I went here for a quick coffee before heading to the Lions game on Saturday. Going in the building, everything was white and sleek! The employees were nice. I was surprised that they were so busy at 630pm. There was at least a dozen people in there; they probably had the same idea as me! I was in town for a 8pm Lions game and needed a little pick-me-up before the game. Madcap coffee was the first that shop that popped up on Google, so I walked there from Ford Field around 4pm. It's in such a cute little part of the city with hanging lights and a brick alley way. I was immediately impressed with the variety of drinks! I got the nitro, which was promptly made. The nitro was so smooth and for ~$5, it was a high-quality coffee. I tasted some of my sister's matcha latte, which was unsweetened. I'll be honest, it wasn't my thing (and I usually love matcha drinks) and it was super bitter. Just a heads up, add sweetener if you know you like a little sweetness! They also had complimentary water, which was located towards the front of the store. There are also glass cups that are available for self-serve. I wish there was slightly more seating, but I think this is more of a to-go coffee shop vibe. read more

Monday morning, made a special trip to this highly rated coffee shop. Despite the holiday weekend, still plenty of people inside putting in coffee orders or working on laptops. Had to order the Coffee Flight ($8), which includes a shot of drip, an espresso tasting, and a mini latte. Drip coffee had an odd taste to it, very thin flavor and butter forward. Espresso is better but has a burnt taste that's very strong (even with the water in between). Latte was the best of the bunch, slight bitter evened out with the milk. Menu is limited for food but didn't get to try any of the items. Service works as best they can considering the crowd. The space itself is nice and there is an outdoor area during the warmer months. read more

An expansive location with high ceilings and modern, relaxed design sooth your decaffeinated heart on a very trendy corner of Downtown Detroit. Across from Gucci and connected to the Madcap Hotel, this coffee shop DELIVERED this morning. I've been drinking average coffee from another indie coffee shop in Windsor, while staying with my parents, and wow was I missing a darker espresso roast. My oat milk and honey latte was perfectly brewed and I think it's the roast. Their espresso roast "Eureka" has deep chocolate notes which I now realize I love. The staff was happy and chatty. Parking is a bit tough being what's on the street, but there's a valet for the hotel and there's meters and parking structures locally. My new detroit coffee staple! See you soon Mad Cap. read more

The first time I came here was this past May and thought the iced latte was super tasty with a strong and incredible espresso after taste. Probably one of the best lattes I've had this entire year. I decided to check out Madcap again today since I was in town. This time, I got the cafe latte with oat milk (no up charge for the milk substitute!) which was $5 for a 12 oz cup. Lattes came out pretty quickly with some pretty latte art, too! Overall, the latte was above average. If you're not lactose intolerant, I would recommend the regular milk option over oat milk. I thought the taste of oat milk was too overpowering, leaving little room for the espresso flavor to be present. The drink was still enjoyable, as it was very creamy and delicious. Indoor seating is pretty scant, but they have outdoor seating and you can buy their merch and coffees along the wall. They're a local chain with a few locations around the Detroit MSA, sourcing and roasting all of their own coffee. So if you're a diehard coffee aficionado they have different flavor profiles to appease your palette. I've been a huge fan of Madcap since trying them in their hometown of Grand Rapids several years ago, so I was SUPER excited to see them opening a location in Detroit. And this spot is beautiful. They did a tremendous job with their first location in SE Michigan. It's clean, modern, and chic and the outdoor seating in the cool alley is really awesome. And the coffee? AMAZING. My partner is a coffee connoisseur and we were excited that our hotel was in walking distance of Madcap. We visited about 5-6 times over the weekend. Props to the staff for being attentive and helpful despite the business of a holiday weekend. Space has great high ceilings and is exceptionally large and clean - felt like Venice Beach a bit, with a Detroit spin. Cortado, Holy Basil Tea, Red Tea, Drip Coffee, and Almond Caps were all a+. I've been here before and it's always been decent. Clean lines in the design, specialty coffee, it was fine. Now I walk in today, (because I wanted to change it up from DOCR) and am disappointed if not a little outraged. Not that I care that much. I live in the burbs and would come here on my downtown jaunts. But I'm not sure I would again, based solely on principle. First, you can cut the pretentiousness with a knife now. Low fi beats music playing, no one really having much conversation (it's the silence that is hard to cut through) but then there's one hipster IT customer dude rambling on about how he's invested in bitcoin. Meanwhile, I'm accosted to see madcap has gone greedy. You've switched to 8oz bags now? And still charge $18 for a blend? When local competitors here and nationwide still use 10 and 12oz bags for the same price - or even less (like $15 a bag or less?!) Ridiculous. Same goes with charging $4.50 for a drip coffee. A drip coffee! That's the price you pay at an upper end restaurant when you dine in. The drip coffee is a blend and I'm sure it's something they sell all day long. I'd love to hear their reasoning on this: let me guess, pandemic related, inflation, higher food costs or paying employees higher wages? Sure yeah that's fine for somewhat of an increase, but $4.50 for the most basic cup of black coffee you offer is steep; when other cafes still charge $2.50-3.50 still. My guess is that this location is slow and their rent is high so they've got to pay for it somehow. Now that I think of it, that is how much drip coffee goes for in California now. This isn't Cali; this is Detroit. We deserve better than to be ripped off on an already expensive and trendy product. read more
