I have seen some bad performances in my life, but the show "Tamara Siler - Sins and Saints" ranks among one of the worst musical events I have ever heard. To sum it up - SHE WAS AWFUL! Consistently flat, raspy, off key - - and she even forgot the lyrics to the sing she was singing - - not just once, but TWICE! WHO advised this woman to charge people money to hear her sing? Truly a disaster! Not only did I feel ripped off, but my auditory senses were offended at the sounds. I will give her one star for having the courage to stand up on stage. read more

I came here for a play tonight for the first time and absolutely loved the venue! It was clean, cozy, intimate and all of the workers were so helpful and welcoming. I love venues that are smaller and feel more personable. I can't wait to see more shows here in the future! read more

This is the most outstanding live theatre experience in Houston. The intimacy, the unreal sets and costumes, and THE TALENT of the writing and performing. My husband and I happened upon the rave reviews of Christmas at Pemberley way back in 2017, and as an Austenite, I had to see it. The show was outstanding, and I have seen every iteration of the trilogy in the last 6 years. After a single show there, my family invested in season tickets and committed to the blind trust every year after our first. The quality of the productions, the commitment to women and POC creators, and the sensitive customer service have made us lifelong supporters of MST Houston. My final date night, the NIGHT I went into labor with my second child, I was at Main Street Theater in Rice Village of Houston, TX! I credit my water breaking to the entertainment and relaxation of Main Street Theater. Looking forward to many more years! read more

My first visit to Main Street Theater was this past Saturday to watch Lois Lowry's The Giver with my students. The play was very much in line with the book, and it was perfect for students who have read The Giver. So, the play was great. My four stars are really for the prompt service their booking department provides! I teach at a private non-traditional school that has classes on a Saturday, and therefore needed to see a play during class time. They were so accommodating and helpful! The man in charge of group bookings, Andrew, was absolutely wonderful in aiding me with booking the tickets, directing me on seating, and guiding me throughout the entire process from details about the play to ensuring they were expecting us the day of the play. They have great customer service. Any teachers out there should definitely reach out to Main Street Theater as they put on many renditions of books read by students in grades one through eleven (maybe even 12?). Anyway, the youth plays are all appropriate for students in elementary through high school. A great resource for educators in Houston. :) read more

I like the intimate feel this place has! It helps you get into the show, you feel like you are really close to the action. Watched a play (Richard III) here this past weekend. We hadn't purchased tickets yet and when we got to the box office window some staff members were speaking about something that sounded important. The nice lady stopped to let me know she'd be with me as soon as she could. Shortly after, they were done with the conversation and she apologized for me having to stand there and wait. It wasn't a problem, but I appreciated the gesture. She then excitedly told me that some people had just cancelled and she was going to sell me some "great" seats, 3rd row center, that had just opened up. I happily took the tickets, which where very reasonably priced at $10 each. I'd been to a production at the other location on Times before when I won some free tickets. I liked that show better than the one I recently saw performance wise, but they were both great entertainment. I will be frequenting MST now more often. read more

Went to see Henry V last weekend - my first time at Main Street Theater, and I was beyond impressed. This is the best date night I've had in a long time and an option I highly recommend for anyone who wants to do something a bit different than the old "dinner and a movie" routine. The show was fantastic, a collaboration between MST and Prague Shakespeare Company. The setting is exceptionally intimate. There are only three rows, and you're never more than 10 feet from the actors. No microphones necessary, and no way you could possibly have a bad view. The lights, music, and special effects are all first class. Henry V featured rain, special war-lighting that looked like a scene out of Apocalypse Now, and live Taiko drummers. I can't wait to go back! Special discounts on tickets available to students. I recommend calling a few days in advance to make sure a large enough block of seats is available for your group. read more

Went to see Into the Woods at Main Street Theater in Rice Village. When I first walked in, I was unimpressed. The theater is a black box theater, so there is seating on all sides, and the performance space is very small, with no set. I immediately had my reservations. When the show started, I still was in doubt about whether I'd like it or not. But as the show progressed, and I started to get used to the different feel of the theater (it was my first black box experience) and the lack of set. About halfway through the first act I really started to forget about the lack of set, and I really enjoyed the show from then on. I love the show itself, so seeing it done in a new way was really refreshing and entertaining. I was especially impressed by the female cast. The Witch, Cinderella, and the Baker's wife were the highlights of the show, but all around there wasn't a weak actor. I look forward to seeing another musical at MST. I loved the feel of the theater and how close I was to the action. In general, there is no bad seat in the theater. There are a few support poles, but they don't ever block too much. Student ticket are always available for between $5 and $10, and even for non-students, the tickets are completely affordable. read more

Went with my son on his 2nd grade field trip yesterday to see Barbara Park's Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business ( http://www.mainstreettheater.com/youththeater/junie.html ). This is the second time we've seen a children's production at this theater and both times both my son and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The theater is small and very quaint, padded bench seating but it's set up in a way that makes the kids feel like they are right in on the performance. Parking is a little tight when there's field trips with buses but I can't imagine it's much of a problem for normal performances. The cast was very accommodating and had a question and answer after the performance. The stage manager was a little gruff but after dealing with that many 8 year olds and parents I'd be a little frazzled too. I know my son said he's looking forward to going back.... Great spot for a family outing and close to the museum district to extend the day into a whole adventure. read more

I saw that they're doing an adaption of The Giver and was eager to see it. I invited my friend to watch as well and we both enjoyed it. Since it was condense to 1hr and 15 min time frame, the ending seem a little rush but nonetheless superb acting skills. The casts are really nice and were willing to give you their autographs. Before the show, there was a mini-concession stand and it was not as expensive as I thought it'll be. It just marked probably $1 higher. The seats in the theatre was comfortable and placed on steps so people that are short like me can see over tall paper that likes to sit in front of us. When the show started, the a/c was turned on really cold. If you come, bring a sweater! Since it was The Giver, there was a lot of preteens and kids watching, but they were not annoying. There's a disclaimer saying no kids under 3, not even if they're sleeping which I really do appreciate. read more

I was excited to bring my child to the showing of Pinkalicious and my mood completely changed once I entered the theater. The male that was on the computer handing out will call tickets was very rude, I witnessed him having something to say about anyone and everyone that was walking by. He treated his fellow employees like they were below him, as well as, telling a woman, who was most definitely older than he (show some respect), off and made things very uncomfortable. In addition, I felt a very uneasy environment here. Will not be returning. read more

I am really impressed with Main Street Theater. I've seen a few shows there and they have been good solid productions. While some choices in their season line-ups don't appeal to me, it does not negate the quality of the shows. Urinetown was great and was as enjoyable as seeing it on Broadway or at TUTS. Most recently, I saw Caroline, or Change and it was absolutely fantastic. Bravo to the director, casting head and enitre cast. If you go, just be sure to get seats in the center sections. Saw "The Last Wife" yesterday evening. It was a great show. As for the theater it's self, I love the small intimate vibe. The front rows are basically on the performance floor, it feels like you are part of the action. I will be coming back to see another show. read more

Friends and myself have gotten season tickets here for the last 3 years. It's a great deal (especially if you buy the season before they announce the shows) and we've enjoyed almost all the shows. (I guess you can't please everyone all the time.) I think they are remodeling the Times location in Rice Village and that is going to become their full time home. Can't wait. The 3rd graders at my son's elementary school were looking forward to their field trip this week to see James & The Giant Peach. Unfortunately the Main Street Theater CANCELLED their reservation. They stated, due to the construction going on around the theater and the history of our school not being on-time to the 9:30 performances, they are cancelling the reservation and refunding our money. 1) Our principal was unaware of any tardiness in the past on the schools part 2) If there was an issue with our school, why take the reservation in the first place? 3) Why wait until 2 days before the field trip to cancel???? Don't these people CARE about the students that are upset over not getting to go on a field trip this year? Don't these people CARE about the teachers and volunteers put in place to organize a field trip for that many students??? Shame on you Main Street Theater. You've hurt the hearts of 8 & 9 year old children. Bravo! read more

We have been season ticket holders for 2 years and I think the performances keep getting better! I was disappointed at last year's scrubbing of the poignant message in The Best Christmas Ever, but kids and adults alike have enjoyed all of the others. We look forward to this wholesome, educational experience as a family. At about $12 a seat, it is a relatively inexpensive way to create lasting memories as a family, as well as reinforce a love of reading the quality children's literature portrayed. read more

I 4 year old daughter ended just today a two week summer camp session. It was delightful. Music, games, role play. It was interesting, challenging, and safe. An experience that took her daily-at home-role play to the next level, an experience that requiried team work, an experience that stimulated communication skills and creativity. This was our first encounter with Main Street Theater, I found reassuring that the always checked who was picking up the kids and asking for ID. Even the little ones made a final presentation. We are season ticket subscribers to Main Street Theater and prefer it to TUTS or Broadway Across America where we have also been subscribers. The theater is intimate and the acting quality is usually very high. Their choices of production are always interesting and literate. The location in Rice Village makes it very convenient to have dinner in the Village and then walk to the theater. They are in the process of making some capital improvements which should only improve the experience. If you haven't been to Main Street Theater you should give it a try! Preview shows usually run $10-$15 and under age 30 pays only $20. read more

Fabulous productions! My four year old daughter and I LOVE Main Street Theater and we have never seen a bad show here. This is one of our favorite places in Houston. I love the assigned seating and the layout of the theater. LOVED Pinkalicious, Little House Christmas, Duck for President, and Miss Nelson is Missing. Tons of parking and great location. 'Girl's Only' was hilarious! My least favorite part was 'reading of the diaries'...but the 'last part', 'the purse exchange' & so much in between...you have to see it to know what I'm talking about...was just non-stop laughing! The actors are very talented and their ad libs brillant! Seating in the theater was great...not too big so most seats were just fine for hearing & seeing. This was a Christmas present to sister & daughter in law so it was a fun afternoon of laughing! read more
