Great portion sizes, beer selection, dog friendly patio. Fish and chips not greasy at all

This is definitely one of those places I'll always come back to whenever I'm in Lake Tahoe! The food was sooo good and tasted incredibly fresh. There's even a slight view of the lake, and it's only about a five-minute walk from the water. There's plenty of parking and both indoor and outdoor seating. We had actually gone fishing with Tahoe Sport Fishing the day before and caught our own fish. We regretted not bringing it in because they can cook your fresh catch for you! Next time, we're definitely doing that. I ordered the fish and chips, and they were SO good honestly some of the best I've had. Definitely adding this place to our must-visit list every time we're in Tahoe! read more

MacDuff's Pub on Fremont, the kind of spot you find by accident and go back to every time you're in Tahoe after that. French onion soup alone is worth the trip, generous portion, good cheese pull, served in a bowl that means business. Fish and chips were light battered and fried correctly, one order was more than enough for two. Truffle mac with crispy breadcrumb top was the other standout, ordered it as a side and ended up basically making it the main. Scottish ale on draft was the right beer for all of it. We came back here again because of our wonderful experience last time. It was super busy this time and parties of 5-7 kept arriving. I ordered a cheeseburger medium rare, and it looked delicious. When I started eating it, pieces of it were falling apart because it was so overcooked. I let them know how dry it was and asked so send it back (not to remake) they did, and they also took it off our bill, which I really appreciated. I was done with my soda maybe 10mns after getting it, but never got a refill. Like I said though, it was really busy. We also ordered wings, round break stick, cheese pizza, and a pepperoni pizza. Everything else was so good. They saw my sons were a little bit of a handful and offered a coloring book. I liked that they have color pencils rather than crayons. Overall, its still worth another visit. We will be back again tomorrow after we go fishing because we really enjoy the environment and service here. read more

So, one night we went bowling and when we were leaving, this place was lit up, music and lots of people eating. So we said, we need to come back for dinner. Our last night in So. Lake Tahoe, we came to Mac Duffs. We sat inside for a little cooler and comfort. MacDuffs a Scottish Pub with beautiful Kilts framed on the walls. The food passing by was so enticing that our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. Food was great, quick service too. We will definitely come back. Our table ordered, burgers which were at least 6 inches tall served with tons of seasoned fries. Two other dishes ordered were the Cottage Pies one with beef and the other a Sheppards Pie with Lamb. Both plates were cleaned, aka nothing left. My plate was the Reuben. Man that was so delicious. Thick slices of Corn-beef and all its fixings included melted cheese. Never had a Reuben with Melted Cheese. The fries were overwhelming, but I savored a few. Oh and not to mentioned we all shared the Roasted Beet Salad. That was amazing, served with goat cheese, pickled red onions, arugula, sugar roasted walnuts, and mandarin oranges. Everything was well prepared. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place! The service was stellar! It was busy on a Friday night but the wait for a table was minimal. Every person in here is here to serve and it was refreshing to witness what a small but great team can accomplish. They were all so attentive. I love that you can see the cooks on your way in and can offer praise and thanks to them on your way out. The meals were delicious. The calamari and cocktail sauce were so good. All the food was spectacular from the wood fired pizza to the stew. The stew was flavorful as was the Shepard's pie. The ground lamb was perfectly seasoned in the pie. Really want to give this a 4.5. Had a great lunch here this week. We were able to sit outside and service was great. We were there a little late so I think we were the only diners there. We were in a group of 7 and had some tasty apps - the onion rings were good - Maui onions - but just a little undercooked batter. We had the shepherds pie, salad, corned beef cabbage, wedge salad, clam chowder, and veggie burger. We didn't live the veggie burger but super happy with everything else. Portions are big. Went tonight as a "redemption opportunity," haven't been in years (7 years!) since our last visit was pretty bad, actually, very bad (extremely poor service and inedible food -raw cabbage!) Pros- tonight's service was quite good. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The French onion soup was as good as I remembered. Our cocktails also went down quite nicely! Cons- outside of drinks and soup, everything else was meh to bad. We ordered fish and chips, the fish was wet, like when you take a frozen piece of fish and you don't pat it down well to dry. The wetness stays, even after cooking. The fries also became soggy too, since the fish was placed right on top. Even with these issues, I would say the dish was "meh." What bummed me out more was the bread pudding. It was a dish we used to love to order... I took two bites and was done. The texture of the bread wasn't good. It also used to come out pipping hot, it came out warm to slightly hot. And lastly, they ran out of vanilla ice cream and substituted with salted caramel, but didn't elect to tell us beforehand. I'm not a salted caramel ice cream person, I think it's too sweet...didn't eat any ice cream (and I love ice cream!) , so sadly, dessert was a total bust for me! Another con... the carpet on the stairs is in need of some major cleaning (or replacement!) and the restrooms also have a very strong mildew smell... not pleasant, especially before eating. So while I'm glad to see service has improved, we will definitely not be going back again... read more

I really did not feel like going somewhere fancy like I usually do in Tahoe. After searching around a bit I decided to come here given the large food menu and the decent cocktail selection based on the menu online. I am so glad I did and will be adding this to my rotation. I got lucky since they still had st pattys specials. I love scotch eggs and a good potato leek soup. Everyone was super attentive and friendly and they checked in on me regularly. I've never been a big pub person but they do it well with lots of spaces. I managed to get a table by the window so it was a smidge more quiet. The place was pretty packed by 7. I can't believe I've skipped this spot so many times. Sometimes your girl just needs to put away her champagne and touch some grass lol. I enjoyed it so much I came can the next day. I'm a creature of habit and I love good food so this will be part of my rotation. So glad I ventured out! The drinks are strong and heavy with a pretty good draft selection as well. Potato leek soup: so good I ordered it 2 days in a row. Asked for no sour cream dollop the second time. Scotch eggs: not easy to find and my goodness so delicious. The only time a scotch egg is bad is if the egg is overcooked. Not here! Calamari: i juicy and tender chunky pieces mmmmmm. Reminds me of the calamari in Australia. Cottage pie: didn't do the shepherds pie since I generally don't eat lamb. Pretty much the same with cheese on top. I do want to take my part Irish hubby here since I've never had shepherds pie made with lamb, even in Australia it was made with beef. The only dessert option is bread pudding so I skipped. But I will try it on a day I'm not too stuffed, which might be pretty hard with the portion sizes! Yummy food that's more than abundant in portion size, and a big enough variety to suit most palates. Loved the fish and chips here. The portion was huge and honestly such good value. We also tried a pizza and it was big enough that we had leftovers, which is always a plus. The interior is really cozy with a great vibe overall. Even the bathroom was surprisingly cool, which says a lot about the attention to detail. Overall just a really solid, comfortable spot. Dropped in for dinner and a beer our first night visiting good friends in SLT. Ended up here and weren't disappointed! Great beer selection- ordered Tennant's Alger and Pliny! I ate the fish and chips and others got the burgers and Shepard pies. Everyone enjoyed their dinners and we spend a while talking and eating. Ok... let's break this down into my favorites 1) clam chowder- overall just great flavor and good taste 2) steak stew- big portion good quality steak, deep flavor 3) chicken pot pie- classic taste, flaky bread on top, just perfect combination and delicious 4) French onion- my girlfriend loved it, but not usually my favorite dish with the flavor pallet. Our favorite spot in town! Spent 3 days on a family fishing trip and came here twice on the trip. All the food was soooo good and the service was friendly and felt like welcoming from all the staff. We caught some fish and dropped it off around 3pm and came back around 6pm and they had it made 3 ways! We loved how they cooked the fish and made it so easy for us to eat our catches! We will surely do this again next time we are in town and recommend to anyone who wants their fish cooked for them. All their food on their menu was good; chicken pot pie, shepherd pie, pizza, spaghetti, sandwiches, chilli, clam chowder, beets salad, and they even have Guinness on tap!! Went back bc we loved it so much last year. The ambiance is cozy casual pub that is clean and organized. The service is still as stellar with the 'every table is my table' philosophy. The food and drinks, however, were a little bit of a let down. -Margarita: 3/5. Didn't taste the tequila and was too tart. -Paloma: 5/5. Still great with the fresh grapefruit. -Calamari: 6/5. Still outstanding. HUGE portion of sliced calamari steak perfectly cooked with a horseradish forward cocktail sauce (love) and tartar sauce. So big was our shared appetizer AND my entree. -Classic Burger: 4/5. Sadly the burger was overcooked this time and so was dry. -Home-cut Fries: 7/5. OMG. These fries are outstanding and truly addictive. I will go back just to get these and make sure I can take the extras home bc again the portion is HUGE! Macduffs is rated high for a reason. A must visit when coming to Lake Tahoe. They have a great outside seating area which also has an outdoor high top seat bar out the back which also includes a TV with sports regularly playing on it. The food is definitely filling, and amazing. A lot of dishes are shareable so everyone can have a taste of many of their entrees as well if you come in a big group; OR you can have a LOT of something you love :0). Service here is good but mind you it does get hectic so sometimes you gotta be patient. I try to ask for everything I need all at once to ensure I don't have trouble enjoying my food. I just love how dog friendly most of the restaurants here are but I especially love MacDuff cause they also have good food. read more

I found MacDuff's Pub on Yelp and went there based on the good reviews and pics. We came for a late breakfast/brunch and got a nice table on the patio with a small view of the lake. Service was friendly, easygoing, and helpful. We ordered the French Onion Soup ($12), Shepard's Pie ($27), and Fish and Chips ($28). The French Onion Soup was good, but a little too salty for me. The Shepard's Pie came with fresh ground lamb, carrots, onions, peas, and celery with gravy, and topped with mashed potatoes and green onions. It was delicious! Everyone liked it. The Fish and Chips were good. The fish was crispy and really tasty with the homemade tartar sauce provided. The "chips" or fries were okay. I liked the simple small side of peas with the meal. We had a really good meal at MacDuff's. The Scottish pub decor inside was fun to look at. The service was good and food was great. read more

MacDuff's continues to reign supreme as my favorite restaurant in South Lake Tahoe. Service is as friendly and helpful as ever and as I try more menu items, it adds to the list of expertly crafted salads, soups, appetizers, burgers, pasta and pin favorites. Thankfully, a lot of them come with their amazing, fresh house-made fries which are a perfect size in between shoestring and restaurant size. I could eat a pound of them, and it seems like that's how generous they are with them. Came here for Mother's Day. Food and service is great! Kind of tucked away on a side street but it's right across the street from the lake. Interior def looks and feels like an old school Irish pub. I have to rave about the Mac n Cheese though. It is some of the best I've ever had w cheese that pulls for miles with amazing flavor. I don't really understand the 4.4-star rating. The food was pretty average overall. The chili came out cold and tasted canned, the pepperoni pizza was decent but the cheese was rubbery, and my friend's fish and chips were very bland. The service was friendly and the ambiance was nice, but our waters weren't refilled until we asked. Not a terrible experience, but definitely not a place I'd go out of my way to visit again. Would give 0 stars if I could. My review is solely based on poor customer service, I didn't even get a chance to eat there. Their online presence indicates wildly incorrect hours of operation. When we arrived during "open hours", we walked right in as the doors were wide open and patrons were inside. We were told they were closed and we had to leave. When we suggested they update their business hours online, the waitress rudely accused us of having an attitude and continued to pester us saying she's not the owner and it's not her business. Such a poor experience... not planning on going back to try the food. read more

We loved the decor! We had great service! And the food was wonderful. Two of our group had Shepherds Pie which they loved! And two of us had the Guinness Stew. My friend had hers in a bread bowl and I had mine with a ring of bread around it instead of in a bread bowl. The meat was so tender and the stew was delicious. We had the stew in Ireland and enjoyed it so much, this was as good as we remembered it from our Ireland trip. We shared a warm bread pudding with ice cream and warm caramel/bourbon sauce. Was here today for the first time. I can tell it's an Irish pub. One of the ladies had the accent. I'd give an overall score of 7.5 out of 10. Their batter for their onion rings and fish and chips was thin and flaky. Not the kind Im familiar with having worked in England for so many years. I wish they'd follow the correct batter and it would be perfect. Salads!! I got the Drop the Beet kind and it was swimming with beets. Dressing was perfectly done. I love my goat cheese but I didn't get enough of it. Because of the prevailing sweetness of the salad, a gorgonzola blue cheese would have been an excellent choice over the goat variety. Serving sizes!! Plenty. They did not hold back. The chicken pot pie was rather dainty and the pie was not the typical pie crust we grew up knowing. It was rather flaky and thin, just like the batter for the rest of their menu. The potpies definitely need some overhauling. That's it so far. Place!! To start off, a majority of the food was great! - Although, my friend ordered the margherita pizza and it was extremely cold and bland. The mozzarella just fell off the pizza and thudded on to the plate. -The shepherds pie was great, highly recommend if you're a fan of this particular dish. - The fish and chips was extremely fresh and was really tasty as well as the fries. - The shrimp and chips was on the same caliber as the fish and chips. My main reason for writing this review is because we came in a party of six. The pub was generally pretty busy, and there was a line with a few duos in front of us. When greeted at the front of the line, the hostess asked us "for how many" and we mentioned six. She asked us whether we'd like to sit inside or outside. We replied with outside and gave her a name and she mentioned it would be a minute until some tables cleared for her to put the tables together for us. We humbly accepted as we could tell they were busy. We waited outside for about 15-20 minutes after she mentioned it'd only being a couple minutes, this wasn't necessarily the issue because like I mentioned before they were getting pretty busy. Eventually she started putting some tables together and we knew it was our time to shine, all of a sudden she seated a group of 7 who had arrived after us. She sat them down and went inside and came back out 10 minutes later and looked at us as if she had never seen us before and asked us "And you guys are waiting for.... ?" Mind you, we are a group of mixed individuals in a pub full of one general population, which would be hard to forget, I'd assume. At this point we reminded her of the name and the situation and she said there would only be seating inside at this point. Before being seated we had felt disrespected to the point of wanting to eat somewhere else but we gave the benefit of the doubt. After receiving the food, we ate our food humbly and like mentioned before the majority of it was great. The pricing for what you're getting is generally reasonable aside from the pizza. Around $25 for a cold pizza that was not that great in flavor was kind of crazy though. Our server was a really nice lady with black hair and she served smiles all around. Even though majority of the dinner was spent with empty cups of water we still tipped as much as we were able to because we collectively understood how busy they were. I highly recommend this place in a small party, and highly advise to steer clear from the pizza. read more
