We went to see Mai Tran at her Fullerton location since it's closer to home and, hey, all those glowing reviews made it sound like we'd be in good hands. Spoiler: nope. First off, my wife asked if they accepted her insurance. "Of course we do!" they said. Except, plot twist, she later finds out they billed her for a full exam. She thought it was her co-pay. Wrong. Guess that's what you get for believing them. Red flag #1. Then came the 40-minute wait past her scheduled appointment. Finally, she gets called back, except it's not even Dr. Tran. Nope, instead she gets some mystery stand-in, like a substitute teacher no one asked for. We booked specifically with Tran, but apparently that doesn't mean much here. Red flag #2. The exam? Don't make me laugh. They claimed her eye looked "infected" (she literally just woke up from a nap and even told them that) and then refused to give her a prescription unless she forked over more cash for an extra procedure. Because nothing screams "quality care" like holding your prescription hostage until you pay the ransom. Red flag #3. So yeah, happy for everyone who had a five-star visit, but for us? Never again. If you enjoy surprise charges, long waits, bait-and-switch doctors, and sales pressure dressed up as medical advice, this is the place for you. Otherwise, do yourself a favor: look elsewhere. Plenty of offices actually care about patients instead of treating them like walking ATMs. read more

A few years ago, I brought my daughter here for her vision check. She complained about not being able to see but after all the testing, including the extra tests that involve dilating her pupils, Dr Tang deemed her vision being fine and she didn't find anything wrong. Less than 3 years later, going to a different doctor, my daughter has been diagnosed with Myopia and is a -2.75 vision. I'm frustrated now because I should've gotten a 2nd opinion at the time but just took the word of a professional. The pandemic got in the way the last couple years, so her vision I'm sure got worse. But I'm highly certain that it could've been caught when she originally complained about not being able to see. But "tests" showed she was fine. read more

TLDR: *1/10 definitely do not recommend and would not come back :) Now if you want to full review, please continue!: I wanted to get contacts for the first time this summer. I currently have no insurance, so I would be paying out of pocket. I was told by a few people that it's pretty cheap at target for eye exams and contacts, so that's where I went! I waited until my last appt until I wrote my review... The girls at the front desk/glasses side are very sweet and helpful! The eye doctors however are a whole different story! I got my eye exam done by Dr. La. She said she was going to "under correct" me when ordering my first trial pair of contacts. (I didn't understand why, but since I am not a doctor, I just assumed she knew best). She didn't have that prescription in stock so I was sent off with contacts that I couldn't see out of and was told to just practice putting them in and taking them out. When I paid for the exam, it was $134. That is definitely not cheap like I was told. Then I walked over to the glasses side. I don't remember the name of the girl who showed me how to do this but she was great! I learned to use contacts in a very easy way and I haven't had a problem with them since! After all, this step was my whole reason for never having contacts before. It was always scary to me! haha When my first set of trial lenses arrived, I made the appt to come get them. My appt was now with Dr. Mai Tang. She is very serious. She did not say hello or give me any type of greeting. She asked why I came wearing glasses and I explained the contacts I was given were not my prescription. I tried on my new trial pair and of course. I couldn't really see since Dr. La under corrected me.. Now I did the whole 1 or 2, 3 or 4 etc. and was again sent home with contacts that were not my prescription as my right eye was still blurry. Over 3 weeks later, my next trial pair finally arrived. I had an appt with Dr. Mai Tang again. and again, no hello or greeting lol. I don't understand why you become a doctor to work with people, when clearly you hate people and human interaction! I put my new trial pair in. AGAIN. could not see clearly with my right eye. Dr. had me read the chart. Left eye read every line.. Right eye barely read the top line. She said "they just need to settle" and walked out of the room... I followed her because she didn't come back. I guess she printed my prescription and walked it over to the front desk girl... The desk girl said "hey! are you ready to order? did you want to go over the prices?" I said "oh, that's what we're doing now? That lady didn't say a word to me!" So now I have a 3 month supply of contacts that I don't know will work or not lol read more

I've been going to Target Optical to see Dr. Tang for several years now. I've always found her to be pleasant, professional and knowledgeable, and the office has great availability. Recently I had an eye injury, and she was able to see me the same day and was very reassuring and calming. It's true that she doesn't have a bubbly personality, but she has never been rude or unfriendly. I think she just has a more serious demeanor. The staff in the "showroom" side are friendly and very helpful about helping you select glasses and doing the fitting once they come in. read more

(This review is strictly for the optometrist, not the staff. The staff have always been pleasant and extremely helpful.) I have been a patient here for over five years. This optometrist, Mai Tang, is somewhat new, and I've only seen her once. That visit went well, however, the same cannot be said for today. I showed up at 5:15 for my 5:30 appointment. The optometrist had finished with her previous patient, and was informed I had checked in and was waiting. She left me waiting for THIRTY minutes, while she chatted away with this woman, totally disregarding my time. I feel completely offended and disrespected and WILL NOT be coming back. I live in Santa Ana, so Seal Beach is a drive. Thanks for making me waste both my time AND money. I could not recommend this doctor any less. Extremely RUDE and inconsiderate. I've gone in to see Dr. Tang for over six years now, and she's great! Very professional, the examinations are always very thorough without taking too long, and she genuinely cares about all her patients. My annual check-ups (examination, and picking out and purchasing new lenses and frames) never take more than two hours and you aren't pressured into buying anything you don't want. Overall I always have a very good experience with Dr. Tang and will continue seeing her for years to come! read more

I came to the decision that I needed to start looking for a new pair of glasses and pulled my prescription out to realize I hadn't had an eye exam in 2 years!!! I was a walk in 2 years ago and I was a walk in this time and on both occasions I was welcomed and invited to stick around for the next opening! (You can shop in the TARGET store or the eat in the parking lot at a number of good spots while you wait!) Dr. Tang was so helpful and welcoming to us that you feel comfortable working with her until she gets things figured out. She took the time and got it right, and I never felt pushed or compromised in the process. Dr. Tang's staff was efficient in getting our insurance approved and processed so that all I had to do was complete a couple forms and we were off and running. My prescription is ready to go and I can't wait to see how well I see with this new set of glasses. BTW- The Optometry department pricing is fairly reasonable too read more

Dr Tang is conveniently located inside the Target store in Seal Beach, which I loved since I had to grab a few things on my way out. My appointment was easy to make online and she takes most vision insurances. She was very thorough explaining the different options I had for contact lenses and she has the Optomap option for dilation. I hate those drops in my eyes that cause blurriness and discomfort to light so I paid a little extra to do the Optomap which is a retinal imaging (picture of your eye) with ZERO side effects, yet you get the same results. The staff in the Optical department is super friendly and helpful when it comes to explaining prices and benefits. All in all my experience was great and I will be referring friends and family to come see Dr Tang for their next eye exam. read more

I had my eyes checked with Dr. Tang today. She was very thorough and answered all my questions. She took her time with me and I appreciate all the info she had to offer. I have gone to Costco the past few years but it is so crowded and I think the frames at Target are nicer quality. Everyone was professional and took their time. I ordered contact lenses and glasses. I found Dr. Tang years ago when I called Target to price the hard contact lens needed to treat my Keratoconus (the hard lenses are necessary to treat the shape of the cornea) I could no longer afford the price charged at my Ophthalmologist for the fitting and the hard lenses. I not only found the savings but a great Optometrist that takes the time and has the patience necessary to get the correct fit for the medical condition and I also wear mono lenses that makes it even more difficult. . Dr. Tang will keep changing and ordering different lenses until she gets the right fit and I can see... with no additional charge. Received a thorough exam at this office. My prescription changed and I was give an opportunity to trial new contact lenses which required follow up visits to evaluate the fit, comfort and most importantly vision. Felt confident in my final choice of lenses. Also was able to return an unopened box of contacts from my previous prescription and applied that credit to my order for new contacts. Excellent experience and service. My doctor today was Dr. La. Though I have had good experiences with optometrists in the past, I learned a lot more about my vision than I ever have in any visit to date. I learned more about the fitting of my glasses. I have a broad bridge of my nose and didn't realize that the placement of the glasses on the bridge of my nose made a difference in the lens Rx. The doctor, Dr. La, a new doctor to me, is a teaching doctor, which I really appreciate. She took enough time for teaching and left me to feeling well cared for. Also the office staff, particularly Marlyne, was really helpful in assisting me to pick out glasses and consider placement relative to the bridge of my nose. Target optical is great. Super easy to make an appointment on line. Dr. Tang explains everything thoroughly and answers questions in a clear and straightforward manner. I've been wearing glasses for distance for a few years but noticed recently that there is what I can only describe as a delay in focusing from far to near. I mentioned that when I am surfing and not wearing my glasses I strain a bit to see into the distance but then when I bring my eyes to something near things blur for a split second. Dr. Tang suggested one contact ...just in my right eye. She explained that the brain just figures it out (she was far more eloquent and concise in her explanation) and one eye sees far and the other sees near. I was a bit skeptical but... it has been amazing. I'm sure this will not work with all prescriptions/situations but I am so grateful that Dr. Tang had a solution for my specific need. The ladies in the front office are great also. They gave me a contact lens "tutorial" (I'm a first time contact user) which was very helpful. Even with the tutorial I still panicked when I thought I lost the contact in my eye a few days later. Dr. Tang had a look and assured me it wasn't in my eye and was just so patient and helpful. I've been a very happy patient of Dr. Tang for the past five years. Although I have had the opportunities to use other Optometrist closer in proximity to where I live, I've continued to see Dr. Tang due to her much higher level of care relative to other optometrists I had visited during the prior 15 years. First she is perpetually cheerful with her bright smile, which always makes my visits pleasant and comfortable. Second, she is very patient in her examinations and always takes the time to check my eyes thoroughly. Third, she exhibits high skills and expertise of her craft which instills in me high confidence that I'm being provided with high quality care from a highly trained pro. Lastly, the professionalism and courtesy displayed by the reception desk people (adjacent Target Optical store) is second to none and makes the visits all the more cordial and worthwhile. Up until now, I used to go to Costco for my annual eye exams. Dr. Tangs' exam at Target was much more thorough than the exams I received at Costco. Target also accepted my vision insurance (EyeMed) which Costco did not. Lastly, the women at the "front desk" for Target Optical were very professional, competent and friendly. I was seen by Dr. La who practices in Dr. Tang's office. Quite honestly, I have never had a better exam. She took the time, was very thorough in everything she did while still being efficient, and even took time to answer my queries. Dr. Tang has been my optometrist for 5 years. I would not go to see any other optometrist. One thing I love is the Optomap (machine that takes a picture of the inside of your eye). It is so much more convenient and so much more comfortable than eye dilations. It is worth the extra cost in my opinion. Also Dr. Tang is very friendly and helpful. She answers every answer I have.
