Not too strenuous, because the guides stopped often to point out particular ships and tell more stories about the history of how they came to be there. The kayaks and other equipment were in excellent shape, and the tour was very well organized. We would recommend this tour to anyone.

Obviously, if you have a boat and can get it to this remote location, you don't need the tour. But for me, I've had it on my to-do list for a long time, I traveled a long way to get to the tour, and it was worth it. There was a presentation before getting on the boats, which I thought was detailed and well-handled. The presence of a fleet of shipwrecks requires some explanation. Getting into the water didn't take all that long. The amount of time on the water was as long as or slightly longer than what we booked, and this gave enough time to pretty thoroughly round the bay. The tide was quite high when I visited so the wrecks were mostly underwater, but there were still plenty of sights to be seen. Having seen them from land and memorialized them in photographs, the experience from water is much better. And of course, the shipwrecks now are simply a place for wildlife to live, and the visit an excuse to get out on a part of the river where it turns estuarine. This trip is not a huge distance from DC, but it is a world away.

Just bought a paddleboard and was searching for places closest to my house. I knew about this one,…read morebut didn't initially know that I had to have a season pass to the nova Parks and this marina was more expensive on top of the regular annual pass. It cost around $150. And you can't get in to this marina without a key. The marina is great for kayak, canoe, paddleboard, not big boats. It's buggy there. No walking trails that I saw. Of the two times I've launched my paddleboard, one time was nice, the other time the current was fast enough that it kept spinning my paddleboard around, so I couldn't get anywhere. But I think it's probably usually calmer than that. There are no concessions or bathrooms. And that's the reason I won't get a pass next year.

This is lovely reservoir park along River Road (northwest of downtown Fredericksburg, but on the…read moresouth bank of the Rappahanock River). It's only a 7 minute drive from the Wegmans in the Carl D. Silver Parkway megaplex. As you enter on the left side, continue past the mini-parking lot along a gravel road. At the end, there's a larger parking lot (upper lot) and the smaller parking area (lower lot). On a Sunday morning in late September, it was calm and peaceful on the reservoir. On weekends from 12pm-5pm, the nature center is open for kids. This is a great place for boating (they have kayak and canoe rentals) and easy hiking. Not so ideal for running because the trails are narrow and full of tree branches (hazardous if you're not watching your step). A river path is a good option for walking (but not ideal for jogging). Across River Road at the "bottom of the hill", there's a public boat ramp that's worth a quick peek for a view of the river. At the far left, walk toward the open space and path along the river. After a short walk of 200 feet, you'll get a clear view of how rocky and shallow the river is - as well as bowls in the ground which may been cannon redouts (used during the Civil War). It's amazing to see both the Union and Confederate forces built cannon redoubts on both sides to prevent people from crossing the river at this shallow and relatively calm area. Enjoy!

Bonnie was super helpful when I called to inquire about trying this out, recommending a time slot with no other appointments so there would be less distractions. The staff who met us there were super friendly and very good with my nervous guy. They had him wagging his tail happily within a minute! They were super calm and helpful with getting us into a kayak and then we were off! We paddled for about half an hr for this first time, and then the staff helped us back off of the water. The place is set up really well for nervous dogs. It's a quiet dock in the back of the marina, and you can just pull up and park on the gravel and walk down to the launch, so there's no need to coax your dog inside any unknown buildings. The marina is beautiful and I can't wait to go back and explore more. They do have a little shop as well where we finished our outing with a pup ice cream for my brave guy! We had a great time and we can't wait to go back!
