American Chinese food. Our take-out order included General Tso's Tofu, Cashew Chicken, Lo Mein, and white rice. It was all good, fairly Americanized, but tasty nonetheless. The only other Chinese food I've had around the Charleston area was a buffet around South Hills, and I seem to remember preferring this. This doesn't compare to something like, say, Chinese food that you might find in a Chinatown in a large metropolitan city like New York or San Francisco or Los Angeles or Toronto (to say nothing of Chinese food in Hong Kong or China), but that's also an unfair comparison since, well, Charleston is not a large metropolitan city, nor does it have a Chinatown. So, yeah, good American Chinese food, nothing unexpected here, but competently done. The prices are pretty great, so that's a bonus. read more

This is our favorite Chinese. Historically we order takeout. Sesame chicken, Lo Mein, Crab Rangoon, all yummy. We often have a surprise dessert in our takeout bag too. Food: This one is a tough one for me. I've always been pretty much pleased with the food. It does not depart too much from normal Chinese take-out fare. Know that it is probably going to taste better than most Chinese food in this area, but here comes why I will likely not go there again: I got the worst food poisoning I've ever had after eating here. Now of course I cannot say with 100% confidence that it was caused by what I had here, but with the timing and looking up "Fried Rice Syndrome", I don't think it was merely coincidence. Especially considering I did not eat out anywhere else before it happened. So I've decided to play it safe and just not come here anymore. Service: Expect a little curtness, especially over the phone. But they do not speak English very well. Price: Typical, pretty affordable. Atmosphere: Nothing special at all. Small dining area, but I've always just taken out. The food is not bad, so despite getting ill, I don't feel right slapping it with a low rating. The hospital I work at ordered lunch, they forgot my order. When I called to ask about my Crab Ragoon the employees all of a sudden stated that my order was not part of the total cost how ever when the order was placed and read back it was included. The employees refused to rectify their employees mistake. So now I get to go hungry at work. As a business when your employee's make a mistake, you fix it. Smh read more

It's really good American Chinese food. Great service and hospitality. Not the most spacious, but not cramped. Most likely because they focus on takeout. I'd definitely tell anyone to try this place. Main Kwong will always be the best Chinese-style food you can get in Charleston. Every time I eat from here (both dine-in an take-out) the food is delicious, fresh, and made from good quality ingredients. The people who work there put their all into their food and service. I'm not going to say it's "authentic" Chinese, because like most places, it's the Americanized version. But if that's what you're wanting, you can't do better in the Charleston area than Main Kwong. read more

This is the best Chinese food in Chucktown...and the owner is awesome...I'm such a creature of habit that I usually don't have to give my name or what I want, she hears my voice and says " be ready in 15 minutes..." I get pick up orders here frequently, and have never been disappointed. They are fast, friendly, and you know what the quality of food will be every time. My wife always gets the general tso's, and one of my sons always gets the sweet and sour chicken, always good! I usually will try something different however since I had the garlic shrimp recommended to me I have been stuck on it! A quick call on your way there will usually result in little to no wait time, and they have plenty of parking in front, or on the side. If you are looking for honest people and good food... stay far far FAR away from this place. I have a feeling that this place is a staple for those that find themselves stranded in a local hotel and looking for some comfort food. Try Adelphia's, the local Italian place within walking distance, or order some pizza... but this stuff shouldn't even be considered food. Syrup of Ipecac is cheaper, if that is what you are looking for. Bad food, poor customer service over the phone, got my order wrong, still didn't provide what I asked for on the second chance, then asked for the food that was wrong so that they could "throw it away". A small hole in the wall at first glance, but you cannot beat the big taste of Corena's delicious Chinese food. I had never heard of this place until I did my student teaching at Piedmont, which is a couple blocks away. After that, I was hooked! Homemade sauces & freshly made ingredients make for the best food around. The crispy chicken is a favorite. Big chunks of white meat chicken dredged in their tasty coating & tried to a perfect golden brown. It's like sweet & sour but better. The sauce is sweet, but has a kick of hotness. If you're in town or a regular customer, I would keep Main Kwong on speed dial! You can also see into the kitchen while they are preparing your food & the kitchen is very clean & well maintained. When I think of West Virgina, good Chinese food usually isn't the first thing I think of. Yet, here, in the heart of Charleston, is some grub ass Chinese food. Easily as good as any Chinese food I've had here in San Francisco, and that's saying something. Admittedly, I did only go here once, but my friend Chris who lives out there, and took me to this place goes there quite a bit, and he says everything he's had there is very good.
