Had an excellent experience with Made Lumber. When I came in to look they had a nice selection of slabs and were way more reasonably priced than a lot of other places I'd checked. In particular, they had some beautiful walnut slabs. I wanted to create a coffee table, and I found the perfect slab, a figured maple. Nate offered to finish it for me, which was perfect since I wouldn't have done it justice myself. He also talked me out of staining it, which was absolutely the right call. Honestly, looking at it now I can't believe I ever considered it. It came out so beautiful, I can't help but to keep staring at it. It's gorgeous, like a work of art. The pictures really do not do it justice. It's going to look amazing in my new living room. I could not be happier with my experience and the finished product. I work for a design company, and we sourced a large walnut slab here for a client of ours to be made into a dining table. We contacted Made Lumber and thought everything was going smoothly, until our fabricator noticed after the slab was planed that it was in fact warped at one end. We investigated for a long time trying to figure out the cause- did our fabricator mess up? Did the wood have too much moisture in it? Was it planed incorrectly? After talking with our fabricator, Made Lumber, and the planer, we found out that the slab was originally warped, or had a "twist" to it, and had left Made Lumber that way. They even had a photo of it on its way to our fabricator (which was sent later), and you can clearly see the warp. Before it was planed, Made Lumber recommended us to a planer they use often who had a CNC, but our slab was too big for this machine, so instead they recommended another place that had a wide belt sander that would fit our slab. There was no mention that the slab had a twist this entire time. We took it to the place with the wide belt sander and from there it went to our fabricator, who noticed the warp. Now, Made Lumber refuses to reimburse us in any way or take any sort of responsibility for the warp, or "twist". First they blamed the wide belt sander they recommended, saying it wasn't planed correctly. Then, they said it's our fault because we didn't use the CNC (which wouldn't fit our slab) because this apparently "would have taken out the twist," although other carpenters have begged to differ on this point. If Made Lumber knew our slab had a twist (which they did), and thought that only a CNC would have gotten it out (debatable), then it would have been honorable for them to mention before we purchased it and say "hey, this slab has a twist, and the wide belt sander that we recommended won't get this twist out" but they didn't. We now are down $6000 on a slab that can't be used for our client, and it can't be re-planed because it would be too thin. Needless to say, we will not be sourcing from them or recommending them. read more

I tried to explain what I was looking for and he just gave me measuring tape and told me to look around. I ended up finding what I needed at a different lumber yard. I had a live edge countertop height, bar top style table made for our condo and it turned out perfect!! Black metal stand. It fits perfect with our modern style theme. There's a coffee shop in Cortez Hill (Achilles Coffee) that has live edge countertops. I loved the look and they referred me to Made Lumber. Brian's prices are very competitive and they have a great selection of raw wood. He actually finished a week ahead of schedule. Highly recommend if you want a stylish piece. Absolutely one of the best places I have been to in SAN Diego in a customer service and business sense. Brian is a top class guy, he was very helpful. Gave me my time to wonder around and didn't try to over sell me anything. After I was done looking around and had so questions, Brian came over and offered me help, walked me his shop, listened to my requirements and was able to find me a great piece with the right price, even gave me a price break that suited my budget. He offered to go through a stash of lumber he had in the back, and went through all of them which I didn't pick any of, and he was happy doing it. Then he offered me great advise on what I need to do for the piece I took, it was a home project. Truly a great place, and has a lot of beautiful pieces that they already sell. Top class finishing. Made a trip down to the Made Lumber Supply near the USD part of San Diego. I have to say ive never been in a speciality wood place thats as unique as this. They have some of the most beautiful live edge lumber I've ever seen. Ive been to a few similar places but it seems like they're always charging an arm and a leg for this type of lumber. The guys there were really helpful. I was looking for a particular shape and grain for a coffee table project im working on and they found just what i had in mind. No up selling, no hassle, would have been in and out in 15 minutes if i wasn't tinkering around for a half an hour looking at all the cool slabs and custom projects they were working on. As a hobbyist woodworker I got to say its nice having a place with this type of material located right in the heart of the city. Been in a couple times now and no other shop in San Diego has the selection of slabs (walnut, maple, redwood, etc.) this place does. Added bonus is the prices are very reasonable in comparison to other local outfits (TH&H, Frost, etc.). The owner is super friendly and is more than willing to give you tips and suggestions, which is great for weekend warriors like myself because I need all the help I can get.
