I have been coming to get my hair done here since this salon opened. I love it. I get my hair done by Ben who is absolutely the best but everyone else who works here is also good. This isn't a very high end salon like in the city so the expectation shouldn't be of that either. Some of the negative reviews I don't really get. Out of all the local salons, this is my favorite and I have tried them all. They work very fast so even on a busy day if there's a lot of people, the wait isn't long. Everyone is also friendly. If its not very busy you might even end up getting a 15 minute wash/massage (at no extra charge) :) Anyway, if you haven't tried them yet, I recommend you do. I have been coming here for a while and have had relatively positive experiences (aside for the inconsistent prices that they charge for the same exact service). Today I came and they told me I was next. They proceeded with letting someone cut in front of me and then another person. I understand it's a holiday but I would have appreciated honesty in terms of how many people are there. Everyone who came in was told "10-15min" but it was literally a 45-60 min wait at least. I was asked to pay for my hair wash, which was $10. I did, with no comment. They then chased me out asking for a $2 tip for the hair washer. I am all for tipping generously but I didn't think they would have the audacity to ask me for a tip after waiting so long and not getting what I came in here for. Note that this review is only for their nail/waxing salon. This is located in an entrance separate from the corner entrance if you continue to walk on 13th street. I've probably gone to this place for eyebrow waxing more times than I can remember. It's always the same person who does it (I wish I could remember her name, but I believe they only have one person who does waxing) and in my opinion she does an excellent job. She had told me she'd been doing this for 11 years and its very experienced so I totally trust her with my brows - they do frame your face, after all! It's also very cheap - $5+tip, as compared to many Manhattan salons that may charge upwards of $20. I also believe that this is quite clean, although they do use the same stick to place the wax on your skin, the strips are newly cut and she is courteous enough to put some kind of soothing cream or liquid on my skin after it has been waxed, which I appreciate. The hair salon is great. I'm there every other week sometimes and I'm always satisfied. The nail salon is another story. I'll only get a manicure there if I'm desperate because it's so convenient. It seems like every manicure I've had there has been the worst manicure of my life. Today I walked in to get a change of polish. A man, who I had never seen before, who likely had never seen a how-to video on anything cosmetics related, told me he would do my nails. I hesitated but regretfully sat down. He needed to ask the manucurist beside him before he ever made a move. All he did was wash my nail polish off. He got the polish all over my hands. Told me to wash my hands and was ready to charge me. That means he would paint my nails after. With no plans to clean the nail polish off my skin. I asked him to fix his mistake and he proceeded to remove more nail polish from my nails. But wouldn't even try to clean the polish from my hands. I told the manicurist next to him - because he wouldn't listen to me - that I couldn't have him do my nails because I anticipated they would end up worse than if I let a child do them. She charged me $2 and I left. I regret wasting my time there and even paying $2 for this man to smear nail polish all over my fingers. This nail salon always has poor service. ALWAYS disappoints. Yeah it's $10 a haircut... but expect to get exactly that, a $10 haircut. Roughly shaven with no comfort and little regard about trimming up pieces that stick out or don't lay properly. You ask for a style and they'll cut and shave until it loosely resembles that and send you on your way. However, it's a big mistake. I only can say this is my worst experience in a salon. First off, the stylist didn't really discuss with me how to do my hair, as he was eating his meal..ha.ha. And the woman who perms my hair was not professional at all. She spray the water to my face many times, I was want to say I come here is not for face wash. And she keep pull my hair and made my head dizzy and pain. I laugh when she was washing my hair, she thought she know how to massage the head, neck n shoulder. But she is not!!! I know it very well coz I learnt massage before. She just uses her nails to hurt my head and her wet hands made my neck n shoulder + my clothes wet and uncomfortable. She made me regret to get in this salon. And of course, the result of my perm hair is terrible. They made my hair super curly and very dry. But it doesn't matter, I can fix it by myself, I even can cut the hair by myself. So I didn't let the stylist to cut my hair, as I thought they all not professional. Finally, I found their prices are very cheap. I heard the guy said highlight only $30 and I perm (burnt) my hair only $60. It's been few weeks after my experience here and I can't stop thinking about what happen. I live in the neighborhood and I came here often, almost every week. One weekend, I came to get a wash and curls. I usually generously tip both washer and stylist but this time around I only had enough cash to tip one of them. For a 16$ bill I gave the washer 5$ tip before even having my hair done. I feel they do more with washing and massaging than the stylist just curling my hair. The lady who dresses like a guy came at me rudely as I finished paying the bill like" excuse me my tip" I politely said I'm sorry I have no more cash on me but I gave a good tip to the washer maybe split it. I have been coming to this salon about three times a month for the past few years. All the workers know who I am. I tip well. I've been mostly using Ben or sometimes the other guy (Jake I think). The past few times they told me Ben was too busy and pushed me off to the new guy right in the front. "He's great" they said. "He'll do a great job" they said. Wrong. I hated my hair both times. Plus the last time the lady who colored and washed my hair didn't do a great job washing. I kept telling her the water was too cold but she did nothing. And she didn't condition my hair so when he brushed it out it was hard. It seems that when you are a regular they feel they have you and don't give you the service you deserve. This is like the Twin Peaks of Hair Salon. It's unkempt, lack of focus and children running around. I asked the guy (same one who "cut' my hair) for a shampoo and haircut. Shampoo was not a problem; I had worse and better. There was one kid who kept bumping into my chair as I was trying to enjoy myself. The shampoo lady focus more on my temples than my actual scalp, she also cleaned out my ears.... She told me to sit at a chair where there was still a pile of hair surrounding it on the floor and in the actual seat. The stylist next to it, pointed he blow dryer to blow away any hairs on the seat. Gross but whatever. Apparently someone wasn't done with their haircut so I was asked to move and sit somewhere else. At that moment my friend witness a stylist dropped scissors on the floor and not sanitized them, just kept hacking away on a woman who was texting. I get called back to the first seat by the guy who I originally told I wanted a haircut and shampoo to. He starts blow drying my hair, that should've been a red flag. He then goes to straightening it. He forgot about the haircut altogether. After the dirty scissors and hair everywhere (even by the shampoo area) I was probably better off with just a shampoo and blow dry. read more

I tried many different salons, from $20 to $120 range, and I can honestly say I get better cut from Ben then high end salons in Manhattan. I also had my Japanese straightening done in that salon. To be honest, I was skeptical at first to do there , but it's been a month since I had it done, and I'm very happy with the results. The price was great, and the quality of work was very good, again, thanX to Ben! BTW, I came in as walk-in both times and was taken in right away. Very very bad customer service. I am a regular to this hair salon. I like the cut and wash. But today the hair washer - the lady- piss me off. I already reserve her to have my hair wash. I just hanged my jacket and got into the bathroom for less than 3 minutes. When I stepped out of the bathroom, she was preparing to do hair wash for another customer. She gave me the expression that she doesn't care. So what. I walked out of the salon and went to another one. The owner need to train the employees to respect the customers. I hate writing yelp reviews & have some pretty strong feelings about people who write reviews with regard to service at restaurants but I had an unpleasant experience I will most likely be spending the rest of this year growing out. I asked in what I thought were clear and audible words for my eyebrows not to be shaped; I wanted a simple cleanup. I had thick eyebrows that I had spent the past three years growing and slowly sculpting. My cosmetician halved them in thickness and when I told her that they were far thinner than I had expressed my desire for before when we met, she told me that her alterations looked better and made some comments about my eyebrows having been misshaped before the waxing, which I did not appreciate. Gender & presentation are the hardest things; every seemingly small aesthetic decision I make, long-term and daily ones, from my lip-tint to my hair length is part of the larger painting I am constantly and slowly, considering and making that is my presentation to the world. Its our vehicle for nearly every aspect of our experiences. I understand that my cosmetician and I may have different aesthetic palettes for standards of beauty relating to our most likely very different lives and experiences, but I would have appreciated being kept a part of the process when she chose to drastically change the shape of my eyebrows, after I expressed my explicit desire for her not to do that. I've been handed a mirror several times during the threading / waxing process by cosmeticians at different salons; its not a difficult gesture, and had I been given the option to say no, or further express what I desired, this dangerously close salon might have gained a regular customer. read more
