I have seen this doctor three times for thyroid issues that caused me a miscarriage. I just found out I'm pregnant again and went for my third round of blood work. When I had my appointment she didn't remember I had a miscarriage or know I was pregnant despite me calling a month prior to let them know if I should come in earlier but they just didn't seem to care. She took two personal phone calls while we were discussing my blood work which was very rude. She didn't make me feel better about my situation at all and honestly gave off the impression she didn't care. I called a new doctor and will no longer be having her as a doctor. read more

Absolutely terrible experience. After driving 30 minutes out here, battling for parking, and walking all the way over to their office; the Doctor refused to see me because I was 10 minutes late & they needed to go to lunch within the next 30mins. (They shouldn't be booking new patient appts before lunch, if they can't honor a grace period.) But okay, fine. I accepted it & let them rebook me. We had a family emergency today, and I had to rebook again. I called before my appointment time, and they told me the Doctor won't work with me because I've canceled appointments twice... I was never informed of this "rule", I wasn't a "no-show", and I am absolutely disgusted by this behavior. I made this appointment as a follow-up after an ER visit. I understand the inconvenience it causes when a patient cancels, but wow. To turn away someone in dire need of treatment over something out of my control. In the end I'm grateful, I would hate to have spent a dime at this office, only to find out later down the line that their patients are disposable to them & they have no empathy for the sick. Front office is clean, I waited an hour or more to see the dr. I anxiously waited a month for this appointment with a thyroid that was out of wack needing answers. I get called back by a PA to just review the paperwork I filled out not asking me how I feel or to really get to know what's wrong they go based on what you fill out on a piece of paper. Then the Dr comes in doesn't even have a seat or show empathy or caring she just stood there told me my thyroid lever is hyper and to take medication and walks away, never did she tell me anything what I should do or not do with my new diagnosis . I got a second opinion the meds she gave me were incorrect and she didn't even care to go through anything . We're just numbers and dollars for her. read more

Dr. Madu is a good Endocrinologist and I've seen a few to compare her too. I've had Graves diesae for a few years now and it takes eating well and taking herbs to help with this problem. You can not depend on a physician to heal you with medicine... and then get upset and leave bad reviews because you aren't doin your part to be healthy. Dr. Madu listen well and takes her to figure out the how to help people with thyroid complications. I was a patient of Dr. Madu for more than a year. But , their front office staff is not courteous as far as appointment scheduling and reminders are concerned. After scheduling appointment, they do not have efficient way to send its reminder in advance. I never got their single appointment reminders in one year, either by text message, E-mail or telephonic way. And, when I missed appointment twice, they immediately sent me a bill for $25. Also, when I asked them a copy of my records, they again ask for $25. So, not having proper way for appointment reminders, they were interested in making money, by raising $25 bills. The staff here is amazing. No matter how hectic and/or chaotic it gets, they still have everything under control. I also wanted to add that I see Michele everytime I visit. Dr. Madu has been my doctor for 13 years. I went to her after Thyroid cancer surgery at the urging of my surgeon. My original endocrinologist didn't want me to have I-131 (radiation) after my thyroid cancer surgery "because 97% of people with your kind of cancer live". Well, what if I was in the 3% who DON'T? He simply refused to give me I-131, and I was terrified. Dr. Madu immediately ordered I-131 therapy for me and I have been with her ever since--even though I now live 40 miles away. She is not only a great endocrinologist, but she is one of the kindest people I've ever met. You can tell when she urges you to do something that she actually CARES about your well being. Even though I live some distance away, I will keep Dr. Madu as my endocrinologist--it's hard to find doctor's who actually care. Horrible Dr. Was not caring at all. Made me feel horrible about missing a thyroid lab appt while pregnant.. I missed because I had preterm labor and was hospitalized with an emergency Cerclage. I called the office and explained that I couldn't get the lab in time for the Dr appt. I came to Dr Madu after being referred for a consultation for an endocrine issue. I called 6/26 to schedule an appointment. I left a voicemail with my phone number, authorization number, and requested a call back for an appointment. Their voicemail said that calls are returned the next business day. On 7/2 when no one had called me back, I called again. (-1 star for no call back). To say the girl who answered the call was rude would be an understatement. I was driving and didn't have my authorization number. She refused to look it up and then spoke to me like I was a three year old. I explained that there was a bit of urgency, and she said as soon as they got the fax she would call me. My doctor immediately faxed the results to their office. I didn't receive a call back. Then it was July 4th... and no call still so, I waited through the weekend and I called on 7/8 to schedule. The person who answered did not apologize that I had not been called, and informed me that the doctor was out for the entire month of July. Could she have told me that on 7/2? I guess she was "too busy" even though there were precisely zero patients being seen since the doctor was not in. (-1 star for the poor customer service) As you can tell, we were off to a smashing start with me being a new patient who could not get an appointment scheduled for seven weeks (8/27). Madu's office mailed me a huge packet of paperwork to complete. I did complete it and I came to my appointment at 4 pm (15 minutes early). Numerous questions were redundant. When I arrived, every seat in the waiting room was full (like 7 patients waiting). So that means my 4:15 appointment time doesn't mean a thing to this doctor. (-1 star for not enough seating in the waiting room and for not respecting my appointment time). I get it, doctors are busy but to overbook patients when you have a new patient who waited two months for an appointment is unacceptable. To not call the new patient and explain that there will be a significant wait is unacceptable. At 4:23, the receptionist (who was kind but was overwhelmed as she was completely by herself and was swamped) took my paperwork and collected my copayment. At 4:40 I was called back. They took my weight, height, and blood pressure. I was put into a room at 4:44. Dr. Madu entered at 4:55 PM. I started by clearing the air with Dr. Madu - I explained that I have had cancer twice and that my relationships with my physicians are important to me. She apologized and said that I should only speak with her office manager in the future. I was given scrips for testing (lots of testing) and I went and had that done. I'll not bore you with all of the details but I will say that I did call and ask if Dr. Madu could let me know some details about a particular test - I was informed she "doesn't call patients." I went ahead and scheduled the test for two weeks out - and had it done. Literally, the day I had the blood drawn she called me at 7:45 pm to let me know I should do the test earlier in the day (I explained that I had left the message two weeks prior and that I had done the test and the timing and she said it would be ok). When I explained that I was anxious about biopsy results (since I have had cancer twice) and how I was surprised to learn that she "doesn't call patients" she replied, "I have to have a life. I have three kids. I have to go to Costco and run errands. I called you about your blood test and now you are asking me another question." I said that I was sorry to have bothered her and that I'd see her on October 10th. I think she may have felt bad because she did call me back about 45 minutes later and said that she had logged in and was able to see that my biopsy was negative (no cancer, yay!) This is the only reason I am giving her 1 star... despite the earlier call she did the right thing and checked my biopsy results and called me to let me know. My appointment for follow up to review numerous test results was scheduled for today (10/10) at 4:15 pm - there was an accident near my work. When I realized I was going to be 20-25 minutes late I called. I was told that they only see patients if they arrive within 10 minutes of the appointment time. I explained that I had waited a long time at my first appointment and that I showed grace - could they please extend the same grace to me? After being placed on hold for several minutes I was told no - that they would need to reschedule me for the end of November (more than 7 weeks from today). So, my bad for being late but 7 weeks with NO results because she doesn't call patients - not ok. I told them to package all of my results up and send them to my PCP and that I would not be back to her office. I have filed a formal complaint with St. Josephs Hospital Affiliated Physicians and requested a referral to another endocrinologist. In good conscience, I cannot recommend this doctor to anyone who requires healthcare. read more

I don't recommend this doctor. I waited for about 2 hours to get into her room. They didn't get my documents from my primary doctor until I got there, although they had about two months time before my appointment day comes. It was interesting that doctor asked me if I want to take biopsy. She didn't give me her opinion which is best for me just ask me what I want to do. I first came to see Dr. Madu a dying man with uncontrollable diabetes and no long term thoughts of ever seeing my grandchildren. She took control of my disease, gave me the tools to manage my blood sugar and gave me back my life. On the day of my first Grandsons birth as I'm walking into the hospital I literally run into Dr. Madu. The Lady who made my being there possible. She applauds my accomplishments, but doesn't hesitate to chastise me when I have back sliced. She makes me feel like my care is up most on her mind. Last night she called at 7:30pm to check on if I understood correctly our new plan and meds to keep me healthy. Who does this anymore? She is not only a great Doctor but a wonderful person. I went to Dr Madu for my thyroid to be tested. I saw her once after waiting for 45 minutes in the waiting room. Then was told I needed to come back for follow up lab work. Went back where I waited another 30 minutes for blood to be drawn with an appointment. I then had to come back for a follow up appointment where I waited an hour and then got called back and waited another 20 minutes in the room and then was seen by the assistant not even the dr! To be seen for 3 minutes. I then had to go back for another bloodwork which I waited about 40 minutes this time. I then told the nurse I would not be coming to my appointment because I didn't have the time to waste in the waiting room to be seem For less than 5 minutes. The receptionist told me she would have the dr call me with my results or if I needed to come back in. Needless to say that was in April! I had to call today because the dr who ordered me to go see her wanted to make sure my bloodwork was ok. When I called the same receptionist answered and she pretended to know nothing about them following up. This office has no customer service and the nurses are rude. The only positive thing in this office is the assistant. If you can find another dr in the area... Avoid this office unless you have time to waste! read more

I've been going to Dr Ivy-Joan Madu for over six years now. And every visit feels like I've come home. The Staff is wonderful. They're attentive and caring. They even laugh at my jokes. When I first came to Dr Madu I was a dead man. My diabetes was spiraling out of control, I was overweight and didn't see living beyond 56. But the Dr with that calming voice told me we could get this under control. I just had to work alittle harder. She put me on the correct meds for me. She cheered my successes but didn't chastise my backsliding. She reviews and explains my numbers to me. Updates and refines my diabetes medicine. Which are all down tremendously. Don't come here if you have thyroid issues. My first visit, was quick and more testing was required, understandable. Within a few hours my pharmacy calls and states a prescription was ready for pick up. Dr. Madu did not discuss medication at this visit. I called the office to ask what it was for... symptoms that I did not describe as having and would be harmful to my condition, so don't take it. 2nd visit to over test results resulted in a preliminary diagnoses and a new medicine prescribed. 2 hours after that appointment Dr. Madu called and said don't take the medicine, which I already ingested, she was confused about my results and wants me return in 6 weeks, doing nothing in between. She seems like a nice person but as a Doctor she doesn't come across as competent and could make someone sick with her prescriptions. Scary. My 2nd opinion Dr was able to review all my past test results and was very clear with explaining a diagnosis and treatment plan. read more

I am so disappointed in this office. I would love to tell you how the doctor is, but frankly I have no idea because the first time I went I saw the PA (who, by the way is very nice and helpful - nothing against him), and after I got my blood-work done I have tried to get an appointment to return for the results for WEEKS! I have left multiple messages over multiple weeks, and finally a couple of days ago someone called me back. Our call was dropped as we were making the appointment. As soon as I called back the phone went to voicemail AGAIN (it has never gone directly through to the office at any time of day). I left 2 messages and it has been days and I have not had a call back. I am absolutely astounded. If this doctor wants to get good ratings, she should work on her office staff and find a way to actually see the patients. I suggest administrative quality control here Dr Madu.. your patients cant get to you. The worst part about all of this is that now I am in limbo with money spent on lab work and no results, and I have been living with increasing pain waiting for my results before returning to my pain management doctor (whom I finally just went back to since I was getting nowhere)... I will be asking my doctor for another referral. Don't risk it here if you are in pain or need immediate help. read more

Undeniably the WORST Dr's office I have ever been to all around. For starters, when you walk in, the decor seems dirty and straight from the 70s (Not in a good way)... it is depressing. I walked into the room where the Dr. would come in and the seat that you sit on for your exam was white and RUSTY. Thank God the paper on it looked clean, but I still did not sit there. GROSS. RUST Really!?!?! There was a lamp with Dr. Madu's name on it . . .. are you scared someone is going to steal your lamp in your own office??? I don't get it. Secondly, I was scheduled to meet with Dr. Madu for an emergency prenatal endocrinology exam, and I never met her--ended up meeting with her Physician Assistant, Timothy Yao. He has only been practicing for 2 years and I was a few weeks pregnant at the time, still in my 1st trimester, and Timothy straight up told me (In these words) . . . "Yeah, so it looks like your baby is going to be mentally retarded". I felt like saying 1. Where is the professionalism in that statement? 2. Looks like YOU are mentally retarded. WHO says that to a pregnant lady??? Then, he wanted me to schedule a follow up appointment. -- How about a BIG NO THANK YOU?!?! You can imagine how devastated I was when I left this office (because of the news I'd received and the horrible, dirty decor). I scheduled an appointment with a different endocrinologist immediately after leaving this office and what I found out is that there is no evidence supporting Timothy Yao's statement. Thank God for thorough, educated, experienced doctors who maintain their professionalism at all times while being considerate of their patients needs and feelings. I want to be honest and say that Dr. Madu is nothing but nice and a great healthcare provider. In my one and only experience at her office, I was treated with respect, by her reception and MA. However, it looks like during my initial appointment, my copayment was not collected and since I was at the moment very apprehensive about seeing this Doctor, I did not pay much attention either. Now this appointment was in February 2019. It is now close to May, and the "billing department" called me to let me now that I didn't pay the copayment. I was patient and listened and then explained that when I did go back receptionist said that she didnt know why she didnt collect, but to not worry about it. This lady was just not having it. She proceeded to threaten me, over the phone, at my business line!!! I mean she was on a rant like if I had stolen her designer purse or something. Then proceeds to tell me that there would be legal repercussions and etc and then lastly, says that I was not nice. This experience left me pretty adamant about not returning to Dr. Madu's office. I work with a biller myself and I have never heard her disrespect or threaten any of our Doctor's patients like that. Why would you talk to people like that? Thanks but no thanks. I would prefer a different Endocrinologist since this ones biller has no shame in calling your work and threaten you over less than $100. I have told many of my patients here to not got to this practice if they get referred to Dr. Madu. I work with different medical and dental practices as well so I will spread the great news about this practice. read more

My husband saw Dr. Madu after being diagnosed with a large sized thryroid nodule. On his first visit to her she indicated that she was 90% sure it was thyroid cancer and proceeded to inform him of how it would be treated. After he had a complete thyroidectomy with biopsy the tumor was found to be benign (non-cancerous). Dr. Madu's off-the-cuff cancer diagnosis was based solely upon the ultrasound report and without mentioning that statistics show that 80% or more of thyroid nodules are benign. . read more

Dr. Madu is the most inhumane doctor I've ever come across. She does not even look at her patients, but instead spends the ENTIRE appointment dictating notes into her computer. She does NOT explain thyroid conditions clearly at all, nor explore treatment optoins with patients. If you dare to ask a question, she will be offended, defensive and abrupt. I kept thinking hers and my relationship would get better, so I saw her four times, but things NEVER improved! When she told me I had to have my thyroid removed (which I do NOT, by the way!) and have the bones behind my eyes removed due to Graves Disease, she didn't even wait for me to stop crying before she had me leave the exam room! I sat there next to her, sobbing about my (inaccurate) treatment plan, and all she did was dictate to her stupid computer while I sobbed at the (inaccurate) news she'd just given me! Good God, woman, show some humanity! Oh, and I never went back to see her again. I found a kind, competent endocrinologist instead. Even though this office is rusty and old, I continue to return because I really like Dr. Madu. She always asks about my family and is very sweet and patient. She's actually more thorough than my primary care physician, making sure that all aspects of my health are taken care of whenever we start new medicine or increase doses. Even though orange isn't so close to my home office, I like Dr. Madu so much that I don't mind commuting. Sometimes the wait can be long but I understand that she's a busy doctor and am lucky to have her! read more
