Great spot. Love the setup, looked like the staff had it all together. Only complaint is that staff was not wearing their masks. I Greatly appreciated them helping us get in to the kayaks, help us get on the water & safely back out on to the dock. But given how close staff has to get to customers to help, it'd be safer if they wore masks as well as the customers. Otherwise, I would give this 5 stars. Saw a lot of wildlife, beautiful flowers along the river, very safe water to paddle in, no wake. It was so peaceful. Kayaks were dry, well kept.

Great day on the water with Penguin Paddling. The staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating. This was a great way to to spend the day exploring the Occoquan River.

What a fantastic company and experience! They have plenty of paddle boards, kayaks, and PFDs so reservations aren't necessary! Even if you see a line, don't fret, it moves so quickly as the very capable staff are helping folks on and off the water safely. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and kind. I felt at home from my very first rental. They have a range of rental options from hourly to daily to punch passes or season passes! I highly recommend stopping by for a great paddle experience!

Patrick was there to open on time in the morning, since this was my first visit to the Occoquan location and I've had some mishaps with kayaking in the past, I asked several questions about directions and if he had any recommendations on which way to go during the time that we had to spend on the water, including any areas to avoid etc. He was very pleasant and helpful with his guidance. He told me which way the Potomac was (towards the right side if looking off the pier towards the water) and that there would be a little water fall to look at if we went towards the left...but that there really wasn't too far to go at all if we went towards the left because there were small rapids we wouldn't be able to get past. Overall..it was a gorgeous day to be out on the water, a nice time overall, will definitely return. It's closer to home, and quieter than Georgetown. I think the season pass was $100 with 10 - 2 hour punches on a card.

A year after reflecting on our kayaking tour in DC, my boyfriend and I realized it was so awesome that we should have left a review way back then. Our guide was very knowledgeable about DC and informed us about all the essential landmarks. Having lived in the area most of my life I was able to take away not only a peaceful afternoon on the Potomac, but also some information I did not know before. Kayaking was something I had never tried before, but after this trip I would feel completely comfortable jumping into one. I was surprised how easy it was to learn, regardless of my fear of tipping over. Getting to the marina was easy and parking was free and easily accessible. Our guide was very friendly and hospitable, offering us snacks and water before launching out of Columbia Island Marina. The equipment itself appeared brand new and the life vests came in a variety of sizes. During the trip, he stopped us at great photo spots and offered to take pictures of us together. We went on this trip with my family (age range 18-52) as well and our guide was able keep the whole family together regardless of stamina and strength. I would love to do this again if in the area and would even be willing to pay full price. If you are familiar with the area, this is a great way to put a spin on the hum-drum touristy things to do. Definitely a repeat if you are in the area!

Came here with a group for kayaking. Only they ran out of kayaks before noon. So some of us had to…read morerent standup paddle boards instead. There is a slightly more expensive pricing for folks not residing in Fairfax, Loudon, Alexandria, or Arlington counties. But they don't really verify...so as long as you put down an address within those counties on your waiver, then you are good to go. See my pics for the pricing as of Aug 2023. The Sat I came, they seemed very short staffed with only two people managing the rental payments and forms and then another 2 manning all the boats/boards. So we pretty much ended up having to launch and bring back our vessels ourselves. They have very limited 2 person kayaks and they require kids under 12 to be in a boat with another adult so be prepared. In addition to kayaks they have jon boats and stand up paddle boards. You can bring your own vessel but there are launch prices. The lake is quite large so 1 hour is still not enough to explore its entirety even if you were powering through. The boat rental process is this: 1) Each person needs to fill out a waiver (just one page), you need to keep the yellow paper on you and return it when you come back. 2) Payments can be done per person or by group and they accept Apple Pay 3) Go down to the dock, hand them your form 4) They will tell you which vessel you can pick and hand you life vests and paddle(s) 5) Go have fun 6) Return the vessel 7) Bring back the yellow form to the rental house Not sure why we need to keep a piece of paper on us while out on the water. I've rented boats in many other places and all they needed was the vessel back. I guess to prevent theft...but they log the number assigned to the vessel on the form prior to you renting so...But at least there isn't an entrance fee to this park and there isn't really much else to do besides activities around the water front. There is a trail that leads to Bull Run, but there isn't say a playground, picnic area, or sports fields. Parking is pretty limited but you can park along the side of the road.

One of my dogs favorite hiking spots. The bike trails are good too, although this park is nestled…read moreway out of suburban NOVA areas like FFX.

Even with my paddleboard exploding when inflating, it was a wonderful trip. The park entrance is fee-free, and there is plenty of parking just a few feet away from kayak launches, a small dock with rental kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards. Cramming myself and my friend into our single remaining inflatable kayak worked out great. The Potomac has a lazy flow at the fastest, and there is a large area with little movement that makes lazy drifting easy and perfect for kids and those looking for more relaxation than paddling. Absolutely great spot to go after work or with the family on weekends!

I am writing for three reasons. I have revised this review, because my description of the parking was only partly accurate. That is due to my stupidity, looking primarily in the summer -- I was able to perceive more clearly when the leaves were off the trees, in the winter. I just came back from the venue moments ago. So I can be much more clear. First, there are two parking lots. There is a tiny one right there. I would not count on it. The one time, I flew on a redeye flight just as the pandemic was ending, to run a half marathon. I am not in the shape needed to do that anymore. I arrived maybe 6am. That meant I could find a space and take a quick nap. But fifty feet down the dirt road is a tunnel. It is so cramped you might not believe your car will fit. But that is what it is for. A sedan will do fine; an oversize SUV, maybe not. It's also two way with room for only one car width. This passage leads across the canal. There is a much bigger parking lot. I have had good luck. I would bet it fills up on busy days later in the morning, but in the 7am range it's half empty. Usually, I Uber to this destination or I park in the neighborhood, and walk the remaining half mile. Second, the turn into the parking lot is tight. I cannot describe it. It'd be easier to draw a diagram. It's more than two roads meeting; the angles also are oblique. People don't understand how the intersection works. That is aggravating. I try not to be judgmental. Probably there will be an accident sometime, and that will lead to reform. My wife refuses to drive down here. The narrowness of the sidewalk renders it dangerous for pedestrians. Please, be careful. Third, they have restrooms. They are kept clean. This is a huge boon. I am always on the lookout for public restrooms of high quality. I share for the benefit of all.

I have to tell you that learning to sail was an excellent decision because I actually learned to sail a 19 foot flying scot independently! My lessons consisted of four 2.5 hour morning sailing lessons out on the Potomac, Monday through Thursday. The sailing school also offers adult weeknight and weekend classes and different kids camps. The instructors split my class up into groups of two or three, went over some of the materials and then out onto the water we went to learn how to rig the boat and raise the sails. My instructor Ray was awesome, he taught us what we needed to know and even pushed us to run docking drills by ourselves on the last day of classes. Yes, at times the lessons were super challenging and nerve wracking, but once you get some practice time in, you'll get the hang of it. It's worth it to learn how to sail. I myself now find sailing enjoyable and ridiculously relaxing. Everyone I have encountered at the marina either teaching lessons, working in the office or out on the dock have been super friendly and helpful. They give you a free week of practice sails after your lesson so that you feel totally comfortable sailing independently and the people at the dock give plenty of tips to help you continue to hone your beginner skills.
