We also chose to install an exterior solar shade to a set of sliding doors for our deck. Working with Lal was a wonderful and seamless experience! He is highly responsive, answered all of my questions, and installed our shades quickly and efficiently. The price was also exactly what I was planning to spend so that was great. We LOVE our new shades. We now have blackout shades in our bedrooms and light filtering shades on the windows in our living areas. We are sleeping better and our home is noticeably cooler (especially with our exterior solar shade for our sliding glass doors). I think the photos speak for themselves :).

I had a terrible experience and cannot recommend Budget Blinds of Berkeley and Richmond…read more I spent nearly $3,000 on custom shades specifically because I wanted the guidance of an in-home consultant. Instead, I ended up with multiple problems that I believe should have been prevented during the consultation, followed by an installation experience that became defensive and confrontational. The biggest unresolved issue is the headrail color. I chose Natural Tan fabric, and the paperwork said "Rail Color: DEFAULT." No one explained that the default headrail would be tan, or that white was available instead. All of the window trim in my home is white, and I would have chosen white had that option been explained. I'm not a window-treatment professional. That's exactly why I hired a consultant. When I raised this on installation day, the salesperson/installer argued that I should have understood it from a blue shade sample I'd been shown with a blue headrail. It wasn't until then that he told me I could have ordered white headrails to match my trim. The owner later offered to remake the shades with white headrails at wholesale cost, which would still have required me to spend more than $2,000 to correct a choice that was never explained to me in the first place. There was also a major misunderstanding about a front-window shade. I specifically asked whether they could make a shade that was both light filtering and room darkening, operable from the top down. He told me yes, absolutely, and when I mentioned that another company had told me they didn't offer this, he assured me that Budget Blinds did. Someone else present at the consultation came away with the same understanding I did. What arrived was a 100% blackout shade, not light filtering. When I raised this during installation, the salesperson/installer became defensive, argumentative, and confrontational in my home, to the point that someone involved by phone asked him to leave the property. The owner never addressed my concerns about the installer's behavior. Her position throughout was essentially, "You signed the quote, so the responsibility is yours." That may be her contractual position, but it sidesteps the reason I hired an in-home consultant in the first place, which was to explain important product and design choices I did not know enough to ask about. There were other issues as well. A door shade did not provide the side-angle privacy I had asked for, one shade arrived with a cracked headrail and had to be replaced, and when the installer later returned for that replacement, he arrived almost three hours before the scheduled appointment without confirmation. The owner did acknowledge that this violated their scheduling policy. To the owner's credit, the damaged shade was replaced and I received a credit for the returned front shade minus a 25% fee. But overall, the experience was stressful, adversarial, and far below what I expected from a custom in-home service. The shades themselves are functional and reasonably attractive, but I'm stuck with large tan headrails that don't match my home. I would not work with this company again.

Then at the HMB Pumpkin Festival this past October Bay Home & Window had a booth. We stopped, talked, and make an appointment for a consultant to come out. After a scheduling delay due to overbooking at the Festival we got an appointment. On the day of the appointment the window designer Sarah was on time. Based on our needs she made recommendations which we concurred with. Measurements were taken and an order was placed. We paid 1/2 advance. Over the next two month projected timeframe we received email updates. When our product arrived to the warehouse we received a call for installation date. This afternoon our window installer arrived within the two hour window. Robert A. He was friendly and very competent. He completed our installation in 1/2 hour. We're very pleased with Bay Home & Window from start to finish.

We used Bay Area Window for four skylight shades…read more Design (Aleksandra): 5/5 Aleksandra was communicative and responsive throughout the process. She provided meaningful options and we are happy with the design. We discussed with Aleksandra that we wanted the shades installed as close to our skylights as possible, and she confirmed with the installer that that was possible. Install (David): 2/5 We did a walkthrough with David and again explained that we wanted the shades as close to our skylights as possible. He asked, and we told him, that we also wanted the solar recharging panels to be on the side where the shade collected when opened (so the panels would be less visible). To be fair, David warned us that he would likely scratch the walls and may leave gaps because the coverage around our skylights was uneven. Both of those came to pass (which I am separately fixing), but that is not why we are unhappy with the install. Rather: - Despite the fact our ceiling is flat and our skylights are flat, David installed the shades at a slight angle. When I confronted him about it, he stated he was trying to follow the wall around the skylight. I disagree that his approach accomplished that. In any event, if there were options as to how the shades were going to be installed, we believe David should have conferred with us before unilaterally making a decision. - David also installed the solar panels on the opposite side of where we discussed. David stated he had no recollection of our prior conversation. We disagree that we never discussed this, but as above, if there were options, we believe David should have checked with us before installing. After confronting David about the shade with the most severe angle he begrudgingly reinstalled it (photos attached). Aleksandra did offer a partial refund and offered to have David come back out and reinstall the shade. However, we do not have the availability to monitor David the entire time he is here, which appears to be the only way to ensure things are done as we discussed. Additionally, the 3 of the 4 corner covers have fallen from the shade that David reinstalled and we do not relish the same thing happening to the other shades. The upshot is Aleksandra is easy to work with, but if you get David to do your install you may want to supervise his work.
