I came here for the first time to color my hair (birthday gift to myself). My friends come here often and convinced me to give them a try. I came here 3/3 friday afternoon. It wasn't crowded yet as the ladies warn me to come earlier. I haven't dyed my hair in 10 years so I guess it is virgin hair. I got 2 colors: dark brown with blond highlights --- to bring back the 90s look. I was there from 1PM-3:30PM or so... its 2 hair colors, oil treatment, wash, hair cut and style. See pictures (2). I go here almost every other week. They do great blowouts for dirt cheap! and the scalp massages are to die for. One day I was walking buy and saw a bunch of people in there, of all nationalities. I figured I'll give them a try why not. It's pretty cheap for a blowout, no harm no foul. It's really hard to find a salon that can work with my curly hair. Even though the salon workers are Chinese and don't speak English they did what I asked. They know hair! Well at least my curly hair and their cultures hair. For $14 i get, get ready for this: a shampoo, conditioner, scalp massage, back massage and a blowout for $14, I have hair that goes down pass my shoulders. They get 5 starts because you get more than what you pay for. BTW, if you love certain products, bring in your products. I've been going to Twinkle Star to get my hair cut about 10 years now. I decided to write a review today because I had my hair colored at their location for the first time today, and it was amazing! I always go to Kelly to have my haircut into an A-line bob. Back when I had long hair ages ago, I used to have her do my layered cuts. Kelly is has great technique and is detailed oriented and efficient. I will try new salons here and there, but in the end, I always go back to Kelly. She is surely the most reliable and skilled. Today, I had my hair highlighted a dark purplish red color by one of her colleagues, and it was a great deal. They were very honest. I brought in a photo of the exact color and treatment I wanted. I explained I didn't want anything too bright, nothing streaky. I wanted something gradual and natural. Nothing stark. I told them less is more here. They explained they would try to match it as much as they could but they could guarantee only an 80% match at a minimum. In the end I think they hit about a 95% match, which was 110% fine with given I didn't have to give them an arm and a leg for it! Everything came out to $75 for a $15 hair cut for short hair, and a full head of highlights $60. They were very respectful and careful to meet my expectations, and were very transparent about the entire process. They weren't hiding anything, and were very friendly. I felt comfortable with them being able to deliver my ask the entire time. If you are looking a specific cut and color, and are looking for some skillful hands and eyes to execute it, give it a go at Twinkle Star! A couple of things to note: 1. Don't expect some fancy organic shampoos for the wash. But they do have oil and ketamine treatments if that's what you're looking for. 2. Free mini upper body massage with every wash. No need to ask. It's just a standard part of the service. 3. Don't come here if you are looking for 5 shades of blues, pinks, or greens in your hair. This is not the place for that. They might have 1-2 shades of each of those colors. 4. This is not one of those places where you ask them to go crazy with your hair and expect to walk out with some completely new experimental edgy hair cut. 5. It's always best if you can bring a photo of what you want on your phone or something from a magazine. It just helps to make sure everyone is on the same page and avoid any misunderstandings. I have seen young adults, senior citizens, middle aged folk, men and women, children, Hispanic, Caucasian, and Asians -- all come here and leave with great cuts, styles, and blowouts. I'm sure they do killer blowouts, but have them cut your hair at your own peril. For $13, really... What was I thinking? I called for an appointment and when I asked if they had availability, they stressed that Aida was not there that day. Who is Aida? I didn't ask for Aida. I asked for an appointment. Language barrier. While they do have "keratin" shampoo, they charge you an extra $5, and since the ingredients are written in Chinese, I couldn't determine if it contained Sodium Sulfate (which reverses keratin treatments) so I opted for a cut without a shampoo. Um... Don't you want to wet my hair? Dry cut? Ok.... Wait, don't you use a scissor? She trimmed my entire head, bangs and length with perforated texturizing scissors, which you should never EVER use on any living thing, with the exception of a poodle. The dreaded texturizing scissor. You know it when you see it. The "scissor" that looks like it is made of two combs of sharp teeth that chew your hair, bit by bit. Its a telltale sign that your stylist has no skill. It is the Rolls Royce of shortcut-laziness and does wonders for creating split ends and destroying the smooth texture of your hair. A stylist with skill will be able to remove bulk and thin out excess volume with a real scissor. $13 bucks for a haircut. Regret? Priceless. Never. Again. I stopped her in the middle of the hacking, directed her where I desired less length and she argued with me that the cut would be "uneven". Exactly. I didn't want my nape to look like a box, I wanted a graduated length, longer up front, shorter in the back and this baffled and confused her so badly, that I paid and left... Spongebob squarehead haircut in tow... By the way: in what alternate universe do you concern yourself with evenness of length when you hacked away at my length with your cheap ass shortcut texturizing scissors? If you're going to chew my hair shorter, the evenness of my split ends should be your last concern. read more

I've lived in the area for years but never went in. Cousin came to town from out of state looking to do her hair we scoped out several hair salons along the avenue and we felt most comfortable with the staff at Twinkle. They took their time to ask what we wanted to do rather than pushing their ideas on us. My cousin wanted a few blonde highlights mixed into her caramel one and I wanted touch up on my roots and add chunky ombré highlights. We decided to take the leap of faith since their price is better than the other salons we inquired with. We showed them pictures and they kept asking questions to make sure they understood our needs. My cousin liked her highlights right off the chair however I did not really love my end result after the wash and blow dry. There was something "off" about the highlights and the roots were too dark. I voiced my concerns after the blow dry was done and the stylist Leo, suggested some changes to the way it was highlighted. The picture I showed did not have the highlights up to the roots in the bangs however me suggested that would probably make it look better. So they went ahead and touched up on my bangs and while at it lighted up my roots. I went through another round of wash and blow dry and the end result was much better. Twinkle would have gotten three stars but their superb customer service earns them an extra one! Really cared about the customer's happiness even though it wasn't really their fault that the picture I showed them didn't look good on me. read more

Terrible service. They charged me 26 for a cut and blow out when the sign outside said 16. I came in for layers because I was tired of straight boring hair. I now have split ends and a crappy uneven job. They had me switch chairs and switch stylists half way through because someone else came in that was more important. The girl who finished my hair clearly had no experience with my hair. What really ticks me off is my hair was healthy and after messing it up they tried to say I should condition more. You tell them what you want and they'll try to the best of their skill to help you get the look you want. They will also recommend what is best for your hair (like treatments, cuts, etc - even if it means they are going to earn less) They will also recommend products for your hair if you need and they sell some there too. So far this is my go to place to get my hair done. Yes, it is Asian owned. So don't expect the fancy smancy Manhattan type places. They do a very nice job, but get very busy on the weekend. Prices are cheap , but worth it. I get my roots touched up every month or so . Wash and root touch up is about 35 . Add a haircut to it, and it's about 50. Let me say they take their time to wash your hair and massage your head and scalp like crazy. I've probably almost dozed off a couple times. I've gotten my haircuts from Pelly for a few years now and she's amazing. She knows how to frame your face and cut for your hair type. This summer has been way too hot and I went to get my hair permanently straightened with her for the first time and she was amazing as usual, asking with another one of the staff that helped. On top of that, haircuts here for my long hair only cost about $25 each time and the straightening (Magic Sleek, which is supposed to be all natural and not damaging) was $250. They also had Japanese straightening which costs less (options were both under $200). The straightening process took about 4 hours and you can order food to the salon if you get hungry. Or bring food. I would just say that Magic Sleek isn't as effective but those stars will be dinged from another review not the salons! My hair looked great with little frizz after the treatment but every shampoo makes my hair frizzier and frizzier. At this rate, my hair will be back to normal within a month. read more

Definitely had my worst hair salon experience here. I came for a cut and a change in hair color. They offered two choices in terms of different methods of dying hair- a cheaper option and a more expensive option. I opted for the cheaper one and immediately they started talking in Cantonese about me being cheap and choosing that. It was very rude since they assumed that I did not understand. Furthermore, every time they talked to me, the tone was very degrading. After spending an hour there dying my hair (I chose a red color), they revealed it and the top of my head was a brassy orange while the bottom of my hair was a dark brown. It was two COMPLETELY different colors. They then went to blame it on me saying that since I dyed it before, the roots were black originally and the bottom wasn't, resulting in the difference in color. They were suppose to be a PROFESSIONAL hair salon. Things like these was something they should've accounted for. Then they were like "oh it's the same color. We just need to blow dry it." It evidently wasn't. After demanding that they fix it, they were very rude and insisted that the color was the same. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE if you are not Cantonese. They WILL NOT treat you with the same kind of respect. read more
