brought an antique hall way mirror to fred at magic touch. He was quite knowledgeable about approximately how old it was and we agreed to repair and restore it. He told me he learned the business from his father and it is quite apparent that freds son is now also repairing furniture. They take a lot of pride in the product and craftsmanship that is put into the project. They take some time so dont expect a job to be done in a week or two. However expect to be satisfied. And even better at a fair price. He gives ideas on how to take care of the end product. he is careful to help maintain the value of your antique. I recently had Magic Touch Furniture repair (MT) to refinish my kitchen cabinets. The service that I expected and promised was not what I received. My expectations were that the cabinets would be sanded to remove the old stain, cleaned, new stain applied and finished with a semi gloss lacquer. All nicks, dings, and scratched would be repaired or removed by sanding. What I received was as follows: Little to no sanding was done. Cleaning was not done. Trim was installed with flat head nails instead for finished nails. Trim pieces were painted when they should have been stained. Cabinet doors would not close. New cabinet doors were installed unevenly because no measuring was done. Glass inserts in the cabinet doors are coming apart. Lacquer finish is not consistent throughout the kitchen. Even though some of the items were fixed after much complaining, not all were fixed. The 30 years of experience that I heard about each day that MT was in my home, did not show in the quality of the work. I had to continually ask for things to be fixed. They did such a great job refinishing my kitchen table. It had so many dings, marks, and a huge scorch mark from a hot pot. It looks like a brand new table now! And the service was very fast. He said it would take 2 weeks but it was actually ready in a week. read more

I hired Magic Touch to paint my kitchen cabinets about two years ago. In discussing the process, Fred talked about the sanding, and that it would be about a 7 step/layer process. He asked for an initial payment of 2000 dollars, (the total bill was over 5000). We paid him the money. He said it would take about 2 weeks total. The day they started he came with his son, and had his son just start putting Kiltz on the cabinets. In a few days Fred came and started painting over the Kiltz. I asked about the sanding, he said they did not need it. Then he took a piece of sand paper and scuffed up some areas. I did not see him for weeks once the boxes were painted. All the contents of my cabinets were in my dining room, and various places. After about 3 weeks, in phone calls he kept telling me it was the weather as to the delay for painting the doors.drawers. I did not understand that at all, since he said he had a shop. After 5, yes 5 weeks, he called me on a Monday morning, said he wanted to come pick up the final payment and would put the doors/drawers on that day. He was supposed to remove two doors on an upper cabinet and patch the holes for the interior shelving inside of it, so i could use it as open display area. He did not patch the holes, until i said something, which then he only patched the front holes, and you can easily still see them. The Monday he came for payment he said he needed to finish the job because he was going out of town. He was supposed to paint a shelf for this open area and put some nice trim on it. That Monday, he brought the shelf, (with cheap trim) and put it in the cabinet area. The shelf was still wet with paint. Like really wet! I paid him, without argument over the poor job and extended time frame, only to get him out of my house. Since this experience everytime I look at the chipped places in my cabinets, (because he did not seal them as he said he would), I have a very negative feeling. I did not do a review all this time because I had mixed emotions about being so negative publically. This morning as my husband and I discussed what to do about the cabinets, I realized that like me, Fred is probably telling folks how great of a job he will do on their cabinets, and if I had of read a review like I am writing I would have never hired him for that job. I originally called Fred because we had two bar chairs I wanted refininshed. He did those during the cabinet job, however, I wanted them walnut colored, and stressed I did not want any red tone stains. They are about as cherry colored as you can get them. So much so, I moved them to our basement because they do not match anything in our home. So we have had experience with Fred as a cabinet painter and furniture refinisher. I would not recommend Fred and Magic Touch for either. read more
