Expensive service call yielded zero results. We have two CO detectors in our house, one upstairs, one in the basement. Both went off within seconds of each other just after I turned up the furnace in the morning. Bethke sends a tech out, I need to wait there and miss work, so that's not helping. Guy gets there, immediately makes up his mind that my detectors are faulty because they are old. Does a simple check for CO at the heat exchanger exhaust and the outlet into the ducts and comes up with a low CO reading. 20 mintues later, I'm $240 lighter with no real answer as to what happened. I checked my CO detectors later and they were working. So... I paid $240 for a half-assed, incomplete diagnostic by a monkey with a 5-gas analyzer. If I did that as an auto mechanic, I would be through. Do yourself a favor and call another company. read more

A little while back, we noticed that our furnace was not kicking on, and the temperature in the house was dropping quickly, as it was below zero outside. Yay Wisconsin! We called a couple of places around and they told us we were out of luck for a few days, but Bethke's dispatch team was really accommodating and had a tech, Mike, at our house within less than two hours. Mike was extremely knowledgeable about the issue at hand and was able to fix it quickly. He also explained to me everything that he did, and I feel confident that I could do it myself now if it came down to it. He also gave me some helpful reminders about maintenance. I thought we were going to pay an arm and a leg, but the bill was the best part. Incredibly reasonable prices for lightning fast and thorough service. I would call these guys again in a heartbeat, and I think you should too. read more

We had Bethke replace an old boiler and put in AC units in our older house. That was great. Unfortunately things have gone down hill from that first encounter. I called them twice to get a quote. First time, they came out gave us a quote but when it came time to do the work, they called me 5 minutes before they were going to arrive and canceled on us. Person on the phone told me that they would reschedule but we have not heard back from them. Fast forward a year from that time, I called them to get a quote to have thermostatic valves installed and have our boiler serviced, Brian came out to look things over. He told me that he would get back to me with a quote within a few days but I have not heard from him and it's been a couple of weeks. read more

I recently had a service technician check my air conditioning system as it was blowing warm air. The service technician was courteous and professional. He spent about 15 minutes checking different systems and concluded that the system had a malfunctioning TXV valve. He scheduled a repair for the following week. Keep in mind that the outside temperature was in the high eighties. I called another service company the following day ( a week was too long to wait ) and they diagnosed the problem as a simple lack of Freon. Specifically, the system was down to one pound of Freon when it is supposed to be at six pounds. After a pressure check, for leaks, he filled it up and it has never worked better. How did the Bethke technician miss this and why was he going to charge 700.00 for a TXV valve repair when all that was needed was a boost of Freon? The bill says he "found the TXV valve faulty" when in reality he told me he was troubleshooting, and that if the TXV replacement did not work, he would look at other factors. Either the technician was careless, or worse, there was an attempt to inflate the fee. A call to Bethke about this was met with a defensive and cool response. Their response is, "we've been in business a long time". I will not be using Bethke and I won't hesitate to share my experience with other home owners. read more

I cannot recommend Bethke highly enough to anyone needing HVAC work on their home. They have performed emergency repairs on two occasions. They are true professionals and provide the highest level of service. Unfortunately, on the last visit, the furnace was beyond repair. It was on the order of 10 years past its expected service life so how could I complain. John, the service technician, arranged for a replacement furnace that was installed in short order. Needless to say, I know who I will go to to replace my ancient AC unit next year. Okay, I have no idea why Yelp places me in San Francisco. I am in Madison, WI. read more

I had a furnace check-up from Bethke on a Wednesday. They completed the check-up just fine, and since the weather has decided to be nice and warm I turned off my furnace. The next morning I turned on my furnace and it didn't work. I called Bethke and they said they wouldn't be able to get back to my place until next Monday, another six days away . I decided to look into getting a new furnace instead. A different company looked at my furnace and found that Bethke hadn't properly replaced a part. I called Bethke to let them know about this. I wasn't offered any compensation for their mistake. So I would say that is 3 strikes, they are out. Needless to say, this is not the sort of company you want to rely upon if you need to keep warm in Wisconsin. read more

Today after and endless stretch of below zero temperatures, our furnace decided to take a break. I called another large Heating and air company at noon and they weren't sure they could get anyone out on the same day, and if they could I would have to pay overtime rate at $180. I called Bethke and Jeff arrived in an 1 1/2. Within 5 minutes he identified that it was a frozen air intake pipe and it would take a few days for it to naturally de thaw. He changed the way the furnace drew air and within minutes we had heat. Jeff said they would return next week after the pipe de thawed and return the intake to outside air. One $85 service charge for both trips. Bethke H&A was the hero of the day! read more

Bethke installed baseboard hot water heat in one room a few years ago. Did a decent job with the plumbing, but installer was sloppy. Left debris on the ground after drilling through a concrete wall. Made a mess of the baseboards. The heat stopped working at the start of the third winter. The owner said he would send someone out to look at it for $100. That's just to look at it. I figured out on my own that it was a bad zone valve actuator. When I told him that he said he would fix it for $286. Fixed it myself with a $50 part. Before this heating problem arose, I had 6 contractors bid a Mitsubishi ductless mini split heat pump. Bethke's quote was the most expensive by far, twice the cost of the lowest bid for the same work. read more

We are on Bethke's plan to have them look at our furnace in the fall and AC in the spring/summer. Let me tell you. This is TOTALLY worth it. We're pretty novice homeowners who know nothing about HVAC. Having them call me to set up the appointment, bringing the air filters, cleaning the AC and checking everything (that I know absolutely nothing about) and tuning everything up, provides so much reassurance and makes me feel like I'm winning at adulthood. Totally worth it. Not only that but every time they've come they've taught me something about our system, how we could run it more efficiently and tips or tricks on keeping our heating and cooling bills lower. The plan that we're on also is almost like insurance. If something happens (furnace or AC go out), we get a discount or flat rate for them to come service it for us. The technicians are so smart and knowledgeable. There is so much added value to having them come and tune up your HVAC. Beyond impressed with their service. read more

The service was fast and excellent. The technician was knowledgeable, helpful and accommodating to our schedule. The furnace works great and was reasonably priced. Also, they installed a temporary part in our old furnace to keep us from freezing to death while we waited for the new one, then removed that part all at no charge. I wish this was the end of the review. if you are applying for a rebate through Wisconsin Focus on Energy SUBMIT YOUR OWN PAPERWORK. We didn't have the serial number for our furnace and someone from Bethke said "don't worry, we will submit it for you." The paperwork was never submitted. After 10 weeks passed without our rebate arriving, I called Bethke and asked about it. Apparently, due to a medical leave, the paperwork was never submitted. The error had been discovered about 2 weeks earlier and i was assured the paperwork was submitted. No apology was offered, but the person on the phone at Bethke said they would call Focus on Energy and try to get the money expedited. They would call me back to let me know the result of that conversation. I never received that phone call. a week later, I received an envelope from Focus on Energy: my application has been rejected due to incomplete information. It has been 11 weeks since our furnace was installed and we could really use that money. It is 82 degrees outside. read more
