What an amazing experience we had this weekend at this campground! We visited during Father's Day weekend, which also happens to be bear mating season, so just know, you will see bears. From what we heard, bear sightings are common throughout the season. This is an off-grid campground, although there are water pumps in some areas and plenty of pit toilets throughout the campground. Park Rangers drive through every couple of hours until around 9 PM. The location is absolutely beautiful, check-in was easy, and firewood was available for $7 per bundle. Each campsite comes with its own fire ring. We stayed at site #38 and had gorgeous views. It was shady, peaceful, and in a great location. We also noticed that sites #11 and #12 looked very nice. We didn't get a chance to explore the entire park because we mainly wanted to relax, but you can easily walk the campground roads and explore the different camping areas. Around our site there was plenty of space for kids to play, and site #42 looked like it had a whole area to itself. We will definitely be coming back! Don't forget your bear spray. At night, especially the first night, the sounds of nature made it feel like you were in the middle of a jungle! The second night was much quieter. Highly recommended for anyone looking to unplug, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. read more

This is a beautiful state park with 2300 acres of land. Parking is free. There are 10 miles of hiking trails, including the Macedonia Ridge Trail, 51 campsites, and you can fish. Sone of the trails get you to views of the Catskills and Taconic mountains. There are a lot of streams, and lots of places for grills and cooking. The land once belonged to the Scatacook Tribe. read more

Had the pleasure of staying at site 48 for my first camping experience! I can only speak of the site and the hiking trails. Site 48: There are lots and lots and lots of bugs. You will find flies of all shapes and sizes, mosquitoes, and spiders. This part isn't fun. But it's nature and it's expected. Make sure you load up on your bug spray. Other than that, you're given a fire ring, picnic table, and a pretty large space to back your car in so it's out of the road. The site is more or less secluded if you parked your car in the entrance. It's not fully shaded like it says online though. The latrine is suuuuper close by and so is the water spout. Definitely recommend this spot and will for sure be coming back to it. The trails: we hiked blue trail and it wasn't terrible but was totally not what I expected! There's tons of inclines and lots of climbing. If you're a hiking junky, you'll like it. If you're a first timer, I don't really recommend. And if you're a casual walker/hiker, you can give it a try but I personally don't think it's worth it. There are some slippery and rocky slopes. Other than that, I still enjoyed it but hear me out when I say it's not for the casual walkers!! The campground and park is overall well kept. The latrines don't smell awful in the day because of it's solar panel ventilation systems. Beware of it when the sun goes down. The water is safe to cook and drink. The staff maintaining the area is more or less nice. They have a very strict no alcohol and pets policy so don't let them catch you with either! And I repeat again DO NOT FORGET YOUR BUG SPRAY. read more

Macedonia Brook State Park is a gorgeous park in the northwest(ish) corner of Connecticut. This part of CT is definitely a little more rugged, and there's a lot of interesting hiking trails here. Macedonia has that, as well as camping and fishing. The Saturday we visited was pretty quiet in the morning, but as the day went on, it became pretty busy with numerous hikers. We did an out and back hike on the orange/white trail up to Cobble Mountain, which has spectacular views. The trail is well blazed and pretty well cut, with a couple of near-rock scramble areas, especially near the junction with the blue trail. I have heard that the blue trail has even more rock scramble sections, and we had our pup with us, so we didn't go that way. Afterwards, we had a nice picnic at one of the picnic tables near the camp office, they were nicely shaded and had a view of Macedonia Brook. All in all, an excellent place for a moderate to challenging hike! read more

I loved visiting this park. While many of the trails are over broken ground, they are well-marked at all points and I never lost my place. As with many parks, some of the trails are more challenging than others - I would recommend speaking to the staff at the park office about the different options before setting off or making sure that you can read and pay attention to the contour map! I made the mistake of picking a set of trails without doing this and had a much harder time than I thought - luckily I had brought extra water along. read more

Had the pleasure of visiting this park over the weekend for a few hour hike. It looks mostly to be catered toward campers as the campsites are quite spacious and each camp area has its own distinct feel. Surprisingly this place does not charge entree fees unlike most of the other state parks I've been to. We walked mostly on the blue trail and for the most part they are pretty clearly marked but there were some strenuous parts of the climb that I thought could use better clearing. My favorite part was the open field in one of the campsites where we got to enjoy the sun beaming down on us on a cold autumn day. No cell signal inside the park for me (ATT) as expected so definitely download their hiking maps beforehand to be prepared, the map they have at the camp office is bit hard to read in my opinion. The picnic locations are all around the camp office and Keeler road that goes through the park, we went during off camp season (April 19- Oct 1) which meant the park wasn't crowded at all I would expect it's busiest around July 4th like most of the state parks I've had the experience been to. Overall its a great place for camps I think and we definitely would be coming back in the future to give their campsites a try. read more

Nice park and close to Kent downtown if you need anything. We stayed at #4. It was secluded and close to the brook but very very buggy. Driving down into the site was a little tricky but not bad. We hiked the orange trail which was easy to moderate I would say. The only complaint is that the walking trails should have been wider and there was lots of overgrown grass which means a tick risk so be sure to wear long pants and check yourself afterwards. Facilities are very basic, limited water spigots and only an outhouse at each site. There is a shower at the welcome center in kent near the library which has a small changing room and you can shower ($2 in quarters gets you 4 min of hot water. Overall a nice place to go and rightfully popular so reserve early, we reserved Memorial Day weekend back in February. read more

Macedonia Brook stake park has hiking trails, car camping locations and beautiful day picnic locations. It's a beautiful place to spend a few days. The camp sites are largely on big grassy sites, situated in pairs or well enough away from each other as compared to most campgrounds I've been to. So much room! Each site includes a fire pit and picnic table. Latrines are places for every 5-7 sites. 3 tents per site, 2 cars. Must use local firewood and no hammocks or backcountry camping. Runs alongside the AT I would highly recommend this campground! We had #35 and it was lovely for a 3 night trip for 6 people. read more

Just went here for the first time this past weekend; growing up in Northwestern Connecticut, if we drove south, Kent Falls was always the destination. Macadonia was waaaay too far out of the way. ("What? You have to drive PAST Kent School? Where does that even GO?") However, as one friend decided to hold a mutual friend's surprise 30th birthday party in the pavilion on site, I spent a Saturday afternoon doing an old past time: maneuvering along one lane dirt roads while self-involved New Yorkers barrel down at 40 MPH, pushing me dangerously close to the edge of the road...and the brook...with little regard for me. (Gross generalization? I'm just saying exactly what happened to me three times in five minutes, and, oh, what happened to me on local dirt roads for the first 24 years of my life. Ha!) Overall, the grounds are lovely, the brook is babbling, the woods are woodsy, and the pavilion is great if you can beat someone to it. ($200+ just to reserve? Hedge your bets and just go, hoping it is reservation-free when you do.) Oh, and don't expect a lick of cell phone service. You are in the wilderness, friends. Make your phone calls, send your texts, and make your preemptive social media check-ins in the center of Kent. read more

Love this place, came here about 15 years ago, and I came back again recently. Good hiking and nice camp spots bunched up, but with spaces between areas. Nice babbling brook, good hiking trails, and friendly enough park rangers. It was cool, not too hot. Insects were not too horrible with skeeter spray on. We were there 4th of July weekend, and there were many loud people here also. I'm from New York City, so I love people from all over, but when I'm camping outside the city I don't so much like loud people. Maybe it was exuberance, and I'm happy for them to be excited. Maybe there are no campgrounds that are quiet on a busy weekend. Alcohol is prohibited, which is good, and they had rules about how late the noise can be. So in a way, it was an orderly campground. The noise wasn't that bad. They had their weird high tech latrine with a bizarre humming and solar panels. The firewood was $4, and it was $6 at Annie Bananie in Kent. I like it that it's close to Kent Falls and we found a lovely place to pick fruit: Ellsworth Hill Orchard & Berry Farm--call ahead to see if anything is in season. read more

We have been to this State park about a dozen times and we love it more and more every time we come here. Mostly for camping. We live in NYC and although there are closer campsite to us We find it that the beauty and peaceful environment of this place is what keeps us coming back. We have our Favorite spots to camp in of course and we have climbed their highest summit which is about 1000 feet a few times. They have other less challenging trails you can hike but my wife likes that one the best. Book early because this place packs out weeks in advance. read more

I camped overnight at Macedonia Brook with my 10 year old son, his friend and his dad. We had a terrific time. Courtney, the ranger, was very helpful and nice. She recommended a particular campsite based on what we were looking for and it was perfect. The park itself is beautiful. In the brook, we saw plenty of small fish and the kids even caught a few crayfish (and safely returned them to the brook). We hiked the blue trail for about 3 miles and it was perfect. Challenging enough for 10 year olds and adults. Took an hour. By then we were all ready for dinner and a campfire. Great experience, would definitely go back. One thing I forgot to mention: there were a LOT of bugs. Definitely load up on bug spray. read more

I had a great time camping with my family on labor day weekend. The park is big, offers many spacious camp sites, but you need to take a good look at the map because some sites are very cramped together. i stayed on site 19, it was not the best site but we still had a wonderful time. the bathroom was very clean and surprisingly at times even smelled pretty good ;) The web site says no swimming but we took a good swim in the river, it wasn't even that cold after a while. anyways i tried to hike the blue trail but stay away if you have children because it is a very long mountain hike. Forget about fishing, we tried and tried but did not find one tiny fish in the river. I would recommend this place anytime. read more

This park is good for picnic and camping. Since I don't do any camping, I cannot comment on the camping aspect of this park. But, other reviewers have covered it. We just had a picnic day here with other nearby places included in a day. Due to it's proximity to Kent Falls, Housatonic Meadows state park and other parks, the visit to this park will be fruitful. Nice place for a good picnic with family and friends. read more

Had no idea what to expect coming in when I went earlier this summer, left really happy. Lots of shady wooded trails along a brook, and some that took you up to sunny vistas at a mountain summit. Didn't camp, but will definitely have to next time, because the sites looked like some of the best I've seen. Grassy areas that were spaced out, and didn't seem very crowded on a summer Saturday. read more

Nice pretty park, free to park and hike, not many other people there. We tried to hike the blue trail counterclockwise, to go up the rock scramble instead of down, but we were really tired after we got to the peak and switched to the white trail, but then lost the white trail, maybe needs more markers? It was very nice except for the millions of bugs flying into our eyes and noses the entire time. I don't mean like a bug flew in my nose once; I mean like I was constantly waving a branch in front of my face like a windshield wiper to try to minimize the number of times I had to dig bugs out of my eyes or blow them out of my nose. Bring bug spray and maybe a flamethrower. read more

My husband called today to ask about availability. He asked "Im calling to see if any sites are available for Monday" the man said " ok" then my husband asked about site 30 and the man immediately said "all sites are booked" and sort of yelled at him. and my husband said " ok.." and the man interrupted him and said rudely "ALL SITES ARE BOOKED". The rudeness instantly made us want to choose another place to camp. We then researched further reviews and found that they will sneak up on you at midnight to see if you have alcohol at your site. Its such a beautiful place. Its really too bad its run by rude obnoxious people who invade privacy. Maybe time for a change? Maybe someone who cares more about nature and less about what the respectable campers are doing at midnight on their own private paid time? read more
