Having been a patient for 5-6 years, After taking my kittens in for a vet apt when i first rescued them the vets pointed out funny breathing but didnt offer to do anything for it, when it got worse a few days later they made me wait longer to take them in, charged for the checkup again, then slapped with a bill i had to go to a bank to finish paying so i signed a agreement to pay as they said i could, few weeks later they send me a letter telling me they will no longer serve me because they dont do payment agreements, meanwhile my kittens still breathe a little hard a couple months later because of their poor service but I'm the problem? my Bernese Mountain Dog delivered 4 puppies Saturday evening. Monday morning she had spiked a temp so I took her to see Dr Nikki. she was given pitocin with the plan that if she didn't pass the retained puppy she would need a c-section Tuesday morning. Tuesday morning I was told to take her to MedVet as there were no doctors available to perform the surgery. So disappointing!! We had a plan, or I guess I did. read more

I had taken my dog to Dr Joe when he was at a different vet office. My older dog had surgery and she had pain management issues. I took her back in after hours Dr Joe met me there and he actually spent the night with my Daisy and gave me updates every couple hours. He did not pass her off to a tech he stayed with her. When he left the practice I tried all the other vets in the office and was never satisfied I felt like I was in a money mill not puppy mill. I accidently found Mad River Vet thru a friend who suggested it and was so excited to find Dr Joe again. Dr Nikki and all the other doctors are wonderful also. We have been going to this vet for about 2 years and have been dismissed from the practice for being accused of euthanizing our pets for behavior problems and not following their treatment plans. Our first dog had hip dysplasia so bad that the vet wondered how she was even able to walk. We were told that she was not a candidate for surgery because she had it on both sides, they gave the surgery a 5% chance of being effective. The vet wanted to do a two week trial of anti-inflammatories and to reevaluate in 2 weeks. The drugs didn't work and she was getting worse. We also had a special needs cat that was born with many birth defects that involved her back end. They treated her for over a year for recurrent UTIs that get coming back. The vet agreed that euthanizing her was the best option. Our most recent dog we adopted was a very old lab that we rescued from the pound. He had a tumor hanging down from his leg and had many lipomas on his sides. Nobody wanted to adopt him and the pound would have put him down. He was diagnosed with laryngeal paralysis, we were told that he was not a candidate for surgery due to his age. We managed his condition for a year before he got to the point that he was having trouble swallowing and eating. He was constantly in pain and was putting on weight even though we were reducing his calories. The vet told us that he probably has some other condition but it would be too expensive to treat. The vet also agreed that we done the best we could for him and it was more humane to put him down. The dog that would brought in for behavior issues is still very much alive and his behavior is improving. The accusation that we are euthanizing our dogs because they not behaving is a an utter lie and fabrication. I would not go back to them and they will not see another dime of my money. We have followed their recommendations, I have the bills to prove it. I guess they want people to continue to treat animals that are in absolute misery so they can make more money. That is unethical and inhumane, if you ask me. read more

Be aware! Dr. J. Maynard and Dr. Leese misdiagnosed my dog's condition as a heart problem and mis-prescribed medication for 15 months. When they finally referred me to a cardiologist at Med Vet he took her off the medications because she did not have a heart condition and referred her to internal medicine. The problem was her lungs and while being diagnosed under anestesia her lungs were not providing enough oxygen to her heart and she passed away. Had Maynard and Leese referred me to Med Vet 15 months earlier my dog's condition, while not curable, could have been controlled and she would be with me today. The experts at Med Vet said that most heart conditions cannot be diagnosed on the basis of X-rays alone. If Maynard or Leese (or anyone else at Mad River Vet Hospital) uses X-rays to diagnose a heart problem for your pet go to Med Vet to get the correct diagnosis! We have taken all our animals here and are VERY satisfied. We met Dr. Joe years ago back when he worked at another vet in town and he was always the one that we requested when we made appointments. We were so sad that he was suddenly gone. Months later he opened his own practice and we were overjoyed. Dr. Joe has always done a great job with our cats and our dogs. He explains everything well, doesn't talk down to anyone, and respects his clients. He also is wonderful that he doesn't sugar coat anything and is very honest about what he thinks the best course of action is. Once he opened his own practice, we met Dr. Nikki and we were just as pleased. Dr. Nikki has taken equally good care of our furbabies. These vets are kind, caring, and very knowledgeable. More recently we've also met Dr. Wolf who joined the practice and she is also friendly and caring. She was also the one there when I brought in a dog that had been killed in traffic. She was more than willing to take this deceased dog in, scan it for a microchip, and bring the family who was missing this dog some closure. (proof she's not 'all about the money' as the previous reviewer claimed). She has also seen our dogs when the other doc's aren't there and we've been pleased with her service as well. We have seen all three vets at this practice and would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone. I'm so thankful that Dr. Maynard opened his own practice and I'm grateful that we found him again. We have recommended them to friends and they said that they've usually seen Dr. Wolf when they go and they are very happy with her as well. read more

Our dog had severe pain in his leg and back and was unable to walk without assistance. My husband took him to this office on a Saturday because our normal vet was closed. The vet he saw this day was Nikki and she was very caring and polite. They took some x-rays and were unable to find anything wrong. They sold him some medication and said to let him try that for a week and if he was no better bring him back. By that Tuesday he was in more pain and just screaming each time he was moved. I was in the hospital at the time and left against physicians orders to help with our dog. We took him back to Mad River and saw a different woman, the two owners weren't there. This lady was very rude and yelling at us because we were 15 minutes late getting him to his appointment. She thought our appointment was 30 minutes earlier, but we were able to prove with a witness that it wasn't. She stated that had the tech not helped us bring our dog in - she would have refused to see him. REMEMBER, our dog is screaming in pain every time he is moved. It took him 10 minutes to get in the door with the tech's assistance. This proves they are here for the money not to help animals! After lecturing us about being on time she saw our dog and gave him a shot and told us to increase his meds. We contacted our vet after this and her assistant had passed away and she was unable to see him. So we felt we didn't have a choice now. The next day we called the office and were told to bring him in to be hospitalized. In the end, this vet charged us over $800 for a span of 5 visits, including 2 overnights, and our 7 year old dog only got worse. We expressed our concern with having to pay so much and having no results. So no the gray haired receptionist decided to get involved by saying, "Medvet will charge you alot more". Well guess what, Medvet was worth it because they healed him! Mad River suggested we euthanize him since they couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. They said we could take him to Medvet in Columbus, but it would be thousands of dollars. We took him to Medvet in Columbus after leaving their facility. Their vets took him in there and reviewed his records and said that his liver would need to be tested because they had been overdosing him on steroids! Fortunately, his liver was ok but they did lab work immediately and said his white count was extremely high and he had an infection. He ended up having to have spinal surgery and long-term antibiotics. But if the correct labs would have been done to begin with, he would have never gotten as bad as he did. He could have been treated with antibiotics to begin with! PLEASE IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET, TAKE IT ELSEWHERE!!!!!!! read more

My husband and I have taken our dogs here since we have had them and we have seen all 3 vets and think highly of them all. We have always had good results and they are very compassionate! Their vet techs are also very caring! I have been taking my pets to mad river for the last two years and this past may I took my bichon mix in for his shots and a normal check up. I had noticed that his breathe had become very pungent smelling almost like a dead animal so I asked the vet (Dr. Morgan) to check his mouth and see if she thought that he needed a dental cleaning. She looked and said that his teeth looked good and that he didn't need one. A few weeks later my husbands notices that my dog is acting weird, comes to find out he had a huge infection in the front of his mouth and when I tried to get him in asap the receptionist told me that they were full and could not take any more dire emergencies and basically made me feel that my dog was not important. I ended up taking him elsewhere,they found out that he had a serious infection in his gums and sinus cavity and that some of the infection had eaten away some of his jaw bone in the front. He ended up having surgery immediately and had to have 5 teeth pulled and some bone removed as well. It ended up costing $1,600. Mad river does not care about their patients all they care about is making money. I will never go back to this vets office ever again and I recommend that you not as well if you want the best treatment for them. read more
