This is THE place to train BJJ if you're in Oahu. A mat full of folks that are tough yet nice! Coach Eric, Jeremy, and Michael all welcomed me to their gym! Will come back again!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and other martial arts at it's finest. Good friendly atmosphere. Very welcoming towards newcomers of all ages, levels and abilities. Conveniently located next to Golden Mart which has the best poke in central Oahu. Jiu Jitsu, poke and beer. Can't get any better than that.

My daughter, Heaven Rain's 1st week of practice (3rd day)!

Looking for an awesome Jiu Jitsu class that teaches the Gracie techniques? It's right here at Mad Tiger Academy! My son just started recently & my daughter just started this week & they LOVE it! Coach Eric & all his experienced assistant coaches are great at guiding the children!

    Family training! #Lifeskills

Coach Eric's family are all involved in the business, so it definitely gives you that warm feeling of Ohana.

I have longed to…read morewear a pure leather jumpsuit and run around Paris in stiletto heels, leaping from rooftop to rooftop, raining woe upon all my enemies. I have always wanted to be a badass, but instead I took jazz dance and learned to play the flute, neither of which felt badass. SO. When I am in this gym, and my gf is totally beating me up because she is a master and I am not, I am loving it. And just to clarify, she is beating me up very nicely. Going all slow, trying to not actually hit me even though I keep putting my face on her fist and my ribs on her shin bone. But that is beside the point. This gym is not a large and doesn't need to be. There is more than enough space to punch and kick people, jog in circles and fail at doing those jumpy push-up things. I mean, you probably won't fail, you will probably be just fine like the strapping young men next to me. I'm working on my upper body strength, everyone just shush. And the owner. Coach Haru Shimanishi is the shiz. He is a master. He is a sensei right out of a movie where there's some young buck who is not that good at fighting, but has all kinds of heart and some sad-ass story, and changes his life by waking up at dawn and running on the beach carrying the 50 lbs. jasmine rice from Costco and slapping palm trees, and finally wins a championship fight and also the girl of his dreams and a mansion. Haru is the sensei from those movies. He is a super tall Japanese man with a million stories who has trained countless world, national and local champions in MMA, boxing, muay thai and more. Sometimes I look at the beginning students and think "you have no idea that you are training under a legend." He builds champions. I do not plan to be a champion. I mean, not a martial arts champion. I plan to be a life champion. However, I do like being able to defend myself. I enjoy being in the stairwell walking down to TJ Maxx and feeling like if someone decided to do something sketchy they would encounter... resistance. So much resistance. Even if my glasses fall off, because I don't train with glasses. Obviously. The End.

From the very start, we felt genuinely welcomed and appreciated as part of their ohana. HKA creates a warm, family-oriented atmosphere where students ages 4 and up are encouraged to learn, grow, and thrive. The instructors are incredibly supportive and patient, taking the time to help each student develop not only their martial arts skills, but also confidence, discipline, and respect. Proper form and technique are reinforced early on in hopes of encouraging good habits. There are competitions (optional) throughout the year to provide the students an opportunity to test their skills. What we value most is how HKA teaches lessons that go far beyond self-defense. The values learned in training carry over into everyday life, helping students build strong character both inside and outside the dojo. It truly feels like being part of a community where everyone supports one another like family. If you're looking for a positive and enriching martial arts experience where your child can gain lifelong skills and make lasting friendships, we highly recommend visiting Hawaiian Kajukenbo Association and seeing for yourself what makes this dojo so wonderful.
