Great phone service & support. Friendly, quick and helpful at sorting things out. Even when I was out of state for personal reasons, I called MG&E, said I didn't forward my mail. The kind midwestern voice on the other end never missed a beat; "Oh ok, no problem. You've always paid on time", they put a note in my file that gave a generous extention, though I ended up not needing it. Along with phone there's an online payment, mail (old school), and pay in person at various places. The automated credit-card bill payment line adds a $5-6 fee. I've lived in Madison for 12 years (cumulatively) and in my experience Madison Gas and Electric is honest in their business practices, transparent with their costs, and faithfully provides quality service to the community. It seems extraordinary to me that their Yelp reviews are anything less than five stars, but then I suppose it is fairly easy to take an excellent utility company for granted. read more

I moved out of my apartment on April 30, 2025, and they continued billing me through June. There was some confusion about service dates, as I actually moved out of the apartment in January, but was required to pay through the end of my lease. I know I entered the end date into their system for April 30th. Customer service refused to work with me for a refund for the time I wasn't living there. It's a complete lack of empathy and understanding. I used to work in a Comcast call center and even they had more ethical policies for refunding incorrect charges. read more

If you can move someplace near Madison that doesn't use MG&E, do it. Power outages only a couple weeks apart with no attempt to correct the root cause of the issue. Both outages several hours long. Look there are a number of things I don't like about MG&E as opposed to Alliant Energy. I used to have Alliant now I'm with MG&E but you must join the Budget Monthly Plan. It works for me as my summer months cost more but my winter months are less. By paying the set amount each month; when I use less than the Budget amount, I receive a credit. An annual assessment is provided each year to decide if your BUDGET amount will stay the same, go up or down. You get to choose if you want to receive a refund check if there's a credit or have it applied back to the account. Should you consistently go over the monthly BUDGET amount, at the end of the fiscal year for you and during the annual assessment - they will increase your new monthly payment to the average of all your months but you won't owe anything for going over. What I don't like: there's no such grace period like Alliant to pay your bill before you know it they will actually report a late payment to the credit bureau. What you say, everyone does that? Even worse. That doesn't make it right just because everyone does it. And if you are going to do it then report every month that's paid on time to boost the score.!?! #ijs. Overall, customer service is good and friendly. But make sure to bring in your bill to cut down on seeing different people at different stations or standing in multiple lines. Oh! One time I paid in cash after they closed and the representative didn't steal my money and actually applied it to my account. I had to send her a Thank you card. read more

Horrid and wretched customer service support. Multiple calls with some of the most incompetent people working there. Eletricity shut off for 4 days BECAUSE OF THEIR MISTAKE and not even so much as an apology. They offer payment plans and then negate their own setup for plans with their own offered terms and conditions. Terrible customer service and God help you if you have a service call need. If you have a choice, literally anything is a better option than dealing with MG&E. read more

So during this COVID-19 Crisis I have seen other Gas and Electric Companies from friends in other States receive letters from their equivalent Gas & Electric companies forgo the billing this month due to the Outbreak. It seems my intuition that MG&E is not one of the better companies has been cemented. They have a message on their website but it basically says "We have closed our Lobbies but you can still pay us money online or by dropbox!" I loved the 'heartfelt' letter by their greedy Chairman, President and CEO, Jeff Keebler (can just tell he's full of himself by putting all three of those titles under his name). It was a lot of P.R. B.S. stating they are trying to help to make things better, etc but still need us to pay our money despite the fact that most people are out of work until at least April. Also everything everyone else says about this company is essentially true. Their website is horrible and difficult to read, only one person can have access to an account. If you get screwed by someone who lived at an address who had the bill in your name from a previous residence that bill will follow you FOREVER until you pay it, and they will not help you get it cleared if it gets sent to a Credit Bureau because all they want is money. MG&E are like Energy drug dealers, except there are no alternatives for getting your Gas and Electric from another company. They monopolize the Madison area and are run by people who do not give a crap about anyone else (the lsmaller employees just trying to do their job are not bad people, it's the higher ups that are horrible). It's funny how little I can believe the 5-Star reviews put up on here, I assume they are bought by MG&E because I wouldn't put it past them since fake/bought reviews are VERY common these days. I have never heard anyone say anything good about them in real life or online that wasn't fabricated. Sounds a lot like the people who run the company I have worked for. I have had friendly people on the phone but they cannot do anything to make your life easier besides "Pay Me My Money". MG&E hopefully goes out of business one day and is taken over by some other less shitty company. This entire COVID-19 outbreak and their absolute lack of care when it comes to seeing what other Energy companies out there are doing is horrible, but not surprising sadly. read more

Came to my house without setting up a time to change the gas meter, shut off the gas when I was not home, set up a time for them to re light the pilot lights never showed up. Had no hot water or a stove for me and my children to shower or cook food with. Have to wait for their convenience to come. They don't think of customers, even though you pay your bill every month. read more

One of the easiest ways to monitor energy usage, and reduce it, is to track online how much you use in a house or apartment. MG&E has set up an online system that intentionally makes it difficult, if not impossible, to do so. This also means we use more energy, pollute more, and they make more money. To be very specific, only one person per residence can be listed under the bill. This is a software choice of this company. If that person leaves, moves out, get's divorced, dies...any remaining people in the house do not have access to past energy use, even if they live there, and have paid the bill in the past. I've been paying my energy bill, at my own house, for over a dozen years, and MG&E will not give me access to my own information. This is not a legal problem, or a privacy issue, it's a choice by this company to make information available to reduce consumption. They should be ashamed, the Public Service Commission (PSC) should address it. And for goddness sake, don't approve yet another rate hike for them, until they focus on energy conservation. read more

The reviews that saw MG&E is like an energy Mafia are true. They actually report to credit beaureus and I have 10 missed payments over 4 Years. 2 years they didn't report anything but miss a payment and it will show a hit to your payment history. It also shows up as a loan on your report. I have never had a utility company report in a monthly basis to the credit beaureus. If I was in collection then yes once or twice but monthly? I have reported them to the state energy commission because of their credit reporting crimes. read more

Just wondering if anyone else out there has ever had an issue with MGE with their auto pay I removed my auto pay option in October this year on the 2nd. Simply they don't give you an option to pay at your option only on theirs. The 22nd of the month came and I received notice that my payment had processed. I was shocked, it returned causing me NSF and they MGE, charged me an additional 20.00 for NSF. I immediately went in with help and removed the auto pay option again. November came along and again I get a email stating payment had been processed again. Again I'm on the phone with MGE customer service. They informed me that I had reinitiated the auto pay option the same day as I had removed the option. TWICE!!! Third time I removed the payment information and again cancelled the auto pay option. They informed me that I was the only one who could have reinstated or cancelled the auto pay option. Has anyone else had something similar? sonlin54@gmail.com read more

I typically don't write reviews but I just had the best phone call with a MG & E representitive I had to come and rave about it. Upon calling the customer service line I was directed within (quite literally) 2 seconds to a very friendly representitive who was very helpful and informative while I was trying to change my service location. So if you miss payments they will report to the credit bureau but they than say they Will not report that you are cought up. Instead of them reporting the coount is in good standing with 0 balance the make you file disputed with each credit burea. I think it is unethical behavior. read more

I moved out of MG&E's service area a couple of years ago. When I moved, I paid my bill in full. I had a couple of late payments about a year and a half earlier, but everything was handled. I had been with them a total of about 10 years, and missed a couple of payments about 8 years in. I was recently reviewing my credit report and was shocked to find that they had reported those couple of late payments. They had also reported only the negative payments, omitting the eight prior or two later years of on time payments. And they left the account open and showing a balance which would have been accurate as of the time reported back in 2011 As a reminder, the account had been closed with a zero balance two years ago. But they were showing it open and carrying an untouched balance for three plus years. I called to request that they update their reporting. They declined to connect me with the department that actually manages their credit reporting, but after some give and take the rep agree to document my request and forward it on. So a couple of days pass, and I review again. They had gone in and marked the account as closed and set the balance at 0, which is good. But they had also brought my late payments from years ago and applied them to months during which I had no account or service! The late payment patterns was moved up to present, so the account looks like I paid late LAST MONTH! This time I file a dispute with the credit reporting agency. A few days pass, and I have a reply from MG&E. They say the file has been "updated". But when i look at the report, they have changed nothing. It says my account closed in January of 2013, but that I paid late several times in 2013 and 2014. A year where I had no home in their service area, a year that occurred after the account was closed, and a year that showed no ill payment report two weeks ago. I can't decide if they are grossly incompetent or if they are attempting to manipulate my credit report to harm me. Either way, one more call to them on Monday then I call the lawyer. These folks have no idea what they are doing, and given that limited skill set they should not have access to people's credit reports. read more
