Fun and cheap improv show for a night out. Went on a Saturday night for the Armando Diaz Experience. It was pretty funny and got a lot of laughs from the audience. Space is small and intimate, was packed on a Saturday. Overall a great time. Only downside is there's only one bathroom, so ended up waiting a long time in line. But I think they let people to use the restroom at the bar next door as well.

I have been visiting this place for a few years now. I have taken classes here, had shows here, and watched shows here. Overall, it's really a gem in New York City. I can't count how many weekend nights when I had nothing to do, and I would just come here to spend an awesome night. If you ever consider coming here to watch a show. Friday and Saturday is the best since most of the actors have been playing for many years. They know what they are dong. However, if you come here on other nights, you might bump into a student show, and sometimes it can get kinda awkward lol. Overall, I recommend everyone to bookmark this place on their google map. Oh, if you're ever getting tired of waiting in the bathroom line. You can also go to the bar next door. Since the bar and the theater have been opening for so long. The bar knows that sometimes people who finish watching a show would come to their bar to take a piss lol haha.

Wow! Came here on a Sunday night to see 'Darkness Falls' and wow! It was funny and engaging! Loved how it was very emersive allowing the audience to be a part of the theater. I absolutely enjoyed it and would definitely be back. Magnet theater was very easy to find as it was my first time. Well done Magnet!

This was my first time seeing an improv comedy act live. We went here yesterday and there was an act from Chicago and Texas. My favorite act was Challenger from Chicago. Although they had some uncomfortable humor moments I liked the part of the act that included the unhappy girlfriend. These guys were hilarious - do girls really play with their hair every time they talk?! haha The theater is small, but worth the experience. It's a fair price for a nice comedy sketch. I would go here again. I believe they also have classes if you want to become an improv comic. I actually do improv speaking for toastmaster so seeing an entire act based on improv was pretty cool. They have a small drinks area but I would say grab a bite before coming if you are hungry otherwise make arrangements to eat afterwards. As this is not like a lounge, its more of a stop before or after eating.

I came here on Sat night for an improv show (Trike) and it was AMAZING. The two guys asked the audience to name the show. Someone shouted out "Raise the Bar" and the two actors crafted and improv show around this title. They seamlessly moved from scene to scene, reading each other's queues. It was crazy they made it up on the spot. Such a fun way to spend a Sat night. Recommend!!!

Trike is a MUST WATCH. NEW YORK TIMES CRITICS CHOICE.

This is one of the best places to watch improv shows. Sure, there's Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB). Sure, there's the People's improv Theater (P.I.T.). But I don't think those 2 other places got shyt on Magnet. Other than maybe a more well known name to the public due to publicized actors/actresses whom had trained there and became successful. Trike on Saturday nights are a MUST SEE SHOW. If you ever wanted to watch GREAT improv, that is the one to watch. New York Times raved about it and they did not disappoint. They also gets packed EARLY so arrive EVEN EARLIER for your tickets and to get a good seat as you would going to the movie theaters. They have an assortment of other shows ranging from musical improv (I'm not a big musical theater fan but if you are, this is not to be missed) and other house team improv team shows (one of which my teacher is in THE WEAVE). I'm also a student at the Magnet currently and I definitely do plan on staying the full course in order to try out for one of their house teams in the near future. Speaking of classes, it is easier to get classes here than over at UCB or the PIT which means you can learn without having to be wait listed into classes that you shouldn't have to wait list for. I really enjoy the classes here so for me this is a WIN WIN. I'm such a fan of this place. Come to a show or two. Take a class or two. I dare you not to be a fan after that. Chances of that? NIL.

    Also, art.

Joining this community is one of the best decisions I've made since moving to NYC. Seriously. Want to laugh? Want to meet warm, welcoming, hilarious people? Go take a class. In fact, go sign up for the FREE intro class right now - I'll wait: www.magnettheater.com/free-improv-class When I tell my "non-improv" friends to try it, they say that it sounds too scary. That they're not performers. That they're not funny. But seriously, none of that matters. I started taking improv as a way to "get out of my head," so to speak. Improv is great for that - the skills and ideas that the Magnet teaches are applicable to work, relationships, etc. And yeah, it's a bit scary... but it's so, SO much fun. Not ready to take a class? Check out a show! The Magnet has them every night of the week - improv, musical improv, sketch comedy, and storytelling.

The youth-hostel atmosphere of the waiting area paved the way for the performance.
    Fallopia T.

This place has a real youth-hostel atmosphere, and the crowd control is a pretty impressive display of efficient packing 'em in. I'm giving it two stars because the show I went to see was cancelled at the last moment and replaced with a different improv act. It was a Tuesday night and I was pretty pissed the guy I went to see wasn't showing. I got home after midnight and I doubt I would have gone out on a weeknight to see someone I didn't previously know of at all. Therefore, I'll update my review if I go here again.

The TL;DR version for those who have already made the decision to go: - Do shop designer sample sales to look just as chic as the daughters of the Middle Eastern elite and Asian jetset, but for 50-75% off retail price. (Download the Sample Closet app to get alerts on all ongoing and forthcoming sample sales.) - Do take advantage of classes offered by other New School programs. - Do apply to be an RA (Resident Advisor in the dorms) for the chance to get FREE HOUSING IN NYC. I REPEAT, FREE HOUSING. NO RENT, PEOPLE. (Also, your federal loans accrue less interest.) - Don't turn into one of those "Can't-Live-Without-NYC" New Yorkers. (Please refer to the excellent metaphor of self-imposed concentration camp victim and prison guard in the 1981 Louis Malle film, My Dinner With André.) 2. For those who may be on the fence about going: As a prospective undergrad, what attracted me most about Parsons --- besides its location in New York --- was its affiliation with The New School. This is one great advantage that Parsons has over other design schools that do not operate under the umbrella of a larger institution. Experimentation and crossing disciplines is an important part of the undergraduate learning experience. For my part, I took writing classes at Lang, filmmaking classes at the General Studies school, and had a bit part in a Lang theater production (SO much fun!). I also, with my team, won an award with LVMH and took advantage of the internship listings available exclusively to Parsons students, resulting in three years at a prestigious publications house. I humblebrag to make a point, which is that the possibilities and opportunities are endless IF YOU SEEK THEM. Otherwise, unlike a campus college, no one is going to reach out to you to offer you options, options that could turn into distractions that take you away from your studies. The Parsons experience is the city experience; you are very much a part of the fabric of New York, commuting and working and being broken into the crazy-busy life of a New Yorker just like the rest of its inhabitants. However, if you think that you need to study at Parsons --- or in the city, for that matter --- to get internships that will lead to jobs, that is not always the case. My first job out of college had nothing to do with my internships. And interestingly enough, my friends who went to schools in the city had more circuitous routes to their current jobs than friends who went to school out-of-state. These out-of-state friends didn't have any connections in high places; except for the ones in finance who were recruited at campus job fairs, the rest just applied persistently for their opportunities. The biggest con in my perception of The New School as an alumna is that it seems to operate more as a business and less as a school committed to the quality of its education. There are more adjunct and part-time instructors than full-time and many of them, I'm sorry to say, are incompetent and far too busy with their own careers aside from teaching to bother with their classes. (This would be marketed by the school as, "Learn from professionals who are connected to the real world," or something to that effect.) I suspect that whatever profit is being made is invested into its makeover in order to attract more students, and thus more money. As soon as I'd graduated, the school started calling me and MY PARENTS asking for donations! What gall! I assume selectivity rates are generally low, esp for international students who pay twice the already exorbitant tuition. If there's anything that my senior portfolio class taught me, it's that four years of design instruction does NOT drive good taste or basic design sensibilities into some students' heads. Even for a "to each, her own" kind of person like me, some of these final presentations were just downright embarrassing and did not justify the price tag on their education. I believe that true talent will find its way to opportunity, no matter which school you're coming from. You should consider Parsons only if you can afford it without taking from your middle-class parents' savings or from your future. Otherwise, consider a campus school where you can dedicate yourself wholly to your craft and enjoy being a kid for a little longer. You can apply for summer internships in the city and relish New York that way, without feeling burnt out.

Our daughter loves this place so our intention was to use our unused classes in the Fall when they re-opened but they were only willing to honor unused classes at 50% so we would have had to write them another large check with the risk of them getting closed again in the event of a second COVID wave. They said that they offered a summer option which was to cover unused classes but that didn't work for us schedule-wise. The Art Center a great place for kids but don't expect them to meet you halfway if an emergency pops up.
