Let me start by saying that, as I was approaching it, I was thrown off by the fact that they have moved into the ground floor of one of those blocky modern condo or apartment buildings one sees all over Montreal, and even all over the U.S. They are now on the south side of Jean-Talon, near the D'Iberville Metro station. I had two pastries. They were very good, as can be expected. The spinach puff was a little dry, perhaps because it was later in the day. Now, I cannot say anything bad about the pizza because it was "day old" and deeply discounted. It was 99 cents in Canadian coin! In American coin, that would be 75 to 80 cents, so eat the slice of pizza and shut up, right? They were crowded. The service was reasonably good. They are keeping the line on their prices, which I'm sure their clientele appreciates. For me to assess the fairness of that, I have to divide by 1.27 or something like that. They pass the test! I now have to dial up my pedantic aspect to update you on the meaning of "conca d'oro." More so than a "pot of gold," it means a "golden conch." I learned this because Palermo, Sicily's capital, sits in a small planar area hemmed in by hilly terrain, shaped like a horseshoe, and extending out to the sea. So, Palermo, and some of its adjacent cities, are said to sit in "la Conca d'Oro," or the "golden conch." I would still go back to this locale without hesitation. The issue is that, since bakeries tend to feature 20 to 40 things in the glass case, and you may pick out 2 or 3, you may not be picking out the ones that may be the most stellar to you. The zeppole come in many different flavours and are so delicious, the ricotta filling is amazing. I really liked the Nutella one, the flavour wasn't too overpowering. The cannoli were also amazing, we had the regular and the pistachio ones (which are just the regular ones with pistachio bits at the edges). From the line, you can see the ovens where the cheesecakes are baked and the counters where they are stamped and cooled. During the holidays, a Santa is stamped onto the cheesecakes. The line was mercifully short, especially before the holidays, and it moved quickly because there isn't a huge selection to trip up the undecided of the world. We soon left with a tiny cheesecake, enough to feed 4, in its distinctive red and white box, and 4 honey-flavored Madeleines. The fresh-from-the-oven cheesecake was light, in taste and texture, and fluffy. I liked that it was not as sweet as the cheesecakes I more accustomed to tasting, nor as heavy. The Madeleines had a coarse crumb and a crunchy crust. It, too, was subtly flavored. My sister especially appreciated that the small operation creates their products on the premises, rather than shipping them in from another location.

I support them and make sure they get my money rather than giving it to the large chains. NOT THIS TIME. I bought some paninis the other day and, when I got home, found that they were hard and stale. I was going to let it go. No big deal for 3 bucks. I went back the day after to buy a cheesecake for New Years and when I mentioned it to the female "manager" -- you know who you are if you're reading this, blondie -- she blatantly lied to my face, saying that they were always fresh blah blah. Complete BS. The girl who served me the day before even said that they were all they had left for the day. I then spoke to the owner after being treated like an idiot by this person and he basically brushed me off. It had nothing to do with money. It's the principal and I expected they would have treated me like the good customer that I WAS. I left, a bit shocked by the way I had been treated. Walking to my car, a sudden anger overtook me and I thought, I'm going to go back in and demand my money back. So I did, actually pretty shook up, and blasted the arrogant "manager". She replied in an aggressive and disrespectful way, accusing me of having "issues". If I was any crazier at that moment, I would have shown the them what "issues" really looked it. But I held back. I didn't want to end up in jail for thrashing the store, even if the thought did cross my mind. Yes I lost it. Yes I was a Karen. But I will not put up with being treated like a moron by some uncouth employee who doesn't care about her clients when they should show a little empathy and acknowledge their loyalty. So one Saturday afternoon we took a drive up to Laval. When we walked in we were in cheesecake heaven. I wish i could have tried anything i wanted but they only had 3 kinds in the freezer available, i took one of each and was absolutely delighted. The texture is nice and light almost that of a whipped cheesecake. I did find out you can call ahead 48 hrs to place a custom order which i definitely plan on doing as their Crème brûlée and Bailey's cheesecakes were screaming my name.
