if I could give Dr. Mustafa a zero star review, I would. He is an egotistical, completely uncaring physician who for some reason is a "celebrity" in the gay community in DC (due to his involvement in the circuit party scene). During my appointment, he was unprofessional, dismissive and condescending. I never returned after that one appointment...and btw, his colleagues at the other medical practices in the same office building hold an equally low opinion of him as a person and as a physician. I would not recommend him to anyone, especially as there are other far more competent doctors who serve the gay community in DC. Stay away!!! read more

His front desk is the absolute, most unresponsive dis-service I have come across, anywhere -- whether a Doctor's, Dentist's, Department of Motor Vehicle's, Home Depot's, CVS's, etc. answering service. I'm effing flabbergasted. I have been calling this dis-service for years. I need to get a prescription refilled. No answer. No call back, either. I have left many, many voicemails. One week apart, or one hour apart. No on cares. I call this dis-service in spurts, when I need a prescription or to setup an appointment. Then I give up and call a specialist to get my prescription refilled. Or I think I've walked-in before to schedule an appointment. I mean, what on earth is going on at that front desk? I have been seeing Doctor Mustafa for 6 years now. So far, he is the best in the DMV! This comes from someone like me with several pre-existing conditions for which I have to go to see at least 3 other specialists in the city. My best experiences are with him and his team. I had a very negative experience with the man answering the phone at Dr. Mustafa's office. This man explained that he had been working for Dr. Mustafa's office "off and on" for thirty years, and that while the transfer of records I was inquiring about (from a previous treating physician) "could have" happened in one of his "off" periods, it "wasn't likely." He tried to blow me off completely when I requested he as Dr. Mustafa directly about the matter, and asked why I was being "so persistent." His tone was rude, as well. To schedule my recent appointment, I was put on hold for 6 minutes and once the woman returned, she spoke to me with blatant disdain. Looking for a relaxed, friendly doctor? Moody Mustafa is pretty damned laid back. When I see him he's usually in a Hawaiian shirt. Plus he's generally in good humor, which goes a long way to making up for the inevitable wait in the examining room. Dr. Moody is known in some circles as the Rock Doctor -- there are signed photos of famous musicians on the walls. But usually I am entranced looking at all the other photos, most of which Dr. Moody took himself. The staff at the office is very cool, and Dr. Moody's golden retrievers are usually lounging about. But is he any good? Hard for ME to say (I'm no doctor), but I can say he has been very thorough with testing, diagnosis, and follow-up of my high blood pressure. He's an internist and an hematologist, so you can be assured of thorough bloodwork. He's also involved in cutting edge HIV research. If you need an internist, but find going to the doctor to be way too stressful, give Dr. Moody a try. UPDATE 8/3/07: Just a shout-out of love to Dr. Moody -- I started coming down with a bladder infection today at around 3 -- today being a FRIDAY (wtf????) so I paged Dr. Moody, and he called in a prescription for some antibiotics to the 24-hr pharmacy for me. I've given up on ever thinking I'd get my medical records so now it's time for me to come clean about my experiences with Dr Mustafa. Initially, I thought he was great. He specializes in hematology so I was thrilled to have a PCP who could read my charts and know what he was talking about. He is also very complete on his physicals and instead of a those random nurses that take your BP and do a pre screening for your office visits, he has a medical student from GW write up a complete analysis so he can be better prepared to meet with you. I have grown increasingly frustrated with Dr. Mustafa and his office staff for many reasons over the past 2 years. You will wait 2-3 hours to be seen by him (I kid you not) and for what? A 5 minute review and chances are he'll send you to a specialist. I went to his office twice for a UTI and he kept saying the tests were negative. He never took the time to send it out to a lab and actually referred me to a psychologist because he thought it was "all in my head". 2 weeks later, I went to the ER and sure enough, UTI! The doctor at the ER explained that Dr. Mustafa should have run the test through the lab since many UTIs do not show up on the elusive dip stick. But even through this, I still continued to see him because I really loved his med students and felt they were the true stars of his office. I could continue to delve into my personal life with stories of how I felt Dr. Mustafa was not complete in his work as a doctor but there is a word limit on reviews. I will tell you that I don't feel he is compassionate as a doctor should be and he really misses some key points. His practice is more on fancy medicine such as B12 shots (which his own med student commented was useless), hair removal and botox. He is a celebrity in the DC community and I believe there is his focus. I decided to no longer be a patient and still have not received my medical records for my new PCP. I was told they would charge me $15 for them. I don't' even want all of them. Just one page would suffice (my last physical) but I have given up. I'd suggest trying another doctor. I have since moved from DC, but after I just had an amazing experience with a new dr, I felt compelled to write a review. I was wooed by cute dogs and excellent yelp reviews. For some reason the numerous calls (with no calls back) just to make an appointment didn't deter me. I arrived and the surely receptionist annoyed me, but I was just happy to be in a place that was fully of happy, tail wagging pups that made getting blood drawn down right lovely. My first apt I never saw the dr - just blood draw, etc as a part of an initial physical. The folks who helped out with that were all friendly and it was a decent experience. Did I mention I got to cuddle a golden while getting my blood drawn? Amazing. Then I came in for the followup and had a pretty good experience with Dr. M. A few months later, I had an actual medical need to discuss. I had to try pretty hard to get an apt, but still, i got past the surely receptionist once again. Only, what greeted me in the exam room was truly gross. The dr. was in a sweatshirt, unshaven and possibly hadn't brushed his teeth, or if he had, it was in coffee. All that would be fine if otherwise put together, but he simply was not. I genuinely felt like he rolled out of bed and into the exam room after a long night out on the town. I was really grossed out. I got the referral I came in for and left with no intention of ever returning. It just wasn't what you want from a medical service. Felt dirty and gross. To sum up: Terrible front desk service, cute dogs (one star) and decent support (students and nurses bring in another star); and a dr. who doesn't feel it's always necessary to show up to work clean and presentable. read more

This place is a joke. I was consulted by a third year medical student without supervision !!! She had just started her third year given that we are at the beginning of the school year. The doctor did come to say hello but that was all. My second visit was better. I came for my physical. This time a resident came and took the data and the doctor spent more time with me and answered all the questions I had. I know the dog is cute and all but is it sanitary to have a dog in a medical facility that is not there to serve any purpose? read more

My last visit to Dr. Moody was surreal and unsettling. Upon arrival, the assistant (I forget her name now) administered a BMI test, reviewed lab work, and performed auscultation. When Dr. Moody entered he reviewed the lab work and then he and his assistant left with instructions for me to strip to my underwear for what I assumed would be the testicular and reflex exams. I sat on the edge of the table for 20 cold minutes waiting in my skivvies before the doctor and his assistant returned. He asked me to lie down and then proceeded to perform an auscultation which I thought was odd because his assistant had just done so. But, she had made a mistake obtaining my BMI, so I assumed he was doing it again to be thorough. During what became a very lengthy exam, he struck up a conversation with his assistant about a recent theft of his prescription pad and a forgery for prescription painkillers. I thought this inappropriate to discuss in front of a patient, but it's an unorthodox office. He concluded their conversation by saying, 'A person can go to jail for that, you know', then put the stethoscope on my heart and brought his face very close to mine. We stayed like that in silence for several moments. It was incredibly uncomfortable. Dr. Moody then yanked me up by my arm and off the table onto my feet with a very aggressive dismissal. Why did I need to strip to my underwear for an auscultation? No testicular or reflex exams were administered. I'm a bit slow so it was only after I recounted this strange experience to friends and family that they pointed out that I was probably being given a 'lie detector test' by Dr. Moody. Whether or not that's true, this experience revealed a lack of professionalism that is unacceptable in a physician. It's never okay to bully a patient. Did he do this to everyone? Or was I singled out because I was new to the office and I don't fit the DC mold having a beard and tattoos? I would have been more than happy to help by answering questions for the police. Now I have to find a new doctor! Again! I found my way to this office via Dr. McMahon. He was the best doctor I've ever had. I felt very sad when he passed, not because I lost a good doctor, but because we all lost a good soul. I am not mourning the loss of Dr. Moody and I would counsel others to look elsewhere. read more

Relaxed, friendly and attentive -- having a doctor you trust doesn't seem to be very common these days -- Moody actually cared for a friend of mine a few years back -- and his diagnosis was ALWAYS spot on when others missed the mark, plus he went above and beyond in the quality and level of care. He is so generous with his time and spirit. It's like having a close family friend that doubles as your doctor. I haven't loved my doctor since I was a little kid. In the last 12 years, I have had 3 doctors and none of them seemed to actually care about me as a person and didn't seem very vested in my well being. After just a couple of visits to see Moody, I feel like I have a very qualified and caring doctor in my corner -- and that is a precious commodity. I started this review a couple of years ago, and am just now posting because Yelp reminded me. After visiting Dr. M, I learned from a neurologist that I had an environmental trigger and have been migraine-free for about two years. The short of it: Quick scheduling; the interns; big, friendly dog; nice atmosphere. Jimmy was Grinch-like; same/next day policy for sick patients is false; prescribes meds to patients without seeing them; no forewarning about the dog, which is not hypoallergenic. The whole story: I made an appointment with Dr. Mustafa after I began to experience a resurgence in severe, recurring migraines, the debilitating kind. I decided to see him after learning that his partner, who is a neurologist, was out of town. Dr. M is a hematologist. I made my appointment on a Tuesday for Friday afternoon. Mind you, their office advertises a same day/next day policy for sick patients. I told Jimmy, the receptionist who made the appointment, that I was a new patient and I was experiencing severe, recurring migraines. Later, I would learn that he had made no mention of this to anyone who might need to know. The morning of my appointment, I woke up with an excruciating migraine, as I often do. I mustered the strength to call (a difficult feat with a migraine so bad) a half-hour before my appointment to say that I would be late. I promised to be there a half-hour after my scheduled time. I arrived at the time I'd promised (miraculously), and waited 10 minutes for Jimmy to come to the desk. He gave me the new patient forms and reminded me several times that I was late. At one point, Jimmy called me up to the desk to ask me why I was late, even though I'd told him on at least three separate occasions. He said he'd have to ask Dr. Moody if he still *wanted* to see me, walked off, and never said another word to me until it was time for him to go (more on this later). I waited about 30 mins to see the doctor, not knowing whether Dr. M would see me. I noticed that staff frequently left the desk unattended for long periods of time, forcing patients to wait for help. During this time, the music started skipping, which aggravated my migraine when it had began to subside. There was also a woman there who complained loudly about her myriad health problems. Not their fault, but still a nuisance. Otherwise, the ambiance is nice. A window provides natural light in the waiting room and the artificial lights are kept low. And though I find his photography skills wanting, I thought Dr. M's show of personality (he was wearing a Caps jersey with his name on the back and jeans) and hobby made him less robot doctor, more human confidant doctor. Too bad I would not be able to verify this. Dr. M did not see me, and an intern--Leah*-- conducted my entire visit. Leah told me they would have to break my visit into three parts (a pre-physical, bloodwork, then follow up), all billed as separate visits. I protested the ripoff and told her to try again. She left our private room four times, returning with different solutions each time. I ended up getting the pre-physical and blood work done that day. She gave me a single-dose sample of an rx drug, and told me to come back in a week to discuss the results. When I pointed out how that would've left me without a remedy for 6 days, she gave me a week's prescription. But she couldn't answer critical questions about the drug (side effects, cost, doctor's relationship to the company). Since Dr. M was not available, I had to search elsewhere. I stayed in the office to do this, since I would have otherwise had to wait until Monday if I needed to change the prescription. While I was on the phone with my insurance company, Jimmy abruptly booted me out of the office, saying, "I hate to roll you out of here but I have to get to the gym." It was 2:15 p.m. and they were closed, but he didn't have to talk to me that way. I had not been difficult or fussy, and I felt disrespected. I thought the intern did a great job since Dr. M was "busy" and Jimmy had not told anyone that I was actually sick. Though she was nervous and things kept changing, I was patient and comfortable because I felt like she was listening to me and trying to get a good solution. I don't know if Dr. M and Jimmy the Grinch meant to teach me a lesson, but there's no room in a doctor's office for reality show grudges and bad attitudes. In all, my visit took two-and-a-half hours. I have not filled the prescription because after taking the sample, I felt my throat swell and chest tighten, the latter a severe symptom that required immediate medical attention (and the doc office was closed). Dr. Moody saved my life. Got your attention, huh? I've been seeing him for a few years, always love the Disney memorabilia and his dog wandering in and out. Earlier this year, I'd been suffering from gallstones and even a trip to the emergency room wasn't really taken seriously (by the ER doc) - and when I called the surgeon they recommended, they said they couldn't see me for 2 weeks. I went to see Dr. Moody and they personally called the surgeon's office for me and got me in a few days later. Afterward, the surgeon told me what rough condition my gallbladder had been in and how it was good that we didn't wait any longer. Which they would have, if it hadn't been for Dr. Moody's office. The one complaint I do have is one of the receptionists was always super rude and snippy. Which seemed like a huge mistake, since usually people are calling in a semi-vulnerable position if they're sick. I'd dock a star for that, but I haven't seen him the last couple times I've been in so maybe they rectified that/realized his lack of people skills. read more

I haven't been for a physical since my pediatrician--that said, Dr. Moody and his awesome staff were a great transition into internal medicine of adulthood. Like Dr. Moody himself, his staff was warm, relaxed, and comical--most of them were wearing jeans, and seemed to genuinely enjoy working in the office. And-this is a first at any medical office, I must say-there was a giant golden retriever sleeping in the hallway! Seriously, who doesn't like dogs? Unless you're allergic, dogs always cheer people up (see puppy cam), and automatically made my doctor's experience more relaxed. Although I waited about a half an hour to see the doctor himself, I was entertained by the Disney memorabilia (mostly autographed, with many of the pictures taken by the Doctor himself!) in the examination room. Plus, the GW Resident who checked me out at first was really awesome and seemed really excited about his work--even though I'm probably not the most interesting medical specimen he's ever seen. Dr. Moody himself seemed very relaxed, knowledgeable, and passionate about his work, which made me feel extremely comfortable in an unfamiliar setting. I had Doctor Moody as my general practitioner or so I thought, every time I went to see the man I would see a student instead. It is it okay if it was only once every so often but it was not once every so often it was every time. However he would stick his head in and tell the student which room to go to the next. And I personally am not a dog lover which would be a big benefit if you are going to choose this Doctor as yours. Golden retrievers While beautiful dogs I really don't want their hair all over me, and neither does my cat. One the office staff members at the front desk, a male, is rude beyond belief, and acts like such a diva. He's the type of person who acts like the world revolves around them. After I went to this Doctor and got over the novelty of how cute his office is I decided to go to a real medical practitioner to get my needs met. Dr. Moody is one of the best! He's relaxed and always does what he can to see you right away --even if it's last minute. I agree with all the posts on this site--he's tops! My favorite experience was once a few years ago I thought I had Strept throat...I didn't but I told Moody that it felt like I was swallowing glass shards. He immediately wrote me a prescription for lidocane and maloxx...sounds weird but when I gargled with that stuff my throat was numbed. Dr. Mustafa is such a kind doctor and very thorough. I wasn't feeling too well in the morning and the office got me in the same way to see Dr. Mustafa. When I told him I was surprised he saw me the same day he said this was his number one policy that the sick get seen first. I really appreciate a doctor who understand that when someone doesn't feel well that's a priority. This is unlike any doctor's office I've ever been to. The office is very personalized with photographs of Golden Retrivers, a few landscapes, and Disney. There's a lot going on when you go with and it's very busy to the eye. The most memorable part of this office is Marco, Dr Mustafa's dog. Although I hear he misbehaves a lot, it is so nice to see a dog. It made my whole day so much better. Dr. Moody is hands down the best primary care doctor I've ever had. I have never felt more comfortable, cared for, and listened to in a doctors office, and I am so grateful to be a patient of his. I've been a patient since 2008, and it's clear from the moment you walk into the office that this place is different. It's bright and colorful, there is peppy music playing, and the walls are decorated in pictures and memorabilia from Dr. Moody's personal collection. His dog is usually wandering around as well (in the early days it was Chester, but he has passed, and now it's Carlo) which makes some patrons uncomfortable, but I happen to love it. Aside from the lighter mood that seems to permeate this place, both Dr. Moody and his colleague, Dr. O'Shalim, give patients an extraordinary amount of time and attention. Yes, I often wait a little while before being taken into the exam room, but when I finally get in there I am always allowed to ask all of my questions (very important because I am super anxious) and I am always listened to and responded to. I've also always felt that Dr. Moody and Dr. O'Shalim are very thorough--they'll suggest follow ups, testing, and treatments to ensure everything is ship shape. Because of the proximity to GW med school there are often interns in the office, but even if the initial consult is with one, the doctors are always brought in for the actual diagnosis and treatment. A word to new patients: the receptionists can seem a bit abrupt but they are all lovely people. They have tons to do and will get you in if they need to, so just be nice to them even if they seem to cut you off. They soften up eventually! If I have one minor complaint, it's that I always have to call myself to inquire about test results rather than someone from the office calling me. But this is a small annoyance for the trade off of great personal attention and having a doctor that remembers me. read more

I haven't actually seen the Mood-master himself but gosh darn it, I like his office. I like it. I like it a lot. Even though I was passed from one individual to the other, all his staff was very easy and fun to talk to. The dog, on the other hand, would not give me any love. What the F! His office is very eclectic and filled with Disney memorabilia. Before Disney products go to Disney heaven, they get dropped off at Dr. Moody's where they'll have a second life. The office I got put in had a butt load of Mickey Mouse stuff animals just chilling in the freaking corner. On the ground! The Disney music blasting also gave me a feeling like I was in some sick Clockwork Orange dimension, but after awhile, I was like, this is GREAT! The adults in the waiting room acting indifferent and nonchalant are the ones that are twisted. Get up and dance people, it's the Happiest Place on Earth. (Oh Lord, I can't believe I just said that. Dr. Moody is one of the best doctors I have had in my life. He is funny, attentive, and cares about his patients. He takes his time in sitting with you and listen to what you have to say. He even replies to emails sent to him by his patients. What doctor does that??? The office is very pleasing. The decoration comprised of Hollywood memorabilia makes you feel more relaxed in being at a doctor's office. It is not the typical doctor's office you can find. Dr. Mustafa has been my doctor for years, and I wouldn't change. In fact, a few years ago, when my insurance changed, I paid out-of-network expenses for a year, until I could switch to another plan that he was in. I trust him with my life. Being a teacher myself, I respect that he is helping to train local medical students. Though sometimes it feels a bit odd to be interviewed at the start of the visit by a med student, Dr. Mustafa always comes in to follow up. I'm amazed at how much time he spends with me. First ever review. I felt compelled to write after reading Ann's comments. Dr. Mustafa is has been my Dr. for 6 years. I actually started visiting his office as a Pharma Sales Rep. As A Rep you get the chance to witness firsthand how offices function from patient care to billing to the willingness of Dr. and staff to embrace new ideas and treatments. So many times I would simply ask people, "of all the DC Drs, how did you pick him" when people would tell me the name of their Dr. Well let me tell you that Dr. Mustafa is not just one of the best Drs. in the DC area, he is also one of the most trusted by his colleagues. He served as chief resident during his time at GW Hospital and is remembered by many for his knowledge and adeptness dealing with his underlings. Today his practice still takes in Medical Students. Watch the care that he takes with these young individuals, his patience and good nature are boundless. As my physician, I have never waited more that 15 or 20 minutes in his waiting room and I have always had assistance scheduling last minute appointments. Dr. Mustafa is not Cinderella and would come in somewhere behind your average ugly step sister in a beauty contest. His looks are somewhat that your average truck driver. He is quick to laugh and always ready with a jesting quip. But most importantly he pays attention. When he enters the exam room his attention is on me his patient. I never feel like he is rushing to leave or annoyed with any extra questions to answer. So Ann, let him roll out of bed (he lives a block away) and slosh a cup of Joe over his teeth as he slogs to his office. Let him throw on one of his trademark Hawaiian or Bowling or parking attendant shirts. Let him sit down in front of me with yesterdays stubble, because I have total trust and confidence in him. I've been a patient of Dr. Mustafa since 2006 after years of not having health insurance. I have probably referred 20 people to his office since then without any of them switching out. The GW students have been great - really over 5+ years, it's amazing how all of them I met have been very very good. The best thing about his office is the thing you need when you're really feeling ill: they will see you that day. It may take a while, it may be only 5 mins, but go/call early and they will see you to get that prescription or referral you need. Sure beats my experience with other DC doctors: 2-week advance appointments (when you're already feeling better) or worse, leaving a message that doesn't get returned. However, in recent years, I find the office has slipped a bit (but still above average!). I find I spend more time in the waiting room than before, for scheduled appointments. Referrals are provided, but without required insurance documentation. Copies of lab results are requested, but not available when promised. Still, it's been 5 years and I have yet to hear of a better alternative in DC! read more

True story...I started going to Dr. Mustafa after a friend referred me to him because I hated every doctor I ever went to, mostly because I cannot stand the lack of "care" in medicine these days. As a point of reference, I have been to the best doctors in the world by technical reference and I currently serve on the board of a nationally known medical center. I mention this because I think it will frame my comments with qualification. In the beginning, I went to Dr. Mustafa for the normal, everyday stuff...colds, annual physicals, etc. Two years ago I had a major life changing event. In less than eight weeks I lost 35 pounds due to stress and anxiety. I went to Dr. Mustafa in desperation as I was spiraling down physically, unable to function. True to all of the other experiences I had with Dr. Moody, he provided excellent physician care. More importantly, Dr. Moody delivered palliative care coupled with excellent technical care. He, quite literally, saved my life. He demonstrated a compassion that you rarely still find in medicine these days. No pretenses, no b.s. Just an honest, direct and compassionate physician who cares about the quality of care he provides. I would refer him to anyone who needs a physician. He is the perfect combination of human and technical expertise. And his staff? Excellent too! read more

I just had my first few appointments here after calling at least 15-20 general practice doctors in a desperate quest to find one in DC that was actually accepting new patients. Not only was I able to see Dr. Mustafa for a physical a week after I called, but I was also extremely impressed with my appointments there. I received what was certainly the most thorough physical I've ever had. They have you do your physical in 2 parts - you first come in for tests, and then you have to come back the next week to meet with the doctor. A little inconvenient, but I appreciated being able to sit down with a doctor to go over the results. He went into a ton of detail about my stats, gave me tips, and took as long as I needed to answer questions and address issues. Super friendly and nice. The office is eclectically decorated and full of (slightly eccentric) personality. And I loved petting Dr. Mustafa's gorgeous dog! When I first moved to Washington DC in 2006 I spent time researching various doctors, and Dr. Mustafa, (better known as Moody), quickly topped the list of candidates. After my first visit, I was sold. Dr. Moody always had time for me, to catch up both as his patient, as well as a personal level. He has a wealth of knowledge, born of experience, and has always treated me well, and more importantly, honestly. I have always found his office staff to be friendly and accommodating, even at trying times, and if all else fails, the resident dogs are always willing to provide some comfort. His office also offers the convenience of many on-site procedures and tests. He is active in the community, and the constant presence of medical students shows me that he also cares about giving back to his profession. When I left DC and moved back to Northern Virginia, I switched back to my prior doctors, leaving Moody's office behind. And while I very much like and respect my local family doctors, I quickly regretting making the change. So much so that I switched back to Moody with the satisfaction that the benefits offered by his office far outweigh the distance. I switched to Dr. Mustafa about a year ago after spending hours at the waiting room of my old doctor even when I had an appointment, which would take weeks to get. I've only seen Dr. O'Shallum so far (not sure if I spelled his name right), not Dr. Moody himself except at the end of my physical. I like Dr. O'Shallum, he's really honest and doesn't overprescribe, which can be frustrating when you hear that medicine won't help and you just need to "drink a lot of fluids", but that's better than taking antibiotics when you don't need them. The experience of scheduling an appointment is MUCH better than at my old Dr as well. They actually answer their phones (which is a surprisingly rare characteristic for DC Dr. offices) and if you're sick you can get an appointment usually in a day or so. And when I come in with an appointment I don't spend a lot of time waiting in the waiting room and Dr. O'Shallum himself comes out to get me. At my last place I would spend about an hour in the waiting room and then another 45 minutes in the examination room waiting for the Dr. Plus, last time I was there they were playing the Glee soundtrack! I should mention, this place definitely has some character (you can read about the celebrity photos and disney prints in some of the other reviews). Overall I'd recommend them! read more

I've been seeing Dr. Mustafa for about 3 years and don't have any complaints. I've also had good experiences with seeing Dr. Oshalim. I'm happy to see that when I call I no longer feel incompetent as it seems as though the receptionist who was usually very rude on the phone is no longer there. I'm in healthcare so I know how to talk about this stuff, I don't need a verbal eye roll when I call for an appointment. The nurse who did my EKG was great and knew her stuff. The phlebotomist did a great job with minimal discomfort. Everyone seems happy with their job and I like that they take on medical students and let them do the interview but don't leave the Dr-ing to them which from personal experience should be extremely scary to any patient. Overall, I like this place. I think I'll stay for a while. read more

I'm a fan of Dr. Moody. When I actually see him, I like his personality and his demeanor. He seems like a chill dude who knows his shit. I'd recommend him. If you're looking for an all-around pleasant experience, however, consider these thoughts I've had on the practice on M St.: 1) People love the dog thing. And I freaking love dogs myself. I do find it a little unclean and unprofessional in a medical setting, however. I mean, it's a long haired dog. It sheds. There is hair on the floor. If you're even vaguely OCD (which is still a strong term to describe me, I think), it might be a little disconcerting. 2) Ads for botox and Vitamin B shots prominently displayed on counter. I have discussed this with friends of mine in the medical field. They say that unfortunately this is what doctors have to do to get by these days. I find this most unfortunate and a little unsettling. I don't feel that these things are in the best interest of a patient's health. 3) Prescription-happy. I have gone in twice simply to get prescriptions. I saw Dr. Moody's partner both times. He was very happy to prescribe me exactly what I asked for, including valium, sleeping pills, and beta-blockers. Luckily, I am not a drug addict, because the doctor asks me nothing about myself, does not converse with me to even see if i'm crazy. He has no idea how sparingly (or how much) i actually use these medications. 4) I am really unimpressed with the front desk staff. They must be totally under-staffed and over-worked. Usually when you call you get voicemail, and usually the voicemail box is full. Especially if it is for billing. And usually you never get a call back. Ive been trying to resolve a billing issue (where I am owed about $70) for almost a year now. I am so clear, so concise, so polite, and so thorough with them, but I cannot get my issue resolved. I tried to resolve this on the telephone for a while, to no avail. Then I received an email (from a yahoo account), so I tried to resolve by email, to no avail (whoever emailed me from her personal yahoo account never replied to my reply). So I went back to the phone, to no avail. (voicemail box full, or the person who handles this issue isn't there etc) So then I tried a very clearly written letter that very clearly describes the actions that needed to be taken, and I send by mail. What happens? They call me and leave a voicemail saying they understand I have a billing issue. I call back -- and phone tag begins again. Finally, I think if I walk in and talk to them, that would be best. So I walk in and am met with a woman who was very short with me. I kept my calm and patience - explained the issue in three different ways till she relented from her position and said, "Oh -- I see." After fifteen minutes of tapping at keyboards and pulling different documents... she was still unable to help me. The person who could help me, she said, was not in and would get back to me. Needless to say, this never happened. I was never able to recoup my $70. read more

Terrible office. I've only seen Dr. mustafa once, the other times I've seen some mediocre younger 'doctor' more concerned with himself than me, the patient. I had gotten a concussion 2 days earlier in West Virginia and went in on the Monday to make sure everything was ok. At first, the doctor seemed concerned and ordered a ct scan, but when I called the next day to request additional information as requested by the hospital. The office wasn't helpful and when i said forget it I'm not getting it , they seemed perfectly ok letting me not. Terrible doctors office. If you're looking for people who care about you, look elsewhere. I really implore you to look elsewhere. I didnt even mention here how they made me wait 50 minutes past my appointment time. read more

I've had some positive experiences with Dr. Mustafa, partly due to the medical students on staff, who conduct solid intake interviews at most appointments. But at a recent appointment, the medical student assigned to me first had trouble taking my blood pressure and then hurt me while drawing my blood. He ultimately decided not to record my blood pressure at all. There was no supervision for the student. When the doctor told him to draw my blood, he clearly hesitated, but came back with the vials. The doctor had left the room. He first asked if I had any good-looking veins. He had trouble finding a vein on my elbow - though a nurse was able to find one right away - and decided to draw from my wrist, where my veins are very close to the skin. It was abnormally painful, as I told him. When he withdrew the needle after filling one vial, blood spilled onto my jeans and I became dizzy, which is not standard for me. I've had a large bruise and a feeling of some tingliness in my arm since. Dr. Mustafa did not check back in with me at any point. He was strolling around the office with a Red Bull, asking others in the office who was going to such & such a show that night & making (negative) comments in the hallway about patients loud enough that I overheard without intending to. The student is learning, of course. He was generally kind, helpful, and apologetic after the fact and during the rest of the appointment. I also felt comfortable with my overall diagnosis. But I do think that either the students may need more supervision or that there should be some disclaimer or information beforehand about what care you'll receive from who. Drawing blood seems like it should be the nurse's task, but if it's not, the students need to be trained. I thought it was odd that the blood was being drawn from my wrist, and it was quite painful, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt when really I shouldn't have. He needed a nurse or someone in there to supervise / coach him. So, be aware of this situation in this practice, and be prepared to advocate for yourself if a student seems unsure. Also, be prepared for club music in the waiting room. On the up side, I appreciate that I've been able to get into the practice swiftly and appreciate the thorough physical and intake process. Worst experience with a dr. ever. I went in for my physical and spoke with the Dr. and the student who examined me about a lump in my breast. I asked for a referral to get a mammogram, and they told me to get a list of facilities covered by my insurance from the front desk. Front desk took FOREVER to find something, so I asked if I could just find something through my own insurance, and they said yes. Did this, and when I called and asked him to fax through my prescription for a mammogram, Dr. Moody refused. By this point I had started experiencing breast leakage. Moody said he wanted me to come in for another appointment with him -- God knows why -- even though I had an appointment for a mammogram already set up. The reason? he hadn't written down in his notes the fact that we discussed a mammogram. And the response of the front desk? "What you want me to do about it? You have to come in for another appointment." This is one of the scariest things I have ever gone through, and their only response was "And? What you want me to do about it?" I will definitely be looking elsewhere and recommending that everyone find a doctor who will work with them to address their health needs -- because God forbid Moody forget to write anything down in his notes. read more

I've been to this office three separate times in over 4 years and have officially decided to move on. On top of the rude front desk and meeting with med students more than the doctor. I have learned from several other doctors that Dr. Mustafa and his staff test for unecessary items and then bill you for them. This contributes to insurance rates being so high. Even if your insurance is covering everything a 30 year old healthy woman should not be getting 1.) EKGs 2.) Breath/Inhale tests 3.) Asking the quesiton "do you ever feel you can't get out of bed, can't face the day?" does not count as a preventative psych eval/behavioral emotional test. 4.) On top of other minor billing items like "insertion of a needle" I've discussed with several other doctors and PAs and all of them reviewed my bill and were shocked. On top of that, most of them did not understand why I would go for two separate appointments and only speak to the actual doctor for 10 minutes. I will be looking for another doctor immediately and would recommend the same for others! read more

I used to really like Dr. Moody. I started seeing Dr. Moody back in 2005 and didn't have to see him too often thankfully, but when I did, I was pleased with the attention and time he took to listen to me. His staff was very pleasant and it was by far the most interesting doctor's office I had ever been in - the artwork on the walls, the photography, the DISNEY - it made one feel completely at ease. Plus, there are office dogs - anyplace that has dogs is a good place by me! I then left the DC area for a few years and returned to Dr. Moody in 2009 for a full physical. I let it pass that I had come back because there was an issue and they could not draw my blood the day of my appointment. I had to fast all morning too for NOTHING - which did not make me happy! I was slightly annoyed that I had to pay an additional co-pay, but let it go, because I had gotten good treatment in the past. When I came back in to discuss my results with Dr. Moody, I was pleased to see I got an all clear. I discussed some questions with him, which he took the time to respond to - however, he came down pretty hard on me about my weight. Yes, I could stand to lose 20 lbs - however, I am in the normal range for my height/weight - and while I skew closer to "overweight" than "underweight" - it's not like I am right on the edge either. Again, no issues with the fact that sure, in an ideal world, I would get to the gym 3-4 times per week for 60 minutes or so - but I do the best I can. I can handle a doctor recommending a shed a few - most of us should, but this where things got dicey for me. After questioning me on whether or not I understood how I gained weight (ummmm...eating more and not exercising enough?) and I explained how I have an office job whereas I used to have a more active job, so I was sure that contributed - he talked to me like I was an idiot. He also then pushed me to try this liquid shake diet that they sell in the office and that I could meet (at extra cost) with their nutritionist who could create a meal plan for me using this shake diet. I told him that actually my eating habits aren't bad - I eat lots of fruit and veggies, but probably eat too many yummy carbs and if I got to the gym more, I am sure the weight would come off over time. I said I wasn't interested in the shake diet. He told me he has lost significant weight very quickly on the shake diet and that I could as well. I told him again, I was not interested in the shake diet - and he responded somewhat dismissively, but still provided me with the nutritionist's details. We also spoke about potential plans to travel to Africa in 2011, as I have a relative there for work. He told me about the types of shots I would need to get and tried to convince me to get started on that process since they can take months to get them all done. (Reminder - this was in late summer 2009). I explained that the plans were tentative AT BEST and I did not know if would really be able to go, but appreciated the information on the vaccinations required. He then wrote me out a prescription for one of the vaccs (I can't recall which one, but there are two separate shots required) and then told me that insurance won't cover it and I would have manage the costs, but to make sure I take care of this right away as the process takes a long time. Suuuuuure - I'll get right on that. I just felt lectured and talked down to a bit - and well, it turned me off of going back. There were adverts for botox and other similar type procedures and I really wanted was a regular physical and a doctor to answer a few easy questions. I am fortunate to not have any major medical issues - so I should be an easy patient, but I am not a pushover. He is not a bad guy or incompetent doctor, I just think he probably became popular in the years I was gone and lost a little bit of the magic that made me like a lot in years past. Unlike any doctor's office experience I've had before. The autographed photographs, vibrant wall art, large golden retriever, and fabulous desk staff always quell any of my apprehension, and the music always gets me moving. I completely trust Dr. Moody's qualifications, insights, and assessments, and I love that he does not prescribe medication just because a patient requests it. He is an empathetic person, and will let you talk about what's bothering you even if what you're saying is insane. Truly, he is a wonderful doctor. read more
