We had some old, damaged blinds replaced and they are great! Everything from the person I talked to at the local store, to the person who measured the windows it to the person who installed them, it was all a positive experience. And they look fantastic! Bad service. It is overpriced, which I was happy to pay to get a quick turnaround. But that didn't go as planned. You have to wait 3 weeks to get an install date. Then they cancel install at the last minute, and then you are good for 3 more weeks (if all goes well). I won't be back. read more

What a scam. I placed a order with them back in May. After placing the order, they switched the blinds to a different color due to "backorder" of the original color I ordered, okay fine - no big deal. 1st Surprise, the "new" color is actually backordered as well - no email, no communication, NOTHING until I reached out to customer service in June to see what is going on. Apparently the other color was backordered too. Okay, understandable with what is going on. Fine, now i've waited until August and the shades are being delivered. I was traveling and wasn't able to schedule the installation until mid october.. BUT the installer doesnt show up. OKAY fine, reschedule the installation AGAIN. They finally show up on Oct 30th (Thursday) and install the blinds. 2nd surprise - One of the blinds doesn't fit! It can't be pulled all the way down window frame, okay fine - maybe one of my window's is warped, but why bother sending someone to 'measure' the window if it's not going to fit my whole window? It's only one window, so whatever, I'll live with it. 3rd surprise - Nov 1st (Saturday) comes around and I pull the blinds down during the day and notice there are small cuts in the blinds! Why bother paying for installation if they're going to be damaged from the install?? Maybe my fault for not pulling the shades and inspecting them prior to the installer leaving, but who would THINK that that would happen. I immediately write in to customer service and explain the situation. What's their solution? a 25% discount on a NEW order. I just spent 3k on a product that took 6+ months to be installed only to live with blinds that have small cuts. After all their claims on having a superior product, a 'professional' measurer, and a 'professional' installer, all 3 had issues. SAVE YOUR MONEY and go somewhere else that'll get you an actual quality product, or a mediocre product for a better price. They're both expensive AND a crap product. read more

I outfitted my new home with their shades almost four years ago and one immediately stopped working. I stopped in the shop to get it serviced and received a call within a couple days as well as f/up emails to replace the shade under their lifetime warranty. They sent one box for the shade which was 'lost in transit.' The tech picked up the broken shade which was then 'lost in transit.' And then I was ghosted. I visited the store on a Saturday at about 2:30. The door was locked but two women were sitting at adjacent computers, while one was on the phone. There was a sign on the door that read, "Be back momentarily." Since there was no indication what momentarily meant - 15 minutes or 30 minutes, I called the main Shade Store number and inquired what was going on. She encouraged me to knock on the door, which I did. A woman finally came to the door reluctantly and told me in a rude and supercilious manner that they were on their lunch break. What? Lunch at 2: 30 on a Saturday! I said I was told to knock on the door and had no way of knowing that they were having lunch. She acted like I was bothering her. Hadn't I read the sign? she asked. I told her that she seemed very angry and unhelpful and that I had no intention of doing business there. Very weird and unhelpful customer service. No grace or politeness at all! read more

Our experience with the Shade Store on 4th St., Berkeley, CA was excellent. Some context: Our west facing picture window in the hills is a mixed blessing. It provides gorgeous sunsets as well as oppressive heat and headache inducing glare. We've attempted solutions for over 20+ years (drapes, blinds, translucent films, etc.), then friends suggested mechanized roller shades from the Shade Store. The sales/design consultant Angela Kellett has a thorough knowledge of popular design solutions, available operating options and a talented eye for colors and textures. She also efficiently managed our delivery and installation logistics. Installation The company installers were on time, produced a durable installation, and considerate of our house (e.g., paper booties over work boots, taking care not to mar the walls with long packages.) Quality has gone way downhill. Ordered shades in 2023 that we were happy with, went to reorder for different windows in 2025 and we were very clear that we wanted the exact same thing as before. Sales person made no mention that they had completely changed the railings. Feels super cheap - like IKEA quality now. Do NOT use these people at all. The shades are great and we have used them before but getting installation is absolutely a nightmare. This time we ordered our shades in Feb. iIt's now May and our installation which changed a couple of times was scheduled today at 8 to 12am May the 4th. I left a note on the door at 805am saying today, as I had a 4 hour window, I would be back in 10 minutes as I had to take my daughter to school. He "Steve" arrived per my camera at 812 and left shortly thereafter. I was back at 821. He claimed he called and waited 30 min, which is an absolute lie. His next appointment wasn't until 11 of which he was late too. Gee I wonder what he did for nearly 5 hours? Now I have to wait another month for installation, if in fact it even happens. That said we spent 4K on this order. You would think repeating customers would get better treatment. They DONT care. At all. Always passing the buck with multiple phone calls. So buyer beware and I'm sure other shade stores would treat you better. That can't be this bad in regards to installation and just understanding customers are actually important to a business. read more

I'm in the middle of an ongoing multipart debacle with the shade store. One of the shades they delivered was the wrong size, and it took another month to get the correct shade in. A part on one of the other shades fell off, and I'm still waiting to hear what they intend to do about that. We also noticed that, contrary to our experience in the showroom with the top down bottom up blinds, it is impossible to get the top or bottom rail where you want it, because they basically don't stay where you put them. And no matter what you do, it's impossible to get the top and bottom rails straight, they are always higher on one side than the other. This makes the blinds feel and look cheap. I've written numerous times to their customer care person and I'm still waiting. If they resolve these issues I will be happy to give a better rating, but at the moment I would say - these guys are expensive and the quality isn't reliable, go someplace else read more

The person who initially helped me wasn't proactive about pointing out details, and missed several of the important details on my order (type and color of hardware, shade style, etc. I was made to reorder twice because the materials she initially showed me were out of stock. What should have taken 6 weeks turned into about 4 months. When the shades were finally made, one was made wrong. And they're expensive. And when I finally shared my frustration, Tessa's attitude was puzzling -- no apology, making excuses, and actually, very rude. The entire attitude of this company is arrogant. For a family-run organization, its terrible customer service is shocking. The only people I dealt with who were helpful were the guys who came to measure and install the shades. The actual shades look great. Unfortunately they continue to fail and the company seems unwilling to back up their products. I bought 13 shades for a business in Oakland for about $17K. I'm going to need a bunch more shades for a business expansion in West Berkeley -- really close to this Shade Store location -- and yet their poor customer service is leading me to find a new vendor. Our shades in Oakland are large, but The Shade Store designed and installed them, ensuring me that most would work with manual chains instead of being motorized. After nearly a dozen incidents of broken chains and other problems, it's obvious that there are major issues here. They replaced one a while ago for a reasonable fee, but now they want to charge me more than $1K each to replace their faulty shades with motorized ones! It's really surprising to me that a supposedly high-end company like this wouldn't fully back up their products. I guess the rash of recent negative reviews shows I'm not alone here. TLDR: Run - do not walk - away from the shade store. The worst customer experience and product quality experience I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and order from someone else - every step of this experience has been poor. I'd sew these shades myself for a fraction of the cost and probably end up with better quality. When we first walked in the store, unacknowledged by sales staff, I asked "so who gets to help us?" and watched 2 people hesitate and look at each other, before one finally said "that will be me." It was at this point I should have known. Alas, the sheer fabrics and their perceived quality and the artful pictures got me, so we carried on. Next we had measurements done - a generally painless experience until we later realized they were wrong - every single shade was too long. After holding my breath placing the $$$$ order, I was given a status page with shipment date that meant nothing. The date came and went without any update - then it took 1.5 weeks to get any update from 5 different people on its status. Everyone we talked to had no idea what was happening and feigned shock (I now see this is not a new issue). We finally got word that our order did not pass quality control and was being remade. A little pause for concern, but I naively thought a QC process was a good thing. But now I have ZERO idea how any of the shades we finally received passed a QC check. There are so many issues with them that not a single shade is of remotely acceptable quality for the price we paid -- these don't resemble the shades were were sold in any way. Gaping holes exposing rods, terrible sewing that creates awful pleats that cannot be steamed or smoothed, ink marks on the cords, glue spots and excessive pulling on the fabric. The different panels within the same shade are not the same width so there are random gaps down the sides that don't make straight edges. The panels are also inconsistent lengths - so the shades we have right next to each other look completely mismatched. The cord mechanism does not work consistently on any of the shades - when pulled up, one side droops so the bottom is uneven and cannot be adjusted to even out. When we shared these issues, we were offered shock and also a thought of "maybe a different fabric or style would be better?" WHAT?! We placed an order of several thousand dollars - after months of this being our selected fabric/style, multiple visits to the store and talks with more than one designer, a review of the order by the production team required before we could fully place it - and THEN get that feedback? Without any confidence?Complete and total loss of faith in the shade stores ability to rectify these issues. read more

This review is long overdue. We had purchased our shades from this location back in 2017 and my husband installed them all and everything was working fine until the left clutch of the shades that were installed on the sliding glass door broke a few months ago. and the shades could no longer be lowered or raised. In a state of panic I called the Berkeley store and they reassured me that a technician would come out and take a look and see if the entire shades will need to be replaced or just the broken clutch. The technician came out a few days later and confirmed that the clutch was broken and it would take a few weeks for the new clutch to arrive. He informed us that the cord was attached too tightly which caused additional stress on the clutch. Overall the experience with all Customer service reps, Salesperson and technicians at the Shade Store was top notch. I highly recommend this store for all your shades purchases. They stand behind their products and each person I've dealt with either on the phone or in person represents The Shade store Brand very well. If we are ever in need of new shades in the future we will definitely be back at the Berkeley Store. read more

Working with this company was beyond frustrating. We wanted some really nice blinds for our home and thought we had found the right place, but after we went in and selected what we wanted, communication immediately became an issue. It was very difficult to schedule measuring/installation appointments, and Angela who helped us wouldn't respond to our emails. After finally getting the things made and installed, the fit was terrible, and there was a whole saga of getting things that properly blocked the light, having to replace latches on the windows that we were assured wouldn't be an issue, and a bunch of other issues. It took us a few months to get stuff like that addressed, and by that time the blinds we had were starting to fall apart, the wood was warping and the mechanisms were breaking. The quality is absolutely awful of everything we purchased, despite the astronomical cost. After 10 months of back and forth, we declined anymore remakes, since we didn't want to send anything else to the landfill. They offered us a partial refund as compensation, but then mysteriously never delivered on that, and are impossible to contact. And they just keep sending us box after box of blinds with no explanation. It honestly feels like they're deliberately messing with us. We're giving up again on trying to deal with these guys, the whole thing has been hilariously terrible. Truly, we recommend you do not give these guys your money, or even contact info. read more

TLDR: Use any other provider. It took over 10 install attempts over a couple of months to get everything installed properly. We went through multiple design consultants after the first got fired off the job for ordering the wrong sizes, colors, materials, etc. The installers are good but we rarely if ever got the same people returning and they never had proper notes from the previous attempts. In the 50+ calls and in person interactions I have never witnessed a company care so little about customer satisfaction and support. There is no way they actually made money from us after how many times they shipped us the wrong material and had to send people out. Wildly, they didn't seem to care. They did offer us 10% off for all the wasted time and headache but I don't think they ever even went through with that either and honestly, dealing with them is too painful to want to check. In short, do NOT use this company for anything. I wish I did more research first because after discussing with friends I know of two other people that had similar experiences so I don't think this is an isolated instance. read more

In2020 I purchased new shades for my apartment. The cords controlling the shades began showing signs of fraying in about 9 months. The shades were replaced and the new shades began fraying as well. I was told that these were the wrong shades for the location but I had purcahsed the same size and type of shades for the lower apartment and never had any problems with them. Victim blaming rather than dealing with the real problem which was shoddy manufacturing. (I was told the company had changed manufacturers in 2019. ) After much back and forth they replaced the shades which (after a year) do not yet show signs of fraying. However one cord snapped and the store will not do anything to restring it. Their business model insists that I have someone come to the house to take the shade. They will not let me return it to the store to send out for restringing. Over the years I have had numerous of their personnel to my house to assess the problem, to remove the shades, to reinstall the shades. The people sent range from very nice, to so creepy I grabbed a sharp letter opener and visibly held it while he was in my apartment, one person smelled so bad I had to open windows and burn incense after he left. When The shades were removed I had to cover the windows with newspaper . It was so depressing and went on for several weeks, and this happened multiple times as the same problem occurred with the replacement shades. They will not service their poorly made product and I will now have to purchase new shades that actually work from another source. These were expensive shades and this company has decided I am too much trouble for simply insisting that I get shades that actually work and they now refuse to have anything to do with helping me repair their shades. Do not go near this company. I ordered and paid for blinds in mid-July. When the blinds were installed about 8 weeks later, more than half of them were the wrong size. Since then until now (early October), I have had to follow up at least once sometimes twice, every step of the way, in order to try and get this corrected. The windows have all been measured three times - by the original tech who put in the wrong order, by the installer who re-measured everything when it was clear the blinds were wrong, and finally, on September 21, by a third tech who came out again after several phone calls by me to try and find out what was going on. No-one has ever proactively reached out to me to apologize or schedule. The company is still telling me there are only 3 windows that need to be replaced. The customer support people are very nice, although there seems no continuity between anyone in the company. Techs keep telling me they will put it all in their reports but no one else seems to know any of the details. I am at my wits' end and now asking for a refund so I can start over somewhere else. Follow up: I did email as soon as I got Keith's reply below, and of course, no one has replied to my email after days of waiting. Do yourself a huge favor and do not use this company. It's now almost winter and I don't have blinds that fit, and I walked into that store in the middle of July. The amount of time and aggravation this has cost me, not to mention almost 10k, I cannot even believe this company exists. I did get an email from someone else this week, unrelated to Keith, with more incorrect info. I emailed back and asked for a reply, and it has been days with none. More detail: It has now been 4 weeks since I responded to the email. I have also called and emailed three other customer service reps, at least twice each. Not a single person has responded to me. But the cellular shades that were there when we bought our house always bugged me...the cord was very short, the amount of light coming through depended on us lifting the shade. So I went to The Shade Store and spoke with Robin Everhart. He helped me chose a two inch, champagne colored blind for each window. I have worked with Kristin Argue at The Shade Store since beginning in 2019 after finishing construction of a house in Marin County. The project was complicated (from my end) because I wasn't sure in which direction to go (shades or curtains). Kristin was patient all the while as many months went by and the pandemic slowed everything down. All the while, she offered new ideas, new samples as I fed her photos of the space. Looking for expensive shades, that look sharp and are high quality? The Shade Store. Why are shades so expensive? Our first attempt at shades, we went kind of cheap (cheap in the shade world) and bought them at shades.com or something like that and they were about half the price of what the shade store came out to be. They were real janky and not awesome and I didn't like the experience of not having a show room with a ton of options. Time for new windows, we needed new shades and we decided this was gonna be it: we're gonna spend the money and get nice stuff in hopes we'll never have to replace. Working with The Shade Store is easy - they give you all the samples you want and they send someone free of charge to measure. You do have to pay for installation if you'd like that add-on which if it's a bigger project, I'd say why not, as it's about a $100. They come in about 2ish weeks. They look great, they are super functional. Color options for the most part are great (minus double cell blackout). They run a 10% off sale a few times a year, so if you can wait, save that $$. Overall, if you have the $$ and looking for a relatively easy and quality product, we were happy with The Shade Store. I am hesitant to post a poor review because our salesperson, Andrea, was so kind and helpful. But I thought I might give a heads-up to others about the installation problem. The installer must have been inexperienced because he installed the shades in a crooked position. When I pulled the shades up and down they started to "telescope" and scrape the edges of the window frame. The straw fabric frayed along the edges right away. I also wondered whether the fabric was flimsy or whether it was the fault of the crooked installation. It might be a better idea to go with a local company with an experienced installer. The Shade Store, with the help of Andrea, offered to replace the shades at no cost to me. But I wasted a lot of time with 3 months of phone calls, emails, sending photos and videos and 2 hour wait times for appointments. I've worked with Ruben for a number of years, and he has been tremendously helpful with each order. He always provides quick turnarounds for quotes, suggestions for challenging design situations, and makes things right when sometimes there is an issue with an order or install. The Shade Store offers free measures, sets up the installations, and makes product in the US. I also love that they do COM, so if you can't find a fabric you like from the in-house selections, you can use your own. I worked with this location to purchase several woven shades for my living room. The initial in store consult was great. Everything went downhill after that. - Ordering process lacked transparency and was convoluted. - The wrong shades were delivered, extending the delivery and install timeframe. - The initial installer was extremely rude and made me feel very uncomfortable in my own home. He said he had just put in his notice because of the bad experience he had working for the shade store. I asked him to leave without installing the shades. - ZERO accountability in the company response. It was difficult to even find someone to contact to escalate the matter. - ZERO follow through or communication as we worked to resolve the matter. I finally got the shades installed and ultimately received a $600 refund on my installation fee (after I requested it several times; they did not offer). But I will never work with them again. It was just too hard and frustrating. And they do not care an ounce about their customer experience. The complete lack of accountability in resolving the issues is what blew my mind the most. Stuff happens. I get it. But when I couldn't get a clear resolution after contacting the local store manager (I learned those don't really exist), their New York offices (no clue how to escalate), and the CEO (no response) then I realized there wasn't anything to do but to accept that my business is not that important to them. I still have a house full of window treatments I need to install. I'll either DIY or check out Smith and Noble if I need consultation. read more

Didn't like the really old world white plastic blinds that all homeowners seem to flock to. The Shade Store and especially Ruben at this location were a godsend in this regard. Ruben was patient, understanding and had an eye for detail that made our home. It does take time and you have to be patient but the end result is stunning. The installer Jabari (I hope I got his name right), was courteous, professional and clean with his work. Lifetime warranty is an awesome bonus. I was very disappointed with the product and customer service from the Shade Store. They sent someone out to measure the space. The measurements that they took were either incorrect or not actually applied to the order. The product I received was not the correct size. It was also installed poorly. I requested a refund or replacement. I had to make multiple requests before my request was acknowledged. Then the ticket got accidentally resolved/lost, and I didn't hear anything back for months. I followed up, and they told me that the best they could do was offer a discount on a new order. I am disappointed that I've paid hundreds of dollars for a product that was not to my specifications, and that the Shade Store can't figure out a way to make it right that is satisfactory. Now I have an expensive and useless piece of equipment installed on my ceiling. I'll need to remove it and repair the damage that was done to my ceiling and wall. Overall this has been an unpleasant experience, and I certainly won't be placing an order with the Shade Store again in the future. read more

I'm giving a two-star review because the team who do the installation services have been great. The rest of my experience has been frustrating, especially considering it's a product I could have gone somewhere else for, like Hunter Douglas. A little over two months ago I moved into a new home and needed shades. I decided to stop in the Shade Store to see what they had and it seemed promising. I was quickly greeted by Tiffany who was friendly, helpful and not pushy. I took a few swatches home, quickly made my decision and reached back out to Tiffany. Working with her was like talking into an empty void, emails and follow-up emails went unanswered for days. I started to feel like a nag trying to place my order. I started to think about why I hadn't shopped around with other vendors but thought I was already too far into the process to start again, my windows had already been measured and I just needed her to update something on the invoice and submit it. There is still a pending issue with one of my shades that their awesome install team has been helping me with but Tiffany is totally MIA. As far as the shades go, they are nice but not something I couldn't have gotten somewhere else and worked with a person who actually cared about me as a customer. The other disappointment is the branding that is all over them. I didn't pay a lot of money to advertise for a product I don't, in the end, recommend. read more

I am still waiting for floor to ceiling drapery order to be completed. I started this process on February 1. On Feb 8 had a professional measurement. Paid the nearly $6,000 upfront, as required. Patiently awaited the delivery. Draperies were shipped first and arrived on March 30, the hardware wasn't shipped until March 27 and of course did not arrive in the for the first scheduled installation date was to be April 2. Had to change it twice because of slow FedEx ground shipment. FedEx delivered draperies on April 12 by appt and for signature. I insisted on expedited installation, because I had been waiting for these draperies since Feb 8. At 7:30 am, on April 13, I was awakened by the phone. A recorded message informed me that my installer would be here in 15 minutes. I jumped out of bed, threw on clothes and began moving furniture. The draperies for the dining room were installed. The hardware for the living room was not manufactured properly and could not be used. The leads for the second half of the long rod were missing and the cord was too short. I have received verbal assurances from The Shade Store customer care staff, I was told the rod would be remanufactured in 7-10 days. That was on April 14, but today is April 29, and I have no information about the status of this job. I am very unhappy about this. In two days, it will be four months since I walked into the store ready to purchase new drapery. There is nothing I can do but wait since they have my money. John reached out to me from customer service, and against my gut I took him up on his offer to make it right and I am sooo happy I did! This install went smoothly and the shade looks great! I was worried it would be obtrusive and somehow take away from the beauty of the custom window and view of the backyard, but it does not. In fact, my husband did not even notice it was there at first! The solar shade is attractive and keeps out the late afternoon sun while decreasing the temperature in the kitchen immensely. I would for sure consider The Shade Store again because the product is terrific and their customer service is top notch. read more
