I've been here off and on since they opened years ago. This time I ordered the chicken quesadilla to go. The person who made it needs to learn how to make a quesadilla. It's not difficult. This particular quesadilla featured tough, rubbery tortillas. I don't know how that happens. There wasn't a lot of chicken in it but what was there was dry. They used Swiss cheese. On a quesadilla. And, the final crime was they left out the chiplote sauce (which is actually pretty good here). So, not your best effort today, Main Street. Most of the menu items are good, like the chicken salad and the Fighting Colonel. But if you're looking for a quesadilla, head down the street to El Cazador. read more

If I could somehow give zero stars, I would, but unfortunately, I'm stuck with the horrible task of detailing just how mind-bogglingly bad this experience was. It wasn't just bad--it was a descent into chaos. It was a full-on battle for survival, and I'm convinced I'll be traumatized for life after witnessing what I did. The first thing that hit me, right as I walked in the door, was the speed. No, not the food, which was terrible and came with a side of heartbreak, but the managers--the people who were supposed to ensure some level of order and customer service. Instead, they acted like they had been injected with rocket fuel, setting an absurd pace that made the entire dining experience feel like a high-speed chase. These managers didn't walk--they zoomed. It was like watching a blur of motion, each one flying through the restaurant like they were on the verge of solving world peace, but only through hyper-speed logistics. I'm not talking about a quick walk or a brisk jog. No, no. These managers were talking and moving so fast, it was like they were in some kind of time warp. The speed at which they spoke was something straight out of an action movie where the main character is on a tight deadline to save the world. I swear, if you blinked for even a fraction of a second, you would have missed their entire interaction with you. Words were coming out of their mouths so fast, it was like they were trying to break some kind of world record for verbal velocity. The first manager I encountered was a blur of activity. His words were a rapid-fire barrage, each sentence seemingly faster than the last. He didn't ask me how my day was, or if I wanted a menu. No, instead, he blurted out something like, "What would you like? You ready to order? We've got specials--today only, half off the lasagna! Oh, and the soup's fresh, but hurry, we're almost out!" The words spilled from his mouth at such a pace that I couldn't even comprehend them. It felt like he was giving me a quiz, not taking my order. I literally had to ask him to repeat himself three times just to understand what he was saying. By the time I processed what he was talking about, he was already gone, zipping off to another table to harass some poor soul who probably didn't know what hit them. Now, the second manager--let me tell you about him. If I thought the first manager was fast, I had no idea what was coming. This guy was talking at a pace that seemed physically impossible for a human to maintain. It wasn't just speed; it was the intensity of the speed. He wasn't just rattling off words like some machine gun of nonsense; no, this guy was shouting orders as though he was calling out coordinates for a military strike. He would sprint up to customers, and before they could blink, he would be giving them a 20-second rundown of the specials, the drink options, and the desserts. It felt like trying to catch up with a freight train that didn't care whether you were on board or not. I swear, if I hadn't been holding onto the edge of my table, I would have been sucked into the speed vortex. The sheer velocity of his speech was enough to make my head spin. It was like he was trying to fit the entire dictionary into 30 seconds of his life. "You want water, okay, hold on, ice? Great, I'll be back with your drink, no time to waste, we've got orders coming in fast, hang tight!" And he was gone. Poof. Vanished before I even had a chance to ask for my napkin. But it didn't end there. I'm telling you, these managers were on another level--a level that exists somewhere between the speed of light and the concept of time itself. One of them actually tried to have a conversation with a table while literally running circles around them, dodging chairs, weaving between customers, and still managing to spit out rapid-fire sentences that no human should be able to string together without combusting. The fact that I was able to even catch half of what he said was a miracle. I didn't even know where to focus--was I supposed to focus on the words or the blur of motion that seemed to follow him everywhere? As I sat there, in utter disbelief at the unrelenting pace of the managers, I couldn't help but feel like I was in a bizarre experiment. Were they trying to see how much I could process at once? Were they trying to make me feel like I was on the verge of a mental breakdown? Because that's exactly what it felt like. I had to keep looking at the menu again just to make sure I was ordering the right thing, but by the time I finished reading, the manager was already at another table, talking to someone else at 10 times the speed. It was as if time was moving in double-time for everyone around me. read more

I hate when I'm staying at a hotel with free continental breakfast, but it's outside the timing of my meetings. Such was the case during a recent trip to the Altavista area. Having started my day at 5:30am and having my first break at 9am, I knew I was out of luck for the sufficient hotel breakfast. So I took to Yelp to get suggestions on where I can get some breakfast food. The top choice popped up: Main Street Cafe. Intrigued by the high ratings and raving reviews, I knew I was going there to get my fix. Walking inside, you don't feel like you're in Altavista. Not in a bad way, but it seems like this is the type of place you would see in a touristy, hip area of the US. Pleasantly surprised, I walked up to the sandwich counter and perused the menu, quickly deciding on the Farmhouse bagel. While the young gal prepped my food order, I strolled around the gift shop; cute is the only way to describe it. Knick-knacks and specialty items that you would typically find in old-town tourist spots. My sandwich took about 8 minutes, and was worth every second. I got back to my hotel, anxious to dig in. I know it wasn't just my hunger when I say this was the HANDS-DOWN BEST SANDWICH I'VE EVER STUFFED IN MY MOUTH! I can't believe how they can pack this much deliciousness into one bagel! The egg was fried to a perfect creamy consistency with salt and pepper, and the sausage was fresh and tasty. I was a bit skeptical about the green peppers, but the balance was unreal. I am going to dream about that damn sandwich, that's how friggin awesome it was! read more

This little gift shop is 50% or more a sandwich shop. They have all sorts of bread for the sandwiches and also do deli trays for home parties. Breakfast is also served. There are hot and cold sandwiches and many varieties of salads. There are quesadillas, a surprise for this area. They also offer personal pizzas.. None of the items on the menu exceed $6.00, except for the deli platters. There's a private parking lot in back and after lunch you can browse the trendy little gift shop. The site is apparently an old bank, as a huge vault is at one end of the place. Order at the counter and get called by a discreet "pager" system. OK for kids but not recommended for groups of more than five or so. Tables are limited in size and number. Fast and friendly service from bright young counter people read more

I have no complaints about this establishment. The prices are incredibly fair, they support local business (the cupcakes, Boarhead meats, etc), and the staff is above and beyond in service and courtesy. I cannot count the number of times they have been helpful and accommodating. I once asked for real cream for my coffee (Seattle's Best--my favorite) and the guy behind the counter actually went to Vista Food and bought me creamer. Incredible. I have had almost everything on the menu. No complaints. It's truly one of the few gems of Altavista. I can't think of one thing I don't like about it. I recommend the pizzas and the club wrap is the best I've ever had. read more

Whenever I travel I live to support local coffeeshops/cafes. We travelled from New York to the area so my husband could officiate at a wedding. I was thrilled to find your cafe. The food was fresh, delicious and outstanding! I had my first pumpkin spice coffee for the season and it was very good. The staff was top notch and very welcoming! We felt right at home!! I'm giving it 4 stars bc I asked for certain things on and off my sandwich - they didn't quite get that right. It's located in an old bank and the large windows give a great local cafe atmosphere. Wonderful place for a quick lunch or breakfast. I live in Indianapolis and am visiting family and wanted to eat something fresh and delicious. This satisfied that craving. I had a whole wheat wrap with mozzarella, cucumber, spinach, red onion, and mushroom with pesto sauce. It was really delicious. My mother had the Main St. Club and she loved hers as well. Not only am I impressed with the food - the staff was very kind and courteous. Everyone smiled and seemed genuinely pleasant and positive. I also noted that the restaurant supported the local community, whether through vendors, merchandise, or fundraising. This is something notably absent from a lot of mainstream, commercial establishments and something that I really appreciate. Another plus is their free WiFi and their artisan coffee bar. My only complaint is that their hours aren't longer. (They close at 2 pm) This place is a gem and I will definitely return before I go back to Indy. read more

Easily the best eating establishment in Altavista. I live in DC and have great food at my fingertips, but struggle to find the same quality back home in Altavista. However, Main St. Cafe has great variety, great quality, and great prices for the style and quality food they offer in an ideal setting. They have outdoor & indoor seating as well as a gift shop to wander in while waiting for food, and they even have a very cute iPad station if you need to Google something while you snack. Chicken Cordon Bleu is my personal favorite along with any of the coffees and a chocolate chip cookie. read more
