El Nido Town which makes me question everyone's travelling preferences. So glad this was a quick visit and we ended up staying in Sibaltan instead!

Pineapple Express: On paper, this sounded pretty good. But in reality, we were half joking and half worried, that if we were to get food poisoning from anything, it would be this. The texture and taste of the fish was like something that's been sitting out for too long. Grilled Cabbage with Miso: I didn't think grilling vegetables could be messed up but this was hard to eat. It was like the cabbage wasn't thoroughly cooked and the miso flavor was very surface-level. So each bite, you'd just taste some bland cabbage with barely any miso. We were at least hoping for that chargrilled taste but there was none of that. Crab Fat Ravioli: Now this was pretty good and I was cleaning the plate. But I personally like all those crab guts and the bitterness that comes with it. The ravioli itself is just crab meat but with the sauce, you're truly tasting what an entire crab would taste like. Pulpo Adobo: For the price, it's kind of small since you only get one tentacle but it's very tender. This is one of their Filipino-inspired seafood dish and the adobo sauce is actually with squid ink! This was well done and I was also cleaning the plate at the end. We decided to eat family-style and with everything split, our experience with the good wasn't enough to save the bad. We also ordered some of their alcoholic drinks with pandan but it tasted really weird. Moreover, the prices are unusually high for El Nido. For an island like Palawan it would be much more difficult to get the ingredients sourced than for example any restaurant in the Manila Metro area but viewing the local (tourists) public quite understandable. Which ones stood out? For me the crab bisque, emperor fish and of course that beautiful chocolate dessert. And the margaritas! Perfect. Bummer on the ravioli being very already dente, 20, maybe 30 seconds more cooking time would have created a great result, although the filling was nice. What else, wellington was OK but we would have been happy with a more local beef rendition. The restaurant itself is really cosy and has a welcoming atmosphere and the staff is fantastic. But I could say that about 8 out of 10 places in the Philippines. Recommended? I'd love to come back for something that has Palawan written on it a bit more but as said the restaurant and also the town needs to cater to the public to survive. All in all very memorable for staff, margaritas and dessert and a great way to start 2025.
