Beware! They overcharged me for treatments back in January and I am due a refund of almost $500 after my insurance reimbursed them. Dr Mehran Taban performed a very complex vitrectomy after I suffered a severe vitreous hemorrhage. He was able to save my vision in my left eye and I'm forever grateful to him and his staff. I just want to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Taban and his team. They literally and figuratively saved my life today by ending a nearly nine-month panic spiral about my eyes. I'm 26 years old, and while that may seem young to some, retina specialists have been part of my life for a long time. My mom had a retinal detachment that blinded her in her left eye, and ever since then, my family has strongly encouraged me to have annual dilated exams with their retina specialists. One of those specialists told me I had drusen and a perifoveal pigment change in my left eye. Naturally, I panicked. Anyone who has ever Googled drusen or pigment changes knows exactly what comes up, namely pages and pages of terrifying material about dry AMD and geographic atrophy. I spent nine months panicking, overhauling my diet, taking lutein supplements, and Googling dry AMD almost every day. It was exhausting, and it completely took over my life. With the most thorough and advanced imaging I've ever had -- OCT, OCT-A, B-scan, and a detailed exam -- he confidently assured me that I have no macular degeneration, no drusen, and no pigment changes. I had the good fortune to have emergency eye surgery 3 weeks ago at the Macula Retina Vitreous Center, with Dr. Mehran Taban. I had been diagnosed the previous day with a Vitreous Hemorrhage, Detached Retina & Torn Retina. And had lost all vision in my left eye & faced the prospect of permanent blindness. I was very shaken, but found Dr. Taban's high degree of confidence & exacting professional manner very comforting. He is an absolute master of his craft, with an uncommon level of skill in bringing patients to the best possible outcome. He was able to return my left eye function to 20/24 vision, & give me back 90% of the sight I had previously lost. I met DR.MEHRAN TABAN around late oct 2024 or early nov.2024 at the Macula Retina Center at his clinic in the city of torrance. i was referred to him by my opthamologist DR. GONZALO CASIMIRO after developing Diabetis Retinopathy after having cataract surgery in march of 2024 .so when i met with DR.TABAN he pretty much explain too me that my right eye was bleeding because of Retina Detachtment And that was why for the last 8/9 months i had no vision in my right eye. DR.TABAN along with his wonderful staff and his assistant DR.JORDAN SUGARMAN worked fast on my eye with Leslie the coordinator of surgery set me right up for surgery first they treated me with shots too stop the bleeding in both eyes were treated. DR.TABAN was fixing the problem before it got worse in the left eye. so the day of my surgery nov 17 2024 my blood sugar and blood pressure were too high for DR.TABAN too go forward with the surgery he explain to me that i would have the same outcome because of my vitals .I was upset but he was right he told me too go home and get my vitals under control and then he will do my surgery. He prescribed me 4 different eye drops to help with the healing . Don't assume you're going to be in and out quickly. Visited three times and perpetually running significantly behind schedule. Definitely feel like a part of an assembly line once past the waiting room. On one hand yes they are efficient. On the other hand, very very impersonal. After passing through several steps and people and a secondary waiting room (sometimes more than one time), the doctor seems very knowledgeable but is all business, not much time for chit chat or getting to know you. So all in all did it get the job done and address my eye issues? Yes, and seems like they do a great job. Great experience otherwise? Meh. Very disappointed. I went to see this doctor because my regular doctor was out of town. I waited to see the doctor for 2 hours then he checked my eyes for 5 minutes AND he said that he didn't know what diagnosis was. Even though I told him and a nurse that this was my third time experience "cold sore". (When this virus affects the eye, it is called herpes zoster ophthalmicus. ... Herpes simplex type 1 is the same virus that causes cold sores on the lips and mouth. In the eye, it usually causes an infection of the cornea. This infection is called herpes simplex keratitis.) I suddenly went blind in my left eye and through Dr. T's expert diagnostic capability and surgical skill, he was able to repair my torn retina and give me my sight back. They manage this place very well. everything was executed in a timely manner however customer service can be a little better. I know people can have bad days, but if you work with the elderly you should have patience. One of the female workers answered with a snarky tone when my grandpa asked a question. First of all I was called in by a young lady and we went to a room and she ask me a question the same question that I had put in when I came in. And dilate my eyes. What I dont understand is the assistants doesn't have any charts in front of them, after doing all the test patients are ask to go to another room to waited for 30 min, then when I went in the examination room the dr told me my eyes was not diluted enough, so they had to put more solutions and have me wait for another 15min. I could not wait anymore I left because the drs office is like a circus it looks like an emergency room, the dr doesn't change his gloves the staff is just spraying his gloves god knows what it is. Too many young staff inexperienced. Dilation waiting room too many people waiting. It's a chaos. And also when I called the receptionist did not disclose that patient is expected to wait atleast 90min or more. Dr. Mehran Ron Taban is an absolute Saint. This past Labor day, I suddenly lost vision in my left eye from what seemed to be a retina detachment. I was experiencing all the symptoms like seeing floaters and flashes of light but like a fool, I decided to wait till the last minute. I went in to see my regular ophthalmologist Dr. John Mayer who confirmed the fact that this indeed was a retina detachment. Dr. Mayer proceeded to make 4 or 5 phone calls to any retina specialist who would be available on a holiday weekend to consult with me for treatment that same day. Dr. Taban was the only one willing to go out of their way to see me on a holiday. Not only did he drive more than a hour to come see me privately at his office in Torrance but agreed to go ahead with the emergency surgery later that evening! It's been a week since the surgery. The surgery went on without a hitch and today in his office, Dr. Taban assured me that everything is going as planned and that my surgery is looking good. I've have high hopes that I will make a full recovery just based on how knowledgeable, professional and confident, Dr. Taban really is. I had a detached retina. I waited longer than I should have to go see the Dr. The first two doctors that I saw wouldn't address it as it was bad. Dr. Taban had me in surgery the very next morning. This is my first time going here and the moment I step into the suite the waiting room is full of people. I don't know if its just a bad day today or what but we waited for more than 2hours!! My appointment is at 9:30am, I arrived on time, fill up the forms needed and had to wait in the waiting room for 75minutes then one staff called me. She was nice and we went to a room wherein she asked systems of reviews and made me read those letters like the typical eye exam. She also had my eyes dilated with drops. After that she asked me to wait in the waiting room again and I waited for 40minutes! Then when it was my time for the doctor to see me, it just went in less than 10minutes! Today 7/7/2017 arrived on time for my appointment 3:30pm was attended right away I was sent up stairs room 205 for pressure check and dilation.i was helped by 2 young women in scrubs I did not catch their names but the woman dressed in purple scrubs seemed more experienced and the other women dressed in dark blue scrubs with pockets trimmed in light blue seemed to be new I do not appreciate being anyone's guinea pig,if I WAS GOING TO BE USED FOR TRAINING!!!! I should have been given the curtecy of them asking me if it was ok FIRST!. Dr. Taban is a true rock star. I was diagnosed with a very badly torn / detached retina, and rather than instantly taking the easier (and likely much more lucrative for him) route of full surgery, he suggested first trying his skills at a combination of 'gas bubble' and cryo (freezing) procedures. While not an option in 100% of cases, he suggested for mine it could be worth trying, vs. much more invasive full surgery. I agreed, and in short, he 'nailed' both procedures (and I also followed all post-procedure instructions perfectly), and only 5 weeks after the first procedure I'm now back to 100%. Waited several hours at the office to see the doctor for an appointment to spend less than 5 minutes with the doctor. He seemed very rushed. The tech was nice and spent more time with me than the doctor. Extremely tight waiting area, where you're basically sitting on top of each other. Main issue: I explained to the front desk over the phone prior to scheduling my appointment that I had not met my deductible yet, so I needed to know the cost of the appointment. They told me $250, which is already really expensive. I paid at the time of the appointment. I was then billed months later for $173+ dollars. I contacted the office and was told that the ultra sound, which I was also told is unnecessary and expensive, was an additional cost. I was never told this during my appointment. I also received this unnecessary and costly procedure before even meeting the doctor. Doesn't it seem more appropriate to look at the patient first to see if an unnecessary and expensive procedure is going to even be useful or if the patient can afford it??? My eyes ended up being perfectly healthy when he looked at them, so the ultrasound was completely useless and unnecessary. What they did was dishonest. I've contacted the office to have this expense unbilled and was told they'd take 50% off. That's not acceptable. They will now get the permission of the doctor to take this charge off. We'll see if the doctor does the right thing. Update: they wrote off the remaining balance, which is appreciated.
