Of all the cities I visited in Spain, I did the least research on Toledo. (We were only there for an afternoon.) I had several places bookmarked, but didn't really make any notes on them. So when we approached Madre Tierra, I had no idea it was a vegetarian place. Back home, that would send me scurrying away, but my fiancee lamented how much she missed vegetables after so many nights of the holy tapas trilogy of meat and carbs and oil. I relented and we went inside. I was pleasantly surprised that Madre Tierra was the kind of vegetarian restaurant that actually offered some tasty flavors for people who like more than a bowl of twigs. I had the arribiata (spicy) pizza (10.40 €) and really liked it. We also started with some veggie dumplings (10.90 €) that blew me away with flavor. Because we were so stuffed from the day's meals, we ended up boxing up the pizza and taking it back to the hotel. It held up as cold breakfast the next morning. With wine and water our total tab for two was 42.20 €. Normally, I wouldn't be caught dead in a vegetarian restaurant, but Madre Tierra has an extensive menu with things even the most voracious carnivore could enjoy. One weird thing about Madre Tierra - the hand driers in the bathroom are not plugged in. There was some kind of air freshener thing in the only outlet. Am I supposed to unplug that, then stretch the hand drier cord over the sink with wet hands? Bizarre. Also, they have motion sensors in the bathroom, so if you're not moving, the lights go out. Dumb.

I guess the only vegetarian place in Toledo, and why it is rather pricey. We had the wok noodle and vegetables, don't expect the way how Asian cooks them. It is too oily and salty. We also had the spinach soup which is not too bad. Creamy and salty.

It was good to see a vegetarian place in Toledo. This place is close to cathedral and we came here just as they were opening for lunch. When we entered the restaurant there was a weird offensive smell which made me think not to eat here, but once we were seated, it seemed ok. We ordered vegetarian Croquettes and arrabbiata pizza. Everything is vegetarian and the 'meat' is made from soy. The croquettes were good but needed a little more seasoning and some dipping sauce. I liked the pizza. Crust was crispy and sauce tasted great. It was a bit oily but overall good flavor. They don't provide tap water here as the water is not clean. We ordered fruit tea instead. They have extensive list of teas and coffee. The server got us a couple of potatoes with pesto sauce and they were good. He then asked if we want bread. Please note that they charge ~1€ for this bread. They don't mention anything about charge and the bread doesn't come with any oil/butter. The restaurant is a little pricey but I guess Toledo is very touristy and this is expected.

Off the beaten path a little, but worth the searching. Very good food and a nice/quiet atmosphere. You won't be disappointed.

Just a wonderful harmony of flavors, whether red meats or seafood. What's more impressive to me is they clear your plates quite a few times when you share some entrées and appetizers. If you're lucky to come on a crystal clear day, you'll maybe sit in the patio area under the umbrellas. Order a bottle of their La Orza house white for dirt cheap and your meal is complete. Certain high seasons, you may not be able to get a reservation, however, all the local guides know the owner so ask your tour guide how you can maybe get in.

I was dining with my teenage son, and despite ordering a full three-course meal (two appetizers, two mains, and two desserts), our server treated us like we were an inconvenience because we weren't ordering cocktails. There seems to be an unspoken rule here: if you don't order at least two alcoholic drinks per person, you aren't welcome. Our waiter was smug and self-important, pressuring me to order alcohol seven (7) separate times over the course of an hour. When I politely declined, he actually scoffed and told me, "In Spain, everyone has wine with their meals." We had already ordered two Cokes and two bottles of sparkling water, yet it felt like our "value" as guests was tied solely to a liquor quota. It is incredibly off-putting to be lectured on cultural drinking habits while trying to enjoy a meal with my son. If you're looking for hospitality rather than a high-pressure sales pitch, look elsewhere.

They probably prefer it that way because the quiet vibe appeared to be part of the ambiance they're seeking here. We just found it by chance on Google Maps as an alternative to the beef-heavy eateries in the neighborhood. We just felt a need to eat healthier. The menu was small and appetizing, and we treated ourselves to two 3,5€ glasses of Zafra Blanco, a crisp Spanish white wine that freshened our palates. We started our meal with a complimentary helping of a "creamy" beetroot dip accompanied by lightly crisped pita chips (Photo 7). Next came the 12€ Spinach and "Parmesan" Croquettes, six lightly fried, falafel-like spheres drizzled with cashew nut mayo (Photo 8). They provided the ideal bites. Jamie went for their signature 15€ Moroccan Bowl with corn couscous, beetroot falafel, sweet potato, spinach, cherries, pickled cucumber, tomato, and fresh dates drizzled with mint yogurt sauce (Photo 6). It was quite a cornucopia of flavors that meshed quite well together with the falafels the particular standout. I decided to go for the 8€ Brochette of "Chicken" with chunks of zucchini and onion and satay sauce over a bed of sweet potato noodles (Photo 9). I'm not sure what the "chicken" was, but the flavor and texture was surprisingly spot-on. At the same time, I'm glad I limited myself to one skewer because I wanted to save room for dessert and the 4€ bottle of sparkling Green Apple Cider (Photo 4). Jamie and I settled on the delightful 6,5€ Tiramisu Cake dusted with Cocoa and swirled with Toffee (Photo 10). We finished our meal with 2€ cups of Cortado with the right amount of warm, steamed milk (Photo 5).
