The staff were so kind! The store had an amazing selection and was really well organized. It's hard to find a bookshop with a nice couch in DC but this one is back! I'll definitely be back.

My sister and I are big book readers so I knew when she came to visit I had to take her to a good bookstore. This quaint two story bookstore in Eastern Market will now be a go-to! They not only have an excellent selection, but also have signed copies of new books from some of the most popular authors! The space is cute and colorful and you will most certainly get your book fix!

New city, new bookshop stop! I had to visit this place after someone on bookstagram recommended it. Friendly greetings came right away as I took in all the creative displays of this underground treasure trove. The main floor is mainly new releases, some autobiographies and endless book lover knickknacks and souvenirs. But the best part? There's more!! They let me know that down those magical rainbow colored stairs, my mouth would drop even more. I'm honestly surprised I didn't buy the whole store! Downstairs there's art, anime, cook books, a children's section, couches and spaces for typing the next great novel... I don't think I can cover it all! I just know I was down there for a while holding and putting back and picking up several things, feeling them all out Marie Kondo style seeing if they'd make me truly happy or spark some joy (yes, every. single. thing did) before I decided to settle on several other things. And a book. I made sure to get a book haha! All this to say, go ahead and lose your book loving mind here!! A hidden DC gem for sure!!

The lovely new mural outside the shop!

I love this bookshop! It's always a wonderful experience stopping in and they definitely have a pulse on what their customers want. Everyone I've interacted with has been lovely. After having it on my list of places to check out, I finally stopped by with a friend a month or so ago for a YA trivia night! Yes, we are both adults but who doesn't love a little YA. The atmosphere was so welcoming and fun. We're hoping to go back for their W(h)ine and Angst book club - we can't get enough YA - but it hasn't aligned with our schedules yet, sadly. I also dropped by last weekend for their 3rd birthday celebration while doing the Independent Bookstore Day Book Crawl. It was honestly the most perfect day. In addition to an impressive collection of books across all genres and age ranges, they also stock adorable knick knacks and local DC mementos. If you're ever around Eastern Market, highly recommend dropping by!

On a recent MLK getaway, this was a secret gem to stumble across after a lunch at Eastern Market. A very clean and fresh bookshop on Capitol Hill, I was blown away by how much was inside here, especially the selection of non-book items that made for wonderful gifts. Staff greeted me warmly. The restrooms are surprisingly large and clean. There are plenty of comfortable seating areas throughout the store that make for an enjoyable visit to this neighborhood bookshop. If I didn't live in California, I'd visit at least once a week!

    All for sale.

On my way to nearby Bourbon Coffee, I saw a sign for a brand new independent bookstore just one block from the Eastern Market Metro right on the famous Pennsylvania Ave. The simple, yet modern sign drew me in and the friendly, local staff, beautiful layout and enormous selection of books kept me there. This bookstore is the only independent bookstore (Capitol Hill Books doesn't count since it's all used books) in the SE quadrant. The owner and most of the staff have lived on Capitol Hill for 20+ years and have a heart for the community and it shows! There's an event space and lounge on the bottom floor that can host book readings, lectures, book clubs and even parties. Being so close to the Metro, this may be the most prime event space on Capitol Hill! Go to their website to find their events: http://www.eastcitybookshop.com/in-store-events/. There are two floors of books, cards, and local DC goods like hand crafted greeting cards and notebooks. They have a travel section, mystery section, kids section....literally everything! If they don't have a book, they can order it and often get it in the next day. The owner and staff have put a lot into every detail from the lighting (It's very inviting!) to even the decorations around the store. Many of the crafts perfectly placed around the store are made by their staff including the paintings on the side of their round tables downstairs! If you're on the Hill and/or love books, you MUST pay them a visit. Ask for the owner, Laurie, and she'll greet you with open arms! P.S. They have free wifi!

Great children's and "middle readers" sections!

On a Thursday evening it was very easy for me to find parking right up front and pay the meter for an hour. The event started on time and we were able to do a Q&A with the authors (who are now NY best sellers, woot woot). After the Q&A we all stood in line to get our books signed. Everything was well organized so the line went by quickly. Kristely at the front desk was super helpful and also helped me out with a glass of wine. This will definitely be my new hangout spot to come and enjoy a drink while I indulge in a new book or two. Thank you so much Solid State for a memorable experience.
