I just love the simple, modern elegance of Madcap. I also love that they always have very nice tea options in addition to coffee drinks. This time, I got the carrot herbal tea, and it was SO good. My friend did order her matcha latte extra hot, and it wasn't even regular hot, so she asked for a warm up...but it still wasn't hot enough. She had to heat it up back at the office in the microwave. If you're a coffee lover, chances are you know the name Madcap. Since it's such a well-known roaster, my expectations were high. The design of the shop is stylish inside and out, and the menu strikes a nice balance -- focused but still offering variety, with 5-6 beans for pour overs, classic drinks, and seasonal specialties. My biggest disappointment was with the pour over. I ordered the most expensive option (the coffee description caught me), specifically asked for it "for here," and still received it in a paper cup. For a roaster of this reputation, that was surprising -- and a little disheartening. The coffee itself was good, especially as it cooled and floral notes came through, but the subtle paper taste took away from the experience. The fall specialty nitro cold brew was also underwhelming -- too sweet for my taste and missing the cream top that was pictured on the menu. Overall, I'd still recommend Madcap if you're visiting Detroit--more because it feels like a "must-do" than because I truly enjoyed it. read more

I came here for the first time on Sunday with some friends and it was so cute inside. A little tip: there are very few seats so don't come to do work, chances are you'll be standing. Regardless, the inside was very cool and decorated really vibey and nice. The coffee itself was ok. I got a honey latte, my friend got a cappuccino, and the other one of us got an americano. They have 3 rows of stand up table space that have hooks for you to hang your bag as you sip and chat it up your coffee pals. Really nice touch to have that space. They have a cool bar setup that have large windows to let in lots of natural light. I had the smorelette one day and a coffee flight the next day. It's not a spot to hang out for long. FOOD/DRINK Despite visiting before and having poor experiences pulling shots with their beans, we were visiting the area and ordered the coffee to give it a shot given the reviews we read. We've tried several across Michigan so far and were heavily disappointed by this overpriced 10 oz "supposedly fig jam, tangerine" boiled water. It was definitely overrated at $8.50 and not worth the trek. The best part was unfortunately the Japanese drink-ware. SERVICE The service was adequate given the afternoon non-rush. Love the fact that our city has grown so much and we get to come back and explore! I wanted to see what local coffee shops were nearby and madcap was down the street from us so we decided to check it out! This place was great! From the friendliness of the cashier to the sleek and modern design inside the coffee shop, it's no wonder people come here. I ordered the vanilla latte (hot) and my husband ordered one of their fancier drinks (forgot the name but I believe it was a seasonal drink that was orange and came with a dried orange slice on top) which he got his cold. My vanilla latte made with house made vanilla syrup was simple yet delicious! I must say I feel like with local coffee shops, they just get my order right-I never have to add anything or it never tastes bitter or unsweetened. My latte was perfect even my husband enjoyed it. I think he actually liked mine more than his! And the latte art was chef's kiss! Unfortunately as for pastries, I believe they had pastries but we didn't see much on display so we assumed they ran out. Parking also was an issue (street parking) but that's expected when your downtown anywhere; we parked in a parking structure so we had to pay and walk over to the coffee shop but it was worth it, we were able to sightsee and walk around (a quick walk) to see parts of downtown that we haven't seen in a long time. I am torn on my visit to Madcap. On one hand, the drink I ordered during my visit and the bag of coffee I brought back with me were some of the best coffee I drank this year. On the other, Madcap was so expensive. The latte I ordered, a seasonal one called the Core Memory, was incredible. It featured oat milk and coffee with spiced apple, cinnamon and vanilla. It was then garnished with an apple chip and dusting of cinnamon and sugar. Blown away. I took with me a bag of Reko, a single origin from Ethiopia. For an 8 ounce bag, it cost 23 dollars which is steeper than most other shops I purchase from. With the Reko, I looked forward to my morning coffee just a tiny bit more than normal as it brewed up a great cup. Madcap definitely does coffee well but their price is a bit steeper than other third wave coffee roasters. read more

Their seasonal menu can be a little difficult to understand if you aren't a barista, so don't be afraid to ask what ingredients are in each of the offerings. They make an excellent cappuccino with oat milk and they sell their blends for those who love unique flavors of their premium specialty coffee. Unfortunately their spinach and feta "croissant" was neither a croissant nor remarkable. They were sold out of their regular croissants, so I can not confirm nor deny the tastiness of any other pastry they offer. Their staff is wonderful, and the space is perfect for people watching, reading, or working, with counter height seats facing a window and stand up tables in the middle with hooks for bags underneath the tables. read more

I was in town for a 8pm Lions game and needed a little pick-me-up before the game. Madcap coffee was the first that shop that popped up on Google, so I walked there from Ford Field around 4pm. It's in such a cute little part of the city with hanging lights and a brick alley way. I was immediately impressed with the variety of drinks! I got the nitro, which was promptly made. The nitro was so smooth and for ~$5, it was a high-quality coffee. I tasted some of my sister's matcha latte, which was unsweetened. I'll be honest, it wasn't my thing (and I usually love matcha drinks) and it was super bitter. Just a heads up, add sweetener if you know you like a little sweetness! They also had complimentary water, which was located towards the front of the store. There are also glass cups that are available for self-serve. I wish there was slightly more seating, but I think this is more of a to-go coffee shop vibe. read more
