Opened 6 years ago, Mama Ana's Empanadas is a family-owned restaurant specializing in empanadas located off of Union Blvd. Greeted by the staff upon arrival, the interior vibe was not only festive but cozy and casual with seating for 20 patrons. From the menu, one can choose up to 18 different kinds of empanadas, from classic beef or chicken to cheesesteak and Cuban; either have them baked or fried. They also offer Latin" bowls, salads, and sandwiches. We decided on the cheesesteak empanada and broccoli & cheese empanada, as well as the Chicharrones de Cerdo bowl, accompanied by rice and beans with a side of maduros (sweet plantain). The cheesesteak was tasty. The broccoli came with mozzarella, which was salty. The cheddar would have been better. The empanada dough was hot, flaky, and huge. Chicharrones de cerdo bowl was served piping hot and hit the spot. The pork wasn't hard but had great flavor and chew. The price was reasonable due to its size and portion. This is my one of my goto spots in Totowa, NJ. Empanadas were amazing. I recommend the PINK HOT Sauce, I'm pretty sure im addicted. The service has always been excellent. Saw the great reviews and decided to give this place a try. SUPER cute upon walking in. Love the ambiance. Sizeable dining area inside and tables outside as well for outdoor eating. I ordered both a fried and baked empanada to see which I liked better. Surprisingly I enjoyed the baked version more! I ordered one chicken and one beef. So the search was on and I can always count on Yelp to come in clutch when I'm not from the area. We ordered 5 different empanadas. I liked the Pastelon de Platano and Chicken Chimi the most. They were nicely sized, stuffed, and well seasoned. The crusts were flaky and not too heavy. The others enjoyed theirs and said it was the best empanadas they ever had. I think I'll be in heaven if somewhere down the line they had a crab or shrimp empanada. Shared a Cuban sandwich with a side of fries and tostones. Delicious and great. Quite authentic to me. Chicharrones de Cerdo was a winner for me. I was hesitate to get these at first because most places overly fry the pork belly to the point its too hard. Mama Ana's does it perfect though. Fried just right with a crunch and it melts in your mouth. I wish I ordered another platter to take home. For sure this establishment far exceeded my expectations. The place is clean. At the end of the our hike at Garret Mountain yesterday, my boyfriend and I had empanadas delivered through Door Dash. I got the buffalo chicken, cheese, and guava and cheese empanadas and a morir soñando. My boyfriend got buffalo chicken and pulled pork bbq empanadas and lemonade. The buffalo chicken empanadas were awesome and my cheese empanada and morir soñando were perfection. The empanadas here are a really good size and they were still warm when we got our order. However, I wasn't expecting the guava & cheese empanada to be made with mozzarella. As much as I love mozzarella, I was anticipating something more like a sweet, creamy cheese that would be typically be used in a pastry. I was a little disappointed. The lady at the counter asked if I wanted them fried or baked, so I decided to go with fried. I didn't eat in the restaurant, I took them home. They were packed in a cute little cardboard box. When the lady gave me my order, she also gave me two dipping sauces to try -- a green one and a pink one. I ended up not trying them, I'm not a big fan of dipping lol. The prices weren't bad at all. I think its like $3.50 for a basic empanada. Definitely worth the money. They were HUGE. I definitely could have just ordered one, They definitely stuff them, but it's not overwhelming. The BBQ pulled pork empanadas were extremely salty, didn't have the normal flavor is usually does and the grease was everywhere. The salt was so overwhelming, both were less than half eaten and thrown out, which never happens. The beef and cheese had no flavor at all. And the pastelon was so greasy and the meat flavorless that it wasn't edible. The steak bowl was eaten by a guest and she said it was good, so that had no complaints. Everytime I place a pick up order they don't start it until I get to the store. So it's pointless to order pick up. Another time they literally called me after I got home with the order to tell me they gave me the wrong order. I brought it back, no credit no extra side nothing for the waste of time they caused. just cold food and a nonchalant attitude about their errors. I love these empanadas. I personally prefer baked empanadas - healthier, not as much oil/grease, crisp but not over done. They have the option of both here, so really you can choose whatever ones you prefer. Prices are reasonable, about what I'd expect to pay for an empanada. On the day I went, it was about 5-6pm at night and they didn't have such a large selection in the window as far as baked empanadas go. I think they will make you fresh fried ones if you ask. I took whatever they had left, which was chicken and then a beef. Both were very pleasant - crust was soft but had a nice crisp to it. I really enjoyed the chimichurri and pink sauce that come with the empanadas - a nice touch. I didn't even have to ask for it! They just included it in my "to go" bag. Went here first time to try them out and got the following: Ground beef, Chicken, California, Bbq pulled pork, and the Apple Pie--all were delicious. With the exception of the ground beef and chicken (which were baked), the rest were fried to order. Also they gave me a 10% discount since it was my first visit (and definitely not my last!). Mamá Ana's Empanadas opens the door to our culinary adventures and it's the first of many future reviews. We have been following them since they began construction on what used to be an Italian Deli and have not been in until now because there are just too many places to eat! Haha. The location is a little weird. It's on a very trafficked road which makes it difficult to see unless you are really looking for it. Parking can also be a challenge because the ITALIAN Cafe next door gets pretty busy and the patrons take all the spots in the back lot. This place is spot on clean. You can see it right away when you walk in and you can smell it! The smells when you walk in are amazing! They definitely got our mouths watering. We ordered the following; - ground beef Empanada - ham and cheese Empanada - buffalo chicken Empanada - Chicharrones de cerdo bowl - Chicharrones de pollo bowl - Steak Latin bowl The bowls come with rice and beans or with a different side; We opted for French fries, Yuca and Fried plantain instead of beans, but it seems that it means you don't get rice at all. We suggest they leave the rice on and just reduce the amount of yuca,fries or plantains... it would make the dishes look fuller. The empanadas were on point. A little pricey, even though they are much bigger than usual but not that big to call for $4 The beef was a little insipid but we really enjoyed the buffalo chicken and the ham and cheese. The bowls were a bit underwhelming. Definitely needed the rice. The meats were perfectly seasoned! The steak is more like a shredded beef... kinda reminded us of a beef ropa vieja, and it's super juicy. The Chicharrones were the perfect fat-to-meat ratio. We tried their pink and green sauces. The green sauce was a little bland, and too liquidy. They also need some sort of hot sauce. Not sure if they have any but when we asked for sauces we were told they only had those two.
