A very chill and fun neighborhood watering hole. But the reason for only 3 stars is the mixed bag of bartenders. Some are excellent! Some need to learn how to mix a decent cocktail... We check out who is tending bar before we'll come in for the night. Apparently, there's no training, nor 'standards', it's just whatever someone says they know how to do. This place was the one and only home bar I've ever had. Nothing could ever replace it. The people are amazing - especially because they hold a beautiful line of tolerating no bullshit and forgiveness. Drinks are great, service is wonderful, and the regulars (my former neighbors) are amazing (with a small handful of exceptions). Lived in the neighborhood for years, was softball team adjacent, and it's some of the best times in my life. Don't let its rough-edged exterior (or interior, for that matter) scare you away: Mad Hanna is a low-brow dive with high-class cocktails and service, that has been abused (lovingly) by its patrons and proprietors. It knows what it is, and what it wants to be. Devoid of all pretentiousness, Mad Hanna is the sort of place where you also can come as you are, be who you want to be, without judgment, surrounded by like-minded, liquored up individuals seeking refuge from our collective weekday demons. In short, the kind of place I'd like to visit more often. Unlike most dives, you can get a fantastic, hand-crafted cocktail, that actually tastes like the drink you ordered, instead of the sort of watered-down, blasphemous amalgamation you'll find elsewhere. You can also just order a beer or a White Claw and get "White Girl Wasted" without feeling guilty. During our visit, there was a DJ spinning an eclectic mix of pseudo-country music that I am still struggling to put a label on; regardless, we enjoyed it. The usual offenders of pool tables and gambling machines occupy most of the inner space, although I feel like they could be cleared to create impromptu dance floor at the drop of a hat. There's also a semi-sequestered nook off to the right of the door, with comfy leather chairs and lit by twinkly lights, should you be in the mood(le) to canoodle. From the outside it looks like it would be a no frills dive but this space is anything but--disco ball anyone? Hell yes! The bartender was super sweet and they had a ton of fresh squeeze cocktail options. We were thrilled to see they had our favorite bourbon too. I got the chance to come back to Mad Hanna now that it's a bar again, rather than a general store as it was during the start of COVID. It's such a good neighborhood spot. Friendly but chill bartenders, a pool table, bar seating, booth seating, table seating, outdoor seating - both converted street parking and a back patio, a handful of beers on tap and any mixed drink you want, a small menu of bar food. We got the margarita, a glass of beer, and split the veggie nachos - which the bartender kindly pointed out was probably enough for two to snack on so I didn't need to order extra item. The place is definitely on my rotation of date night spots and local watering holes to frequent. read more

During Covid they had made some cool upgrades to the patio, but now it's just a boring pile of rocks, smokers and nothing to look at - they painted over whatever shed thing was back there. A cool enough spot, definitely has a good "dive" vibe, though I agree with other posts that the hipster element is a bit too much. But it feels...clique-y and political. We were in one Friday afternoon and the bartender and what appeared to be regulars were engaged in a conversation that was very man-bashing (and the bartender was male) and overall angry and arrogant. And due to that ongoing conversation we had to wait a bit longer than I'm normally ok with to get a drink, especially since it wasn't busy. I get it - it's Portland. When I visit I have to remind myself what a bubble this town is. But can't a girl just get a cocktail without the rhetoric? This wasn't my first visit and it wasn't the first time getting mediocre service. Not sure I'm inclined to go back. read more

This is honestly my favorite bar in Portland and I hate leaving a one star review. Yesterday while at the bar in the afternoon I was plagued by silence. The policy of jukebox only for music isn't fair to staff or customers. I don't want to listen to a juke box that isn't updated often enough to be interesting or to the sound of slot machines or other people's private conversations. Please let the bartenders play music or update the juke box at least once a month to keep things fresh. read more

Not only is this place a super cool dive bar, with great strong drinks and excellent staff but in my humble opinion they set the gold standard for Pandemic Practices/COVID protocol in this town. Instead of just a bouncer, they have someone doing contact tracing and temperature checks (one of the only places I've been to that does this) In this strange times they've even turned the indoor space into a tiny store selling portland collectibles, local crafts, pantry items and vintage clothes!! This is my local neighborhood watering hole for the last few years. It's always very chill, and I've become very friendly with many of the regulars and staff. They're doing their best during Covid Times. OLCC inspected them and they were top rated for their safety protocols, and industry friends have told me they wish other bars and restaurants were as strict with their new rules. They take your name, phone #, time in, and contactless temperature before you're able to enter. Drinks are ordered once you've been sat. Lots of sanitizer everywhere. It's about as safe as you can make it. Support your local businesses, The service industry could use some money thrown their way. read more

I don't really want to write a review so much as transcribe my interaction with the bartender. My friend and I walked in around 1230am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning... Friend: Do you have nachos? Bartender: Yeah, but they're shitty. Me: How are they shitty? Bartender: They don't have real cheese. Me: So, like Taco Bell? Bartender: *nods* *Friend and I look at each other, look at bartender* Me: We'd like the nachos. Bartender: Do you want chicken on them? *Friend and I look at each other, look at bartender* Me: Yeah. Bartender: Do you want something to drink? Me: Do you just have PBR? Bartender: Yeah. ...and $15 later my friend and I had a giant plate of nachos that were exactly what we were looking to have in our lives. As to the reviewy part, the music was loud, but 100% my jams (at some point Prince was playing, and when we left November Rain was playing). The DJ had two turntables and all that, but I didn't see him scratching or anything; not complaining cause a live curated playlist that taps my childhood is always welcomed. Really they could have turned the volume down some though, this place is small and really didn't need to be shouting across the table. The crowd is very hipster. I live in the neighborhood and stop in here occasionally. Love the vibe, the patio is cool and the music selection is great. Service is spotty and pretty frustrating at times however. Stopped in tonight (11/2) at 5:00 pm and sat at the end of the bar for 10 minutes watching the bartender wait on and chat with her hipster pals while ignoring me the whole time. Went to the service area and stood in line while said bartender took her time washing glasses and chatting about the lack of good Mexican food in Portland with same hipster friends. We played board games (the bar has a ton to choose from!), enjoyed the most delicious invention ever: PUDDING SHOTS!! and ogled at th variety of food from the menu. I loved this place long before 2020... did like... its thing... and I love them now more than ever. They're taking this stuff seriously. They're being careful to keep us safe while we get our drank (or non-alcoholic or CBD beverage or whatever) on, with a quick temp check at the door, and plexiglass at the bar, and table service, and some crazy careful bathroom protocols, and more. They continue to have our backs. I had the St. George's Hazy IPA and whatever fruity Saison they've got right now, and both were delicious. Stopped in here on a whim. No real reason. Was very pleasantly surprised. This is most definitely a neighborhood dive bar. Back in the day, you would call this a Working Mans Bar. It caters to the neighborhood, and bless them for that The interior is clean and very well maintained. The bar has a large selection o booze, and the beer appears plentiful. My draft beer during happy hour was very well priced. It was also busy for a Sunday afternoon, but in a good way. Regulars abounded, which is a good sign, because that means people want to come back. I was greeted instantly and warmly, and served promptly by a very competent young man. I notice they had food, but it looked like typical bar nibbles and nothing very substantial. I also imagine the lone barman would be tasked to do it, though I could be wrong. All in all, if I lived in this neighborhood, I would probably consider making this one of my local hang outs. read more

I noticed the daytime bartender had finished their shift and was smoking a cigarette close to one of the unlit heaters. I kindly demanded that they refill the propane tanks on all of the heaters and make me a plate of nachos, but was told that this was not possible. I watched them go through the roller coaster ride of purchasing the business (formerly the Rovon Inn) and I was one of many friends who helped refurbish the space into what it is today. And what it is is a neighborhood bar. There are not 40 taps of 10% ABV craft beers. There are no duck confit and watercress finger sandwiches. What there is: * A range of tasty beers on tap, from craft to Coors Light * A full bar and highly skilled bartenders behind it, in case you'd like something with a bit more punch to it * Pool table * Smoking patio * TVs for the viewing of sporting contests * Solid happy hour This is a workaday neighborhood bar. A little divey. A lot of comfort. An easy place to hang out with friends and watch the game. A great place to swing by for a quick pint by one's self and meet the neighborhood locals. But what really makes this place special are the owners (and their staff) and their approach to business. I came through Portland on a West Coast road trip. I stayed at an Air BnB spot about a 10 walk away from this place. Being from Los Angeles this place really filled that empty hole. Amazing on the spot service from the Bartendar Mathew(No need to be a neighborhood regular), good beer, fresh fruit cocktails and a juke box with some Elvis Costello, Sam Cooke, Billy Holiday, The Replacements. The crowd was diverse in age and style. Being the only non-white pair in the bar, we felt very welcomed and served. This place will definitely be a future stop for me. read more

I LOVE their fresh squeezed margaritas and their signature cocktails here, specifically the one called "lime in the coconut" is delicious. Started out GREAT. Jello-shots with pop rocks? Banana cream pudding shots? Yes! Jukebox.....yes! We were the ruling dee-jays for two hours. It was a family night. Four almost 50 year olds and our 21 year old kids. Then some freaky guy came weaving in drunk...pool stick in case. (And yet....he was served a drink. He couldn't STAND up straight) My daughter had her name on the board as the next pool player. Her name comes up and suddenly it's Pool Shark Alley. A regular and his drunk ass weaving friend (we were told they were regulars by another regular) got up into my daughter's grill, she had to hold him back and eventually push him away, my husband had to get involved and FINALLY the bartender helped out, but only to say my daughter 'used hands'. WHAT THE HELL? A bunch of people came over and said those guys were 'in the pool league' and 'ran the place'. The bartenders were clearly protecting them and not us. The people actually following the rules. I have no clue how something so good, turned so bad very quickly. One bartender was apologetic, the other was clueless as to why we were upset. The fact that she said my daughter was 'handsy' when another patron was screaming in her face is MIND BOGGLING. We will NOT be back even though we were initially excited to find such a great new place just blocks from our home. The night was ruined, but we ended it at Peter's at 57th and Fremont with a great pool table, no drama. read more
