Eventually some one came out from the back and seated us. The table cloth and the plate at my seat were dirty. They were completely under staffed which I could have over looked if the food was really excellent. We tried some real Indian food here. The food was great, especially the curry here. One kind of Indian bread called roti smelled so good, also for naan. The chicken madras was highly recommended, a little bit spicy but with many kinds of special smell of herbs, very tasty. I have been to Maharaja a number of times and I have been thinking of writing a review, so finally here it is. Maharaja is one of the few best places to have Indian food in the Wilmington area. In general there is a dearth of Indian restaurants around Wilmington more so good ones. We have become regulars here and visit at least once a month. My parents from India were visiting and even they enjoyed the food here. The staff is very friendly. We have tried their buffet and also ordered from the menu. The buffet has a good choice of dishes and the added bonus is they offer buffet on certain weeknights. A couple of times we have ordered from the menu and were not disappointed at all. After checking out 2 Indian restaurants on the same road, I decided (against my better judgement) to skip my favorite spot (A Taste of India) to check out the other two. Actually, 3. One is in the process of being opened. I will let you know when it's official. The other one didn't impress me at all after looking at their buffet. The third was the Maharajah. Yes, it's in a strip mall. The Host was very friendly and accommodating, however, the wait staff acted as if they were there against their will. The floors and the bathrooms were very dirty. I felt their food was average and their prices alot higher than most. My opinion, I'll skip this place and stay with my Favorite in Newark. PS: I'll do a review of the other restaurant when it opens. Please do yourself a favour and don't ever go to this place. The decor was outdated but I didn't mind that.. What was outrageous was the service and the food. Nobody had any semblance of what was happening and the food was APPALLING. It was stale, old and not well cooked at all. The spices were missing, there were some ridiculously made up dishes, the plates were chipped and scratched. I go there twice a month with my wife (who is vegetarian). Not my favorite kind of cuisine, but I do pride myself in expanding my horizons. I have no complaints about the food. It is BYOB, so heck, I even save a few bucks! The good food aside, I am disturbed with the disrepair and stench of the mens restroom. The toilet doesn't flush properly, the sink is filthy and it smells of rotting urine. The carpet outside of both restrooms is soiled. I wonder if something flooded back there? Recently becoming vegan, I reached out by phone to see vegan options for the lunch buffet. The restaurant was very cordial and knowledgeable about what exactly is in their food and Veganism. Let me begin by saying this is not the nicest place (decor), it's not quite a hole in a wall kind of joint but close. If you're looking for good Indian food this is the place. I've been to a lot of other places and the goat/lamb curry doesn't compare with Maharaja. The spices and spiciness is always on point. The chicken masala is also delicious. Plain and garlic naan is always good with the curries and masala. There's an onion chutney they have that is so addictive and goes well with the curries. The buffet has always been worth it for us, we definitely get more than what we would normally order. The lunch buffet is a joke. The food was poor quality. It lacks flavor and spice, bland chicken tikka masala. The tandoori chicken was cold on the buffet, hope I don't get sick. I mentioned this to the waiter and I saw him checking it with the back of his hand. No apologies or we will get you some fresh and hot to eat. The aloo dish was also cold. Decor is poor. A great variety, and closer to the food you used to get at 'A Taste of India' further up Kirkwood Highway before the ownership there changed a number of years ago.
