This was my second visit to MahoganyBooks at National Harbor, and it reminded me why I enjoy supporting this bookstore so much. I initially stopped by to pick up the latest release from one of my favorite authors, but somehow left with two books instead. (Book lovers will understand!) I was warmly greeted when I arrived, and the welcoming atmosphere immediately made me want to linger and browse. What I appreciate most about MahoganyBooks is that it does much more than sell books. The bookstore is intentional about creating space for authors of color to be seen, celebrated, and supported. From book signings and author events to community activities and wellness-focused gatherings, it's clear that they're building community through literature and culture. After browsing the shelves, I visited the small café inside the bookstore for a smoothie before taking my new books down to the waterfront. Finding a bench by the water and reading a few pages while enjoying the beautiful views of National Harbor was the perfect way to spend the afternoon. Between the thoughtfully curated book selection, welcoming atmosphere, café, and beautiful waterfront location, the experience feels like much more than a trip to a bookstore. read more

I love independent bookstores, and a Black-owned business is the icing on the cake. I stopped in to check out the store and bought a sticker and a coffee drink. If you're a member of a sorority or fraternity, they sell merchandise here and had a good selection of all organizations. The staff were nice and I browsed a bit. MahoganyBooks has a huge selection of books for all ages. Everything is from a Black author or related to Black culture. The prices are in line with other bookstores, and you can be proud to support their local and diverse mission when you shop here. As a whole, National Harbor felt planned, corporate, and cold, but MahoganyBooks is the exception to this. Charming bookstore and coffee sharp with rich culture. It's vibrant aesthetic, tasty matcha, and great customer service has me excited to visit again! I enjoyed the overall vibe of the bookstore and it was amazing to see the wide variety of black authors represented throughout the store. In my profession, I read for a living which can tire a person out but I decided 2026 is the year of self care and decided to pick up recreational reading and what better way than with Black romance novels? I knew the authors I was seeking so walked into Mahogany with a purpose! A lovely young lady Stephanie was quick to assist me and even gave me great suggestions for other authors to check out so instead of buying one, I bought three!! The vibe was super chill with beverages available for purchase and a dope playlist- IDK how they get any work done cause I would be grooving the whole time! We enjoyed our first visit to Mahogany Books on a recent trip to the area. One of the staffers greeted us as he was leaving - autistically welcoming and all smiles. I loved the availability of a coffee bar and seating area, selection of bookmarks and enamel & wooden pins, notebooks, and, of course, books! The displays are straightforward and I easily found a few selections by and about Octavia Butler (which I needed for the flight home). Prices are comparable to larger commercial bookstores. The quaint and familiar nature of Mahogany Books made the store feel comfort and inviting. Although, I did not grab a basket due to lack of space in my luggage. The cashier was also genuinely pleasant and patient as ai wavered between bookmark, wooden pins, and an enamel selection. read more

I attended a book signing/reading event hosted by Mahogany books and it was well worth it. I didn't know there was a location at the National Harbor. The space is bright, welcoming and also has a coffee bar. Some of the most popular books were sold out but I was happy to see the diverse book selections, apparel and accessories. The event was hosted directly across the street. It was well organized, had an efficient check-in, a DJ was there and we were able to meet the author to take pictures. The chair set up could use some work but I really enjoyed myself! I will return to support events in the future. read more

I attended a meet and greet for Allen Iverson at Mahogny books. If I had to guess I would say it was well over 1,000 people waiting in line to meet Iverson. This event was well organized. They were adequately staffed and communicated through out the whole event. We stood in line for about two hours but it didn't even feel like it. The communication leading up to the event was detailed and everything they said would happen did. Walking in to the book store you can see why they are named Mahogany Books. As a black woman who loves reading I was so happy to see so many black authors books on display. For us by us. If you're thinking about attending one of their events do it. read more

Had to check out this black owned bookstore since I was in the area after a nearby Workshop. I have taken my children a few years back to the Anacostia location prior to this location being in existence. When I say incredible....it's incredible to enter a black owned bookstore . Going down aisle after aisle looking at all the wonderful books, candles, T-shirts, bookmarks, bags we decided on the signed book "You Deserve to Be Rich" They even have specialty coffees, smoothies and drinks.....winning. My only suggestion would be to have actually Mahogany Books magnets as I collect them from all the places I travel. Will most definitely be back. read more

In D.C. visiting for work and got the chance to do some strolling and happily stumbled upon this book store. Let me say 2 of my favorite things are coffee and books and this store has both! It's not a large store but they use the space very well. Towards the front of the store is where they have the coffee shop. I ordered a latte and it was good. I don't recall the cashiers name but she was very helpful. I enjoyed walking around the store and seeing all the black authors in various genres. Honestly, I had so much fun visiting this bookstore today. It was my first time stopping in, but I'd seen it for a while. The entire place is such a vibe. It is a statement within statements, and I love it. In addition to it, being a vibe, the selection of books for such a small bookstore is incredible. There are so many obscure titles as well as very well-known authors and books. I was fortunate enough to find a book about Cecile Fatiman. IYKYK. And the prices are exactly the same as what you would pay online, if not cheaper. Additionally, the service was great. The young woman working the floor was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. You can get some cheap items to support if you don't want to pay that much for a book but it's relatively low than going somewhere else. I was exploring National Harbor after a work meeting this week and saw MahoganyBooks and knew I wanted to stop in and browse. MahoganyBooks is Black-owned and focuses on books written for, by and about people of the African Diaspora. That's amazing for several reasons, one being that their inventory is just so different from you'll likely find at the average U.S. independent bookstore: different authors, different publishers, different books. They really fill a need and allow readers to find new and different books that they might not otherwise. I was able to find something interesting I hadn't heard of (some recent literary fiction by an African author) after just browsing for a few minutes. If I have a tiny, not very important criticism (and this is only because I'm short and have worked in bookshops), the shelves are too tall. I know - if I weren't five feet nothing, this might not be an issue. But there a lot of books I couldn't reach and there wasn't a stepstool or ladder that I could use to access them. That discouraged me from doing a bit of extra browsing since I just couldn't reach the books. But all in all, I'm so glad I stopped by. Not just because I found a book I'm excited to crack open, but because I really love what MahoganyBooks is doing and glad they expanded from online only to online plus National Harbor. So impressed by this bookstore! I came in on a whim and ended up spending a pretty penny on some new books. Since I wasn't looking for anything in particular, I was just browsing the aisles aimlessly, and one of the workers came up to ask if I needed help with anything. I told him what I generally liked to read and he took my through a couple of books in the adult romcom genre that he's been reading and gave me a thorough synopsis of each one, comparing them to movies and other books I may have read. Left with 3 books and a smile on my face. They also ship, so if you're looking to support more black-owned businesses, you can do so without having to fight for parking at National Harbor. Although the friendly and knowledgeable service is definitely worth the in-person experience. read more

I was hanging in this bookstore while waiting for my friend to park her car. They have an array of books in the store and they have a coffee shop coming soon, so that is exciting. I would venture to say that all of the books and merchandise in this store are from black authors. I saw books by Queen Afua, the late, great Maya Angelou, Nedra Taawab, Dennis Kimbro, J.J. Smith, and so many others. I was there on a Saturday so it was packed. I definitely plan on returning.
