This place is enjoyable, the food is consistent and the staff is kind. At times it takes long to be taken care of if you're picking up an order. As a dine in guest the service is a little faster and friendlier. Review your bill before paying because even as a table of 2, a "service fee" is added to the bill and when asked if that's considered gratuity they'll finagle their words to act as if it isn't. A friend and I visited here and unfortunately, we had a terrible experience. After being seated, we waited over 20 minutes and left before even placing our drink order. Despite telling the server we were ready to order, she ignored us while consistently checking on other tables. I couldn't help but feel that this was a subtle act of "preferential treatment" to say the least. I've eaten here multiple times, usually a spot around the way to grab a bite and the food is alright, so we left and went elsewhere. I was hesitant to leave this review but when I checked their yelp reviews, seems like this type of treatment is a common practice here. I'm spoiled because I know many great Colombian bakeries near me and this one was a big disappointment. Stumble upon this bakery while in the area and was so disappointed. Ordered a steak sandwich with fries. the steak was so hard that I couldn't bite into it at all. Ended up throwing it out. Had ordered a beef empanada and the filing was dry. Macondo has been my go to spot for empanadas for over 13 years. A few other Colombian places have opened up around and they're all really good but this place has the better empanadas. They have a huge selection of other baked goods and lunch specials. Would deff recommend coming here for a quick bite. read more

I can only rate based on my experience. I'm a regular by choice because the surrounding ones aren't as good as this one is. The staff are okay, not as friendly as you would expect but it's fine with me since I'm not as bubbly as most. However, the ladies have always been attentive and have gotten my order correct. On various occasions, I usually get carimañolas, empanadas, arepas choclo, or hot chocolate. I can't complain, they are delicious. Hot chocolate is consistently good and some days the hot chocolate is amazing!!!! The foods that I mentioned are typically ready by the time you order but the drinks may take while. I have been going here since I was a child. The food isn't bad and the price point is fine. However they always give you hot sauce and lemon for your food. This place opened when I was in high school. I remember how small it used to be. The main owner was always very sweet and pleasant...treated everyone with such care. We used to go after high school to hang out, eat empanadas, drink coffee, eat arepas with cheese, salchichon, chorizo. The food was always very fresh, even up to now everything is delicious! It was a rainy day and we had a craving for empanada and coffee. This part of Passaic has several South American restaurants bunched together on Main, and on impulse we wandered into Macondo. Pleasant little bakery that also serves savory Columbian specialties luncheonette style. This food is still a mystery to me, mostly because in many respects it is indistinguishable from the cuisine and dining style of many other Latin countries, except of course to the natives. Most folks know empanadas, and they do a decent one here stuffed with beef, chicken or potatoes (or some combination of these). They were fried to a nice crisp and flavorful on our visit, served with a spicy red sauce on the side, sorta like a sriracha. The chicharon was good too, if a bit chewy. We split a Fritanga Bandeja, a kind of Columbian National dish. This huge plate of mystery beef smothered in beans, rice, fried plantains with an egg on top was accompanied by Arepa (a cornmeal bread). The coffee was very good. It was a filling and flavorful meal and the tab was very modest. Could never eat this way regularly, but it was a pleasant escape to the land of Columbian comfort food. read more

My father went this morning for the famous "arepa e huevo". What a disgrace! The arepas were small in size and each had a little of egg inside. Furthermore, the patty was bland.
