room set up for a "momentum" workout
    Alexandra S.

What a great find on H street NE! First, they have an amazing deal to try out the gym and get a feel for the different class formats/workouts, and instructors. You get 5 days for $5. Each workout has been different and well structured in that it pushes you to work hard but you choose your own weights and set your own pace. The coaches are there to watch your form and help you, as well as encourage you to keep going, and become stronger. The pace is the classes have been excellent and allow for good form. And even the morning classes are quite full, there is plenty of space for everyone. HIGHLY recommend!

The instructors were really helpful and gave me some modification options. It would probably help to have some background knowledge of common lifts, but the instructors show the movements and they play on video screens if you need it. Everyone attending was generally in their own zone, so there isn't a lot of chatting because you really focus on getting the exercises done in the set times. I will say that the classes go by super quickly because you're always moving. Cons: The programming is set for the whole month. So each day of the week has its set program and you do that each week for the whole month. For me, this would get old (I really need variety). On the plus side, it does mean you get to see active gains throughout the month. The membership plan is a little pricey. I get why it costs so much, since they do have to cover rent and you only really attend during the class sessions. It isn't a type of gym where you just drop in when you want to use certain equipment. The unlimited monthly membership is $299, but in reality you are getting 30 or 31 classes depending on the month. Since the classes are the same all day, it is unlikely you would do two classes in a day, right? So the pricing is about $10/class if you do the unlimited monthly pass and you go every day. Some of the equipment was pretty smelly. I was at one station that honestly made me gag a little... I think the bench or maybe the dumbells had never been thoroughly cleaned with a bleach solution.

I was actually…read morerushed to a hospital because they thought I was having a heart attack, given the pains I was feeling in my chest. The hospital ran its own tests and, luckily, it was not a heart attack. In that moment, I knew I needed to make changes in my life. During the time I had experienced the chest pains, I was studying for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exams and working at an accounting firm. My work days ran really late, which is probably similar to many people in the CD Fit class. I also maintained a horrible diet, consisting of fast food and greasy Haitian food, and did minimal exercise. The amount of mental and physical exhaustion that I was experiencing at this time greatly contributed to my blood pressure being high. I then decided that my health had to be priority if I wanted to get the fullness of life, so I decided to leave that firm and continue my life in the DMV. A friend told me of the CD Fit class since they had been doing CD Fit for a while, and they shared with me the class link and told me about their experience with it so I tried out the free period membership pass. I literally almost passed out my first day in CD Fit. In fact, I was told to lay down and put my legs up to get blood to my upper body. Nevertheless, I didn't give up. Clarance, who is the owner and trainer of CD Fit really pushed the class members to fight for their health. Certain exercises seemed unusual but were doable. The women in the class out did me most of the time but as I got stronger I noticed that I did better. I continued to come after the first day and gave it my all again, although I felt like passing out. I didn't want to be embarrassed again so I kept the passing out part to myself and recovered in my car. My endurance was at an all-time high and my body striations were more visible than anytime before. I had lost 30 pounds - from 189lbs to 159lbs and my blood pressure was much better at 128/73. These results are due to the CD Fit training which helps with the physical build and informing participants about eating better through healthy, lean meals. Its an all in one fitness strategy that has gotten me closer to my health goals.

At this point, they are friends. The workouts are programmed in a way that keeps me pushing myself while letting me scale back when needed. The coaching staff is always there to ensure form is solid or to offer an alternative if my body isn't 100% there that morning. Everything is what you would expect for the price point of the gym, and free parking was an important part of my decision since I drive in from east of the river (we only have planet fitness over there, sadly). The complementary training session is good, I know it's meant to sell personal fitness sessions, but if that is something you are into, it might be worth it. Now the gross/ugly: There is a stated policy that "regular swimwear is required" to use the spa in the locker room. Some women have decided not to follow this policy and get in naked, without showering off first, no less. When I said something to the staff, she rudely told me that it was DC law that they couldn't enforce that, told me I could follow her upstairs to talk to a manager while I was standing on only a towel after showering off from the hot tub. And of course, she lied. The law says the opposite, I looked it up -- D.C. Code § 7-431 expressly defines a "spa pool" as a structure intended for bathing or recreational use whose water is not ordinarily drained and replaced after each use and may instead be recirculated. The same statute defines people using a swimming or spa pool as "bathers." More importantly, the District's Aquatic Facilities Regulations, 25-C DCMR § 202.1, specifically provide that rules for admission to spa pools and saunas "shall be enforced." The regulations also require bathers to shower before entering a spa pool or sauna. The regulations further address contamination directly. Under 25-C DCMR § 201.4, aquatic-facility personnel are required to restrict the introduction of "dirt, excreta, and other extraneous matter" into the water and to exclude people showing apparent signs of infection such as open cuts, wounds, rashes, or blisters. The same section specifically requires protective clothing for incontinent bathers. When I brought this to the attention of the membership manager (on duty) she just gave me the GM's card and corporate's email. I have contacted them and cited all DC laws which require them to enforce their stated policies. I know it's uncomfortable to ask people to follow rules, especially when they are naked, but by not enforcing their own rules (or enforcing them selectively, like insisting that nobody have a cell phone in the spa), they risk a decline in the quality and cleanliness of the gym, which is why people pay extra -- for a classy environment that is comfortable for everyone. So I give a huge thumbs up to the classes and the facilities, but unfortunately several of the attendants (all female, sadly, and I'm a girls girl) are at best unfriendly and often rude, and they selectively enforce their own health and safety policies to the detriment of the members.

No matter what shape you are in, who you will be entrusting your body to is very important. I can say with full confidence that every single one of the what? three bad reviews? Of Sweatbox  should be cast aside because they are irrelevant since none of them talk about the actual sweat method and what it does to your body. Firstly, if you are worried if fat shaming/ageism exists here. The answer is a firm NO. I am older, I am overweight , and I was  welcomed with open arms, made a part of the family immediately, and that has not changed since the first class. I went to one OrangeTheory location a year or so back and was full on fat-and-age shamed and that made my self esteem spiral down into dark abyss for a very long time. Because words hurt, because I am already so vulnerable and frightened to cross the threshold of the gym, I need support, not otherwise. SweatBox is all welcoming, all inclusive type of place. Yes, they are located inside an exact copy of the Globo Gym from Dodgeball, (I got jokes) but just walk to the back of the first floor, to the Sweatbox counter, as far as I understand, gym and them are two separate entities. I purchased a 7-day, $34.00 unlimited trial pass online, came 30 minutes early for the instruction session (important to come early, instructors won't say no to you if you show up 5 minutes prior to class, but ultimately you are shorthanding yourself on the instruction part - don't you want to know as much as you can about bike set up, and components of training? And remember that instructors have other student s  to take care of prior to class) I began my training on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019 and I made sure to come every day, dragging my self in sometimes, even if my body screamed to go get nachos instead. The instructors I've experienced during the trial week were: Alexx G Shawn M Kevin D Ashley D I loved all the instructors, Alexx is all tough love, just as described in his bio, but I love his light show and music choices. Kevin has an amazing aura and energy and makes you feel included. Then comes Ashley, wow. I don't know if she somehow hypnotizes the class, but you get in the zone, stop thinking of outside world, and all you focus on is her voice, her example poses, and her corrections, nothing else. At the end of the class, when you finally come to, you realize that you worked out for a full hour and  never looked at the clock once! Shawn is a rare soul. I have my collection of special, big hearted people, the list is short, but Shawn is on it. First of all the energy during his classes is through the roof, he is so charismatic, you WANT to do good to show him your appreciation. But my experience with him is also more personal. When I felt embarrassed, questioned myself, felt weak, cried like a baby after second class, Shawn in the gentlest of ways supported me, was there for me, helped me get past those hurdles and I cannot be more thankful. He always has words of encouragement, listens with attention, he is present. What an amazing human being. To sum up - 15 lbs. down (results will vary of course) and I signed up for an unlimited monthly. They got me good.

Combined with the music and the trainer giving you encouragement, spinning can be a really good cardio workout. It almost feels competitive with all the numbers and colors on the TV screens too. However, I don't understand the hype with $20-40 spin classes when I can do the same workout at the gym and push myself just as hard. I suppose it's worth it if you need that extra push, but I can't really afford $20-40 per class when i can get a membership at the gym for $30 a month. This was more of a hybrid spin/core class that utilizes TRX trainers, so there's that. And they do provide you with a heart rate monitor strap that gauges how hard you're working and calculate what intensity you should be at based on your endurance. The class itself was a 1:1 that introduced everyone to how a real class would go. We learned the basic movements on the TRX trainers and then were taught how to use the bikes. But it felt really rushed. The trainer was speaking so fast, I couldn't even really understand half of what he was saying. All in all, i got a good workout in though and I enjoyed the cold scented towel at the end.
