First time I went, apparently her A/C was out. She frantically informed me of what the temp was in the store and that she needed to get home. OK. I get it. Visit #2. No greeting. OK, the owner was busy at the counter with a customer. I cruise the premises. Customer leaves, returns with husband. It was pretty classic so I commented on it. No response. They have some nice things, mostly reasonably priced. 3rd time. I'm def looking for something specific. Figured I'd ask when I got in. Well,, no greeting again. This time she was totally engaged with another woman at the register...the entire 15 min I was in the store. I scoped out the entire perimeter again, was going to get in a question or two, but these ladies were talking about school and their kidz... I'm a #GrievingMom and a retired SpEd teacher, so OK, AGAIN. As I approached the exit, I hear, "Did you need help looking for anything?" My response, "A little late to ask"., and I walked out. I am a SuperThrifter. I've been collecting vintage clothes for over 50 years. I love small consignment shops because they usually have some of the local charm and people who love what they do. He has one room dedicated to hardware and small odd parts, has a lot of porcelain/glassware, and a large number of antique doors. Also has a variety of other things. What's really fabulous is when he gets in some of the really rare, museum-quality pieces he gets that I have no idea where he gets so many of from time to time! At one point he had a magnificent 19th century oil painting portrait of a child AND had the dress the child was wearing in the portrait to sell with it! He had a magnificent collection of antique dolls he sold - 2 of which were featured on the Antique Road Show when they came to Cobo Hall in Detroit - one of the dolls was valued at $25,000-30,000. Another time he had a couple of great 19th century samplers I'd likely have bought, but he'd already sold them to a local doctor. Worth stopping if just to chat with the owner and then head across the street to this great Chinese restaurant he recommended to us that we went back to because the food was so good.

Every…read moreyear my family stays at my grandma's cottage and on a Sunday morning we bundle up and cut down our Frasier Fir at Krause Tree Farm. They have a cabin where you can buy refreshments like cocoa and marshmallow snowmen, and they sell other things like ornaments and decorations. It's always better to cut down your REAL tree, than get it from a lot. These trees stay so fresh, that you actually feel sad putting it to the curb after Christmas.
