We get there, rap music blasting. It takes the worker about 2 minutes to come out, and when she does she just looks at us and says NOTHING. I literally had to greet her first and say hi, give us a second. She doesn't respond, just turns around and walks away. She comes back like 3 minutes later, no explanation of the menu, not asking us anything. I explain my order and she doesn't ask about toppings or anything. When I ask, she seems annoyed. The transaction is barely finished when a white family walks in, and without even handing me my spoon or napkin, she immediately turns away and greets them in this fake excited tone. Mind you, my friend next to me hasn't even ordered or paid yet. As my friend is paying, she is straight up ignoring her and having a whole conversation with the white family like we don't exist. The transaction isn't even over, and she doesn't say bye, doesn't say thank you, nothing. Just turns around like we're an inconvenience. Then the music suddenly changes to white pop music... like what is this??? I have NEVER experienced anything like this in my life, and for it to happen at an ice cream shop in Union, NJ, at the hands of another woman of color is NASTY. And to make it worse, the ice cream wasn't even special. We were literally about to go to Carvel but decided to support a small business instead... and it was horrible. So disappointing. read more

It's been a long time since I've been to magic fountain, but decided on a scorching hot day to come in just for some soft ice cream. A little on the pricier side but with inflation not really surprised. I paid cash, so I cannot speak to the credit card issues other people had mentioned. Ordered a plain soft ice cream, a soft ice cream with butterscotch and a milkshake and everyone of us walked out happy. That I will definitely be coming back for are their other flavors of hard ice cream and Italian ice, they look really delicious. The other positive? Employees were super friendly and welcoming. And the interior, probably looks very similar to how it did when I was younger. Came here right after eating at Tacos Mexican Grill which was about a block away. The place was bright and the ice cream spread had a lot of different flavors. The scoop-tender was very patient and let me try out a couple flavors before I committed. I ended up getting pistachio ice cream which was really good and also had pieces of pistachios. I got a small cup which comes with two generous scoops. Definitely enough. I'm throwing it out. It was watery with a weird texture. And yes, I've had a lot of vegan ice cream from multiple brands and places. Bad isn't the norm. My mom said her butter pecan left much to be desired and had too many pecans. Like you got more nuts than ice cream in your bite. She picked a bunch out I'd tried to blend the vegan ice cream with some almond milk and the attached pic is the result. It was congealed like it had a lot of gums and lecithin in it. I've been going to this place since I was a child, and I've always loved coming in. However, I was disappointed to see they've now joined the bandwagon of passing labor costs and credit card fees onto their customers. I don't mind tipping--I've worked as a server and bartender, so I understand the importance of it. If you make me a sandwich, I'll gladly tip you. But this type of mandatory tipping feels more like a way for owners to avoid paying fair wages, ultimately letting the rich get richer. And now, on top of that, there's a $1 fee for credit card transactions? In this economy? That's excessive. Most places charge a small percentage if they pass on fees--not a flat rate. I wrote to them suggesting they should clearly post the credit card fee, and they replied that the sign is by the first register. I didn't see it. I suggested they display it outside or at least on their website, where people can see it before they decide to go in. Honestly, a $1 fee for using a credit card isn't reasonable. Unfortunately a miss! For a medium cup of soft icecream I was charged a small cup fee plus a vegan fee, and a $1.00 charge for a non cash payment. Over $8 for a medium soft cup, no toppings, that was not filled to its' width of the medium sized cup. I do not like the principal of not being charged for the item ordered- a standard order of a medium cup. I prefer creamier, thicker soft serve, & feel my purchase would be better appreciated by friendlier employees at other icecream places in & around town. They may have been re stocking, but there were also many, perhaps twenty, cases of hard icecream in the cardboard boxes sitting out the day of my visit. As a customer I like to see the icecream in the temperature controlled freezers ready for serving. I brought my daughter here after her softball game Friday night. It was somewhat busy but the staff appeared to be keeping on top of things so the wait was literally only a few minutes. It actually took my daughter awhile to decide on a flavor. They have a wide assortment of flavors so it's easy to get caught up in trying to make an ice cream choice. My daughter decided on mint chocolate chip ice cream in a chocolate-sprinkled cone. I completely forgot to ask about any dairy-free options the shop may offer however, the young lady who assisted us and took my daughter's order asked if I was going to have anything. When I responded "I'm allergic to cows milk and that the ice cream would rip my stomach apart" her silence may have very well confirmed they don't have dairy-free options but I certainly wouldn't wholeheartedly dismiss it unless I knew for sure. The town center "revitalization" in Union created designated street parking spots along Stuyvesant Ave., so you have another parking option whenever the back lot is packed (...and it almost always is since Magic Fountain shares the lot with a nail salon and a popular barbershop). I stopped by with family today and we were able to sample a few items. ICE CREAM: Nut Bar: I'm glad I checked their FB page because I found out these were brought back to the menu just a few days ago! It's a vanilla ice cream bar with nuts then dipped in chocolate. The chocolate shell was the perfect thickness, while the vanilla ice cream was creamy and sweet. It's smaller than I thought, but really good. We also tried the... Royal Fudge Brownie Sundae w/ Vanilla Soft Serve: The ice cream has a good sweetness, is creamy, and didn't have an overly strong vanilla flavor; it was just right. Soft serve is a great choice for this, but keep in mind that it melts quickly. The bottom layer is a large brownie slice. Chopped almonds and fudge were the toppings. Waffle Cone Sundae w/ Hard Vanilla: Similar to the soft serve, the hard vanilla ice cream was just as creamy, wasn't overly sweet, and was also topped with a generous amount of toppings--specifically fudge and peanuts. The waffle cone was fresh and was dipped in chocolate. SERVICE: Everyone here is friendly, including the gentleman who I believe is the owner. I also appreciate that they list their flavors and the different treats they offer on their website. Also, I love how the place is well lit and has plenty of tables; there's outdoor seating, too! Home made ice cream. Need I say more? Let's start out with the perks especially those with kiddos. There's parking! Plenty of outdoor seating but limited inside. Jo was simply the best. She knew every flavor and was extremely helpful. Simply just as sweet as the ice cream! They have a variety of flavors, some ices and soft serve. Our picky kids ate their entire ice creams (that never happens) and the adults enjoyed the creamy flavors like chocolate chip brownie, cannoli, banana and maple walnut. Eh. Ice cream to me was ok but nothing amazing. Not as rich and creamy as I expected. Some if the flavors were off putting like the raspberry taste like medicine. The mint chocolate chip was more like spearmint. The chocolate was basic meaning I could have walked in Giant nearby and gotten the same thing. I finally settled for the flavor of the month "brownie fudge" and cherry vanilla. Both were again ok. Once I started eating my waffle bowl I realized none of of there flavors really are rich and creamy compared to Vanilla Bean Creamery in Cranford. Something is missing. The cherry vanilla taste more like plain vanilla even with the mix ins. The brownie fudge was tasty when you ate the brownie but a spoonful of the chocolate ice alone was lackluster.
